Captagon, Drug Used by Hamas on Oct. 7, Found in Israeli Nightclubs, Causing Severe Side Effects

Israelis who thought they were using the party drug Memsi were actually taking Captagon, a powerful stimulant linked to Assad, Hezbollah, and Iranian-backed militias

Hospitals in Israel have recently reported severe side effects in people who used "Memsi," "Doctor," or MMC3 โ€“ various names for a popular party drug. New findings suggest the drug contains Captagon, a powerful stimulant reportedly used by Hamas terrorists during the October 7 massacre.

Memsi, a stimulant that has gained popularity in Israel in recent years, is typically sold as a party drug in nightclubs. It is supposed to contain cathinone, a synthetic derivative of a compound found in khat leaves.

However, in recent weeks, users who believed they had taken Memsi reported unexpected and severe side effects, including prolonged insomnia, heart palpitations, and acute anxiety attacks.

Dr. Roy Zucker, an internal medicine specialist at Tel Aviv's Ichilov Medical Center, said toxicology tests found that substances marketed as Memsi contained no cathinone. Instead, they were a mix of amphetamine and theophylline โ€“ the core ingredients of Captagon, a drug primarily produced in Syria.

Captagon, often called the "poor man's cocaine" and the "ISIS drug," has been used by extremist groups to boost energy, alertness, and aggression. It is highly addictive and significantly different from traditional Memsi, Zucker said.

"I initially received a trickle of reports from people noticing unusual effects. After ten cases, I decided to investigate. By now, I estimate I've received hundreds โ€“ I stopped counting," Zucker said.

He noted that Memsi is widely used by both adults and teenagers but warned that the drug currently being sold is "a completely different substance โ€“ more addictive and more dangerous โ€“ even though Memsi itself is already a terrible drug. This is borderline crystal meth."

Israel's Health Ministry is trying to trace the drug's source, Zucker said.

Captagon production and trafficking have been linked to networks associated with Syrian President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah. Reports indicate that profits from the trade also fund Iranian-backed militias, which have recently attacked U.S. forces in the Middle East.

FBI turns over details of 5,000 employees who worked on January 6 cases to Trump Justice Department, as agents sue

FBI officials have complied with demands to provide the Justice Department with details of thousands of employees who worked on investigations related to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot, according to people familiar with the situation.

The demand has caused consternation among FBI employees who fear it is meant to amass a list of personnel for possible termination by the Trump administration.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, in a Friday memo with the subject line โ€œTerminations,โ€ had given FBI officials a noon deadline Tuesday to submit the details of thousands of agents and analysts. Bove previously ordered the firing of eight senior FBI officials, including those who oversaw cyber, national security and criminal investigations.

More than 5,000 employee details were submitted, including employee ID numbers, job titles and their role in the January 6 investigations, sources said, but not their names. There are more than 13,000 agents and 38,000 total FBI employees.
