Definitely this. It puts their defenders online in a precarious position as well, because it will be blatantly obvious they are defending them for partisan reasons alone which almost no normal Americans find acceptable. It can avoid the mental triggering that happens when you see someone in your tribe being attacked too, if its direct and personal rather than targeting entire groups.
