Visy billionaire Anthony Pratt tops 2023-24 donations list with $1m pledge to Labor

The Australian billionaire topped the political donations list with a $1m gift to one party, but he wasn’t the only rich-lister helping out.

Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt has topped the 2023-24 political donations list with a $1m pledge to the Australian Labor Party.

Newly released transparency data by the Australian Electoral Commission revealed Pratt Holdings made the sizeable donation on January 11.

In February last year, Anthony Albanese was under media scrutiny after he attended a private function organised by the Visy chairman at his Melbourne mansion that featured a performance by pop star Katy Perry.

In recent weeks, Mr Pratt, who has recently relocated his family to the US, has also thrown his support behind US President Donald Trump.

Apartment developers Meriton Properties, owned by billionaire developer Harry Triguboff, was the biggest donator to Australia’s Liberal Party with two payments totalling $590,000, while Australia’s richest woman Gina Rinehart donated $500,000 to the Liberals’ Queensland, Northern Territory and South Australian parties.

Climate 200 donated $432,941 to individual teal candidates, with donations to Zoe Daniels ($144,965) and Monique Ryan ($132,465) topping the list.

The Kylea Tink Independent Ltd also received $40,281 from the group.

Labor’s federal division received just more than $15m in donations, plus more than $52m from their state divisions.

The Liberal Party’s federal branch received $11m, with state branches netting $63.2m.

Across both federal and state divisions, the Nationals received $8.6m, while the Greens received $17m, with the federal division pulling in $4.8m.

Lindsey Graham to the rescue for State and USAID

There’s one senior Republican who’s willing and able to fight for maintaining the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development budgets: Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

"If you don’t want to use military force any more than you have to, count me in," Graham said in an exclusive interview Tuesday with The Cable. "State Department, USAID, all of these programs, in their own way, help win this struggle against radical Islam. The unsung heroes of this war are the State Department officials, the [Department of Justice] officials, and the agricultural people who are going out there."

"To those members who do not see the value of the civilian partnership in the war on terror, I think they are making a very dangerous decision," Graham said.

Graham plans to use his position, working with subcommittee chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), to increase State Department and USAID funding for Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq and increase the civilian side of various military-civilian partnerships. "The way I look at it is, it’s national security insurance that we’re buying," he said.

Automatic voter registration let non-citizens in South Dakota, Oregon onto voter rolls, report says

24 states and Washington, D.C., have automatic voter registration.

Anew election integrity report examining how non-citizens have been registered to vote in South Dakota and Oregon warns that automatic voter registration is the culprit.

A report released by the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) last week shows that both South Dakota and Oregon, which have automatic voter registration, found non-citizens on their respective voter rolls last year. The report explains that this occurs easily and warns states about using automatic voter registration.

In October, South Dakota found that 273 non-citizens were incorrectly on state voter rolls due to automatic voter registration through the state’s department for issuing driver’s licenses.

After South Dakota used the U.S. Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) to check the citizenship status of the 273 registered voters, the non-citizens were informed that the state had corrected the errors and that they would be removed from the voter rolls, according to the PILF report. The non-citizens were also notified about how to re-register to vote after becoming U.S. citizens.

South Dakota implemented automatic voter registration after a lawsuit filed in 2020 on behalf of Native American tribes regarding the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) was settled two years later, per the report.

Oregon was the first state to implement automatic voter registration in 2016, but still has issues with non-citizens registering to vote.

The state first realized that 306 non-citizens had been registered since 2021 in September. Later that month, the number increased to 1,259. At the time, the Oregon secretary of state’s office found that there were nine ineligible voters who had cast ballots.

The office explained that some voters were registered when the Driver and Motor Vehicles division (DMV) incorrectly selected U.S. birth certificates and passports as documents that the customers had provided, rather than foreign birth certificates and passports. The DMV explained that a 2021 law letting non-citizens receive driver’s licenses was also a factor in non-citizens being registered to vote. The department then implemented new procedures to help ensure the errors didn't continue.

In October, the Oregon secretary of state’s office found and instructed the removal of another 302 non-citizens who were registered to vote.

Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade (D) instructed the Elections Division to create and fill a new position that oversees the process of automatically registering voters through the DMV. She joined Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek (D) in calling for a third-party audit of the state's motor voter program. Kotek also ordered the DMV to pause automatic voter registration last month until a review had been conducted by a data expert panel by the end of the year.
