But patents can be used defensively as well.
I don't think patents themselves are the problem, just corrupt people who abuse them and the legal system to their benefit.
That said it's a very turbulent time in a very turbulent space.

From what I can read this man is using patents to protect Bitcoin Cash from having its technologies stolen by competitors. He is going to use patents to make his coin the clear competitive winner in the space in order to make the competition capitulate and either join his blockchain or go away for good.
I think that's what he's doing yeah,
but it seems like he's on our side.
At least that's what I can get from what I've read on him.
His idea is to bring hard currency to the world - for everyone. Real money, free to transact with whoever you want (within the bounds of the law).
Hope my analysis is right - we shall see.
