US army refuses to name female pilot killed in helicopter crash with passenger jet
The female pilot killed in the helicopter collision with a passenger jet in Washington DC will not be named, the US Army said.
The army made the a highly unusual decision at the request of the family not to release the name of one of the three soldiers killed when a military Black Hawk collided with a passenger jet on Wednesday evening.
The army identified two of the soldiers killed as Staff Sgt Ryan Austin O’Hara and Chief WO2 Andrew Loyd Eaves, but did not provide details about the third.
“At the request of the family, the name of the third soldier will not be released at this time,” an army statement said.
President Donald Trump has suggested, without evidence, that the deadly mid-air collision was the result of the Federal Aviation Administration’s efforts to hire a more diverse workforce.
Pete Hegseth, US defense secretary, while at the White House speaking about the crash on Thursday, also took aim at diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the military and government.
On Friday Mr Trump said the helicopter was to blame for the fatal crash.
Washington’s Ronald Reagan airport banned helicopters from flying parts of two routes within its radius after the crash and the US president said the military aircraft was “flying too high” at the time of the collision.
CNN later reported that flight-tracking data showed the helicopter was flying 100ft above the maximum allowed altitude.
The Black Hawk helicopter was conducting a training flight for a female pilot who has not yet been identified.
She was being overseen by Chief WO2 Eaves, who had more than 1,000 hours of flying experience and would have been expected to take over the controls in the event of an emergency.
All three soldiers on the army aircraft were killed in the crash above Ronald Reagan National Airport, as well as the 64 passengers and crew on American Airlines flight 5342.
The crew chief of the Black Hawk helicopter that collided with a passenger jet on Thursday has been identified as Ryan O’Hara, a father-of-one.
O’Hara, 28, would have sat in the back of the helicopter on its training mission through the congested airspace above Washington DC.
Jonathan Koziol, the chief of staff of the army’s aviation directorate, said that Chief WO2 Eaves, the instructor pilot on the flight, had logged more than 1,000 hours of flight time.
The third soldier on the aircraft, a female pilot commanding the flight, has yet to be named. She had more than 500 hours of flying experience, Mr Koziol said.
Mr Hegseth told a press conference on Thursday that the UH-60 Black Hawk crew were “fairly experienced” and had been wearing night-vision goggles at the time of the crash, which should have allowed them to spot the approaching airliner.
He added that the army was investigating whether there was an “elevation issue” with the Black Hawk route.
Bradley Bowman, a former Black Hawk pilot who had flown the same path as the doomed craft, told CBS News that it was crucial for pilots to keep the helicopter below 200ft.
“You literally have aircraft coming in and out, and you have to stay at that altitude… to make sure there isn’t a collision. For some reason that failed last night.”
Donald Trump has blamed diversity hiring for the crash, without providing evidence, and accused the Black Hawk of taking an “unbelievably bad” route ahead of the crash.
Mr Koziol dismissed questions on the ability of female pilots in remarks to reporters on Thursday.
“As for women in the military, flying a helicopter is like driving a car,” he said. “You just got to learn how to do it and anyone can do it with the proper training.
“Both pilots had flown this specific route before at night – this wasn’t something new to either one of them. These are our top pilots doing this national capital region,” he added.

Trump says he opened California’s water. Local officials say he nearly flooded them.
SACRAMENTO, California — President Donald Trump declared victory on Friday in his long-running water war with California, boasting he sent billions of gallons south — but local officials say they narrowly prevented him from possibly flooding farms.
"Today, 1.6 billion gallons and, in 3 days, it will be 5.2 billion gallons. Everybody should be happy about this long fought Victory! I only wish they listened to me six years ago — There would have been no fire!" he said in a post on his social media site.
Local officials had to talk the Army Corps of Engineers down after it abruptly alerted them Thursday afternoon it was about to increase flows from two reservoirs to maximum capacity — a move the agency said was in response to Trump directing the federal government to "maximize" water supplies.
Before the Corps ratcheted down its plan, local authorities scrambled to move equipment and warn farms about possible flooding, said Victor Hernandez, who oversees water management on one of the rivers, the Kaweah in Tulare County. He said the Corps gave him one hour notice on Thursday.
"I've been here 25 years, and I've never been given notice that quick," Hernandez said. "That was alarming and scary."
The incident is the latest chapter in an ongoing feud between Trump and state authorities that has been turbo-charged by the Los Angeles fires, which the president has used to reignite long-running complaints about water management that had nothing to do with the response to the disaster.
An Army Corps spokesperson tied the releases to Trump’s executive order on Sunday directing all federal agencies to maximize water deliveries in order to respond to the fires that started in Los Angeles earlier this month.
"Consistent with the direction in the Executive Order on Emergency Measures to Provide Water Resources in California, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is releasing water from Terminus Dam at Lake Kaweah and Schafer Dam at Success Lake to ensure California has water available to respond to the wildfires," Gene Pawlik said in a statement.
While releasing water from reservoirs before a big storm, like the one expected to hit Northern California this weekend, is standard flood-control procedure to avoid overflowing dams, Hernandez said the Army Corps’ Thursday plan would have released far more water than needed. He said releasing the water at the capacity the Corps had planned to would have flooded both the Kaweah and Tule rivers, where the Corps' reservoirs are located.
"Channel capacity is very dangerous,” Hernandez said. "People don't understand that [with] channel capacity, you're going to have flood damage down below."
Trump since his first term and during his presidential campaigns has repeatedly vowed to send more water to Central Valley farmers in the state's conservative heartland. He incorrectly blamed the temporary lack of water in Los Angeles hydrants during wildfires earlier this month on the state’s water management policies, though the state’s reservoirs are at or near historic levels right now and the hydrants went dry because of the high local demand. He's also threatened to withhold disaster aid unless California goes along with his moves to deliver more water.
Officials from his Department of Government Efficiency visited a federal water-pumping station in Northern California on Monday, after which Trump posted on Truth Social that "The United States Military just entered the Great State of California and, under Emergency Powers, TURNED ON THE WATER." California officials clarified Monday that the federal pumps had been down due to electrical maintenance.
But a former senior Bureau of Reclamation official said moves like the one in Tulare County could endanger property and lives. Reclamation is the primary federal agency with authority over delivering water in the West, while the Army Corps is largely responsible for flood control.
"Something really bad could happen because of their nonsensical approach," the former official, who was granted anonymity because of the issue's political sensitivity, said. "Floods are real. This isn’t playing around with a software company."
Rick Brown, the public affairs officer for the Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento, said Friday the two reservoirs had hit water levels high enough on Thursday to trigger standard flood control releases.

Pentagon removes major media outlets, including NBC News, from dedicated workstations as part of a new 'rotation program'
WASHINGTON — The Department of Defense announced Friday night that it will institute a new “annual media rotation program” for its in-house press corps, effectively removing several major news outlets, including NBC News, from their Pentagon office spaces in favor of other outlets.
In addition to NBC News, The New York Times, National Public Radio and Politico must vacate their dedicated workspaces. The news organizations learned about the new directive in a memo sent to the press corps without being individually notified, and an accompanying email included a message that read, in part, “no additional information will be provided at this time.”
“For over a half-century, the Pentagon Press Corps has benefited from working out of individual office spaces that provide coveted and open access to some of the Department’s top military and civilian leaders,” read the memo Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot sent to the Pentagon Press Association.
“In order to broaden access to the limited space of the Correspondents’ Corridor to outlets that have not previously enjoyed the privilege and journalist value of working from physical office space in the Pentagon, beginning February 14, 2025,” Ullyot wrote, there will be “a new Annual Media Rotation Program for those dedicated media spaces.”
In a statement, NBC News said, “We’re disappointed by the decision to deny us access to a broadcasting booth at the Pentagon that we’ve used for many decades. Despite the significant obstacles this presents to our ability to gather and report news in the national public interest, we will continue to report with the same integrity and rigor NBC News always has.”
The move by Pentagon officials comes seven days after the Senate confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth by the narrowest of margins. It followed weeks of coverage about his behavior and treatment of women, including allegations that his alcohol consumption alarmed colleagues and his second wife feared for her safety around him. Hegseth has denied the allegations.
NBC News reported on some of the allegations against Hegseth.
The memo identified the rotating organizations by medium — selecting one each from TV, print, radio and online news to swap in and out. It said the news organizations rotating out had two weeks to vacate their spaces.
The new outlets rotating in are One America News Network — which will take NBC News’s spot — the New York Post, Breitbart News Network and HuffPost.
Three of the new outlets are conservative, while HuffPost leans progressive.
HuffPost does not have a Pentagon correspondent, and the site did not request a space, spokesperson Lizzie Grams said.
“If the Trump administration and Secretary Hegseth are interested in more hard-hitting coverage of their stewardship of the Defense Department from HuffPost, we are ready to deliver,” Grams said.
A One America News spokesperson said in a statement that the news outlet has operated a bureau in Washington since 2013, and it “looks forward to having access to physical office space at the Pentagon and will utilize the accommodations full-time as soon as it’s available.”
NBC News reached out to the other news outlets for comment.
The memo did not include further details about the process of the new “rotation program,” including how officials chose which outlets needed to vacate office space first, how the new outlets were chosen and which are next, and how long an outlet would remain without an office space before it was rotated back into the building.
NBC News has held its dedicated Pentagon workspace for decades, enabling the network to broadcast its journalism throughout the day and within minutes of breaking news. The “booth,” as they are called, is hardwired with technical equipment, phone lines and a camera installed by NBC.
It is unclear whether NBC News will have the technical capability to broadcast from the Pentagon once it clears out its equipment from its workspace.

Commitments involve four primary priority areas: “people,” “prosperity,” “planet,” and “principles of governance.” Commitments can be concrete goals, such as Allianz initiating five programs to support underprivileged children, or more abstract reform efforts, like Estee Lauder committing to “[address] racial inequality through learning” in 2020.5
Involvement of the Vatican
Pope Francis and the Church hierarchy that forms the Vatican government have an advisory role at the Council for Inclusive Capitalism with the Vatican. Pope Francis has been described as the group’s “main advisor” and “moral leader.” Lynn Forester de Rothschild reached out to Pope Francis in 2016 after hearing him speak at the Vatican Global Forum where he expressed skepticism about modern capitalism which aligned with many of the views of inclusive capitalists. The leaders ofCICV, known as the “Guardians,”meet annually with Pope Francis.6
De Rothschild has said that she hopes Pope Francis will serve as a “moral base” for the inclusive capitalism movement.7
