Kiev given green light to spend UK loan tied to ‘stolen’ Russian assets

London earlier pledged to contribute $2.8 billion for Ukraine aid as part of G7 loans to be repaid by profits from Moscow’s frozen funds (Did any of them consult with PDJT? This will backfire)

Kiev has received final approval to tap a £2.26 billion ($2.8 billion) UK loan linked to profits generated by frozen Russian assets. Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers approved a draft law on Friday that allows Kiev to allocate the funds, the Defense Ministry announced in a statement.

The money is part of the G7’s ‘Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration’ $50 billion loan approved for Ukraine last year, to be repaid using profits generated by the immobilized Russian funds. The legislation to disburse the loan was grantedroyal assent on January 16, following the signing of the UK-Ukraine 100 Year Partnership Agreement. According to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, the funds will mostly be spent on air defense, as well as repair and production of weaponry and military equipment.

Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, Western states froze an estimated $300 billion worth of funds belonging to the Russian central bank. Of the $300 billion in immobilized Russian assets, around $213 billion is currently held in the Brussels-based clearinghouse Euroclear. The funds have already generated billions in interest, with the clearinghouse transferring €1.55 billion ($1.63 billion) directly to Ukraine in July last year.

The decision to tap frozen Russian assets has sparked debate among G7 members, with countries such as Germany, France, and Italy raising legal concerns. The IMF has also warnedthat seizing these assets without a clear legal framework could undermine global confidence in the Western financial system==.

Moscow has condemned the use of its frozen assets, calling it “theft.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned in December that Russia would pursue legal action against any attempts to channel the funds to Ukraine.

“Speaking in plain Russian, this money was stolen from us. Our assets have been frozen absolutely illegally, against all norms and rules,”Peskov said, responding to the US transfer of a $1 billion installment from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. He added that Russia would exhaust all legal avenues to protect its property and rights. Finance Minister Anton Siluanov earlier warned that there are plans to mirror the West’s actions, tapping income from frozen Western assets in Russia.

Separately on Friday, Finland’s Defense Ministry announced its 27th military aid package for Ukraine, valued at €198 million. It is unclear where the funds will originate, as the ministry refused to disclose information on the specific content, delivery method, or schedule of the aid, citing operational reasons.

(These countries obviously make money on the war, so they want it to continue)

European leaders will ‘wag tails’ for Trump – Putin

Opponents of the new US leader’s political trajectory within the bloc will soon be brought to heel, the Russian president believes

The EU has always taken its political cues from Washington and will continue doing so with Donald Trump in office, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said. Despite some EU leaders actively opposing Trump’s election, the newly inaugurated president “will restore order”and bring the bloc to heel “quite quickly,” Putin believes.

The Russian president made the remarks on Sunday in an interview to Russia-1 TV journalist Pavel Zarubin.

It has been decades since Europe last had strong politicianscapable of forming opinions independently from Washington, Putin said, referring to the era of former French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder.

However, in recent years, theEU’s policies have been steered by “political small fries” who lack education and ability, Putin asserted. He noted that these individuals have “happily carried out any order from the president in Washington under Biden,”but “got confused when Trump suddenly won” the November election.

“They just don’t like Trump, they actively fought him, interfered in political life, in the US election…Trump has different ideas about what is good and what is bad, including in gender policy, in some other issues, and they don’t like it,” Putin said. He believes, however, it won’t be long until the EU once again follows orders from Washington.

“I assure you, Trump, with his character and persistence, will restore order quite quickly. And all of them, you’ll see, soon all of them will stand at the master’s feet and gently wag their tails,”Putin argued.

Many European leaders expressed concerns about Trump’s potential return to the White House throughout the presidential race last year, alarmed by his “America First” protectionist rhetoric, threats to impose tariffs on EU goods, criticism of the bloc’s low contribution to NATO defense spending, and calls to change course on the Ukraine conflict, among other things. After congratulating Trump on his election victory in November, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz were nevertheless quick to call on the bloc to act in a united manner in the face of Trump’s return to office.

So far, Trump’s executive actions have not directly targeted the EU. However, this past week he reaffirmed his intention to place “substantial” tariffs on goods from the bloc.

Brussels has pledged to respond to these actions “in a proportionate way,” while French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou last week called on the bloc to stand up to Trump and his policies or face being “crushed.”

“The US has decided to embark upon an extremely domineering form of politics… and if we don’t do anything, our fate is very simple –we will be dominated. We will be crushed. We will be marginalized,” Bayrou stated.

It's interesting the EU has to band together to fight Trump, they are all too afraid to negotiate on their own with Trump.

Elon Musk’s team has gotten access to the Treasury Department’s payments system.NYTs

Feb. 1, 2025 Updated 4:00 p.m.1/2

(Very odd picture of Bessent to use by NYYS)

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave representatives of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency full access to the federal payment system late on Friday, according to three people familiar with the change, handing Elon Musk and the team he is leading a powerful tool to monitor and potentially limit government spending.

The new authority follows a standoff this week with a top Treasury official who had resisted allowing Mr. Musk’s lieutenants into the department’s payment system, which sends out money on behalf of the entire federal government. The official, a career civil servant named David Lebryk, was put on leave and then suddenly retired on Friday after the dispute, according to people familiar with his exit.

The system could give the Trump administration another mechanism to attempt to unilaterally restrict disbursement of money approved for specific purposes by Congress, a push that has faced legal roadblocks.

Mr. Musk, who has been given wide latitude by President Trump to find ways to slash government spending, has recently fixated on Treasury’s payment processes, criticizing the department in a social media post on Saturday for not rejecting more payments as fraudulent or improper. __It is not clear whether the team led by Mr. Musk, the world’s wealthiest man, has blocked any payments since gaining access to the system._

The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is not a government department, but a team within the administration.

It was put together at Mr. Trump’s direction by Mr. Musk to fan out across federal agencies seeking ways to cut spending, reduce the size of the federal work force and bring more efficiency to the bureaucracy. Most of those working on the initiative were recruited by Mr. Musk and his aides.

Similar DOGE teams have begun demanding access to data and systems at other federal agencies, but none of those agencies control the flow of money in the way the Treasury Department does.

Mr. Bessent granted access to the payments system to a handful of staff members affiliated with DOGE, including Tom Krause, the chief executive of a Silicon Valley company, Cloud Software Group, according to one of the people familiar with the change.

Access to the system has historically been closely held because it includes sensitive personal information about the millions of Americans who receive Social Security checks, tax refunds and other payments from the federal government.

A Treasury Department spokesman, a spokeswoman for DOGE and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In a process typically run by civil servants, the Treasury Department carries out payments submitted by agencies across the government, disbursing more than $5 trillion in fiscal year 2023.

Former officials said the onus was on individual agencies to ensure their payments are proper, not the relatively small staff at the Treasury Department, which is responsible for making more than one billion payments per year. (So they are admitting nobody at the Treasury ever checked to see if there was fraud, why would they "Just Trust" those submitting payments)

Mr. Lebryk, the career Treasury official who retired on Friday, had resisted requests from members of Mr. Trump’s transition team for access to the data last month.

After Mr. Trump took office, the White House indicated that he should be removed from the job and, according to a person familiar with the matter, Mr. Bessent suggested putting him on leave.Democrats raised alarmthis week that the Trump administration and Mr. Bessent, who was just confirmed by the Senate this week, were compromising the federal government’s payments system.(they are freaked out because much of the money are going to their business's or business of their friends that pay kickbacks, is my guess)

“To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, andany politically motivated meddlingin them risks severe damage to our country and the economy,” Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, wrote in a letter to Mr. Bessent on Friday. (Democrats don't want an audit of the system, I wonder why? Kek)

“I can think of no good reason why political operators who have demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law would need access to these sensitive, mission-critical systems.”

Mr. Wyden followed up on Saturday to express concern that access to the payment system had already been granted and pointed to Mr. Musk’s potential conflicts of interest. “Social Security and Medicare benefits, grants, payments to government contractors, including those that compete directly with Musk’s own companies. All of it,” he wrote on social media. (These idiots fail to realize the system has already probably been hacked, and if DOGE wanted to hack it, they could.)

During the transition, Mr. Musk vocally opposed Mr. Bessent being picked as Mr. Trump’s Treasury secretary. Mr. Musk, then just an empowered adviser to Mr. Trump, went public with his opinion that he preferred Howard Lutnick, a Wall Street executive, for the role because Mr. Bessent was “a business-as-usual choice.” Mr. Lutnick became Mr. Trump’s choice for Commerce secretary.(he had an opinion, everyone has one, even NYTs)

Piers Morgan is an idiot and llved Ukraine, he makes no sense at all, he has no sane argument against Russia, except he thinks Putin is a dictator and Ukraine is a sovereign country, which they have never been.

Tucker & Piers Morgan Debate Foreign Aid, Hate Speech, NATO, Gun Control, & Is Zelensky a Dictator?

A dictator is someone who ignores elections and rules by violence. Zelensky meets that definition but Piers Morgan loves him anyway.

I honestly can't listen to Piers, his questions are not thoroughly research, they are gotcha nonsense, his acceptance that Zelensky is a Magnificent Leader, and even though he's not an elected President because he refused to do 2nd election, all of that is fine with Piers. Piers said he was a liberal, which I never saw that before, but he's proven that identity politics is what he believes. Most of "the supposed facts" about Russia and Putin are false facts that he states
