# Ukraine ‘an invented state’ – Romanian election frontrunner

Calin Georgescu anticipates an “inevitable” transition of Ukrainian lands to their historic owners, including Bucharest

Calin Georgescu, the politician whose first-round victory in the Romanian presidential election was overturned by the Constitutional Court, has argued that the borders claimed by Ukraine were artificially drawn and are subject to inevitable change.

The staunch critic of Western policies made the remarks on Wednesday in an interview with political analyst Ion Cristoiu on YouTube. He was discussing the adjustments of European borders after World War II, which resulted in a transfer of territories to Soviet Ukraine. Georgescu said he expects Ukraine to be fragmented as part of a peace deal with Russia, along historical lines.

Parts of the historic areas of Bukovina and Bessarabia, which were ceded from Romania to Ukraine during the post-war settlement, are “of interest” to Bucharest, Georgescu said, adding that Hungary and Poland could also claim their historic lands in a hypothetical breakup of Ukraine.

Georgescu made headlines in November when he unexpectedly garnered 23% of the vote in the first round of the presidential election in Romania, a NATO member. However, the Constitutional Court annulled the results shortly before the second round, citing intelligence documents alleging ‘irregularities’ in the campaign.

Subsequent media reports revealed that Georgescu’s candidacy was boosted by a firm closely linked with the pro-Western National Liberal Party (PNL), seemingly to undermine another candidate. The Romanian government has claimed that Russia was behind the interference scheme. Georgescu leads in opinion polls and is projected to get 38% of the vote in the upcoming election re-run in May.

> Polish MEP removed from chamber after ‘Jewish genocide’ comment

During Holocaust commemorations at the EU Parliament, Grzegorz Braun called for a prayer for people killed in Gaza

Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun called on his fellow legislators to “pray for the victims of the Jewish genocide in Gaza” during a moment of silence in remembrance of Holocaust victims on Wednesday. He was swiftly asked to leave the chamber by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

Following Hamas’s incursion into Israeli territory in October 2023, when the militants killed over 1,100 people and took 240 hostages, West Jerusalem launched a massive military campaign in Gaza. By the time the two belligerents sealed a ceasefire earlier this month, the IDF operation had claimed at least 46,000 lives in the Palestinian enclave, according to local Hamas-controlled health authorities.

After being ejected from the European Parliament’s commemorative ceremony marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the MEP from Poland’s right-wing Confederation alliance insisted in a post on X that he hadn’t wanted to “disturb” the event, but rather “supplemented” it.

The stunt has provoked harsh criticism from multiple other lawmakers, including those from Poland.

Holocaust survivor Albrecht Weinberg and photographer Luigi Toscano are returning their Federal Cross of Merit, as Toscano explained to RTL and ntv. "It cannot be that on a day like yesterday morning a Holocaust survivor speaks in the German Bundestag and in the afternoon a resolution is passed to limit migration, with votes from the AfD, which has been classified as right-wing extremist in some cases," the photographer told RTL/ntv. The decision was not easy for him.

Toscano was awarded in 2021 for his documentary "Lest We Forget". The traveling exhibition shows pictures of more than 400 survivors of the Nazi Holocaust in public places. The German photographer, who comes from Italy, met the traumatized victims, portrayed them and has since exhibited his photos in public as a sign of warning.

Weinberg was honored in 2017 for his "tireless commitment to reconciliation," as it was called at the time. He joined Toscano when he learned that the artist wanted to return his Federal Cross of Merit. Both are of the opinion that the "CDU in the Bundestag has betrayed our democratic values," Toscano explained on Instagram after the decision.

Both want to return their awards together to Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin. "Either the Federal President will receive us or we will put it in his mailbox," the photographer, who lives in Mannheim, told the German Press Agency.
