even where I live with a short as shit growing season, I grow my more of my own veggies than I purchase. it's work and I have time to do it so why not?
extra veggies are shared family
but we share most of what we raise and grow so we have more variety. for example we exchange some squash for eggplant or chicken for pork or beef
I had a bad year when wildfires caused us to evacuate for 2 weeks and our pumphouse generator failed (not being able to fuel it)
but this is only our 5th year so we still have some bad years due to us.
