Israel condemns EU envoy's Gaza paragliding flight

Israel has condemned the EU's outgoing envoy to the Palestinians after he paraglided over Gaza's coast to draw attention to the blockade of the strip.

A video showed Sven Kรผhn von Burgsdorff declaring he had carried out "the first Gaza paragliding flight in history".

"Once you have a free Palestine, a free Gaza, you can do exactly the same thing," the German diplomat adds.

Departing EU envoy: I wonโ€™t accuse Israel of apartheid, but itโ€™s worthy of discussion

The European Unionโ€™s Ambassador to the Palestinians Sven Kรผhn von Burgsdorff soared off into retirement in style, conducting what he said was the first-ever paraglide over the Gaza Strip last month.

โ€œOnce you have a free Palestine, a free Gaza, you can do exactly the same thing, and thatโ€™s the reason why I did this โ€” to show you the way forward if you work for it,โ€ said Kรผhn von Burgsdorff, who formally concluded three decades as a European diplomat on Tuesday.

His stunt struck a nerve in Israel, though, whose Foreign Ministry branded it a โ€œprovocative action.โ€

โ€œThe European diplomat forgot a long time ago that he represents the EU and its member states,โ€ said a Foreign Ministry spokesperson. โ€œHe continues to represent the Palestinian narrative and to serve as a propaganda tool for terror organizations controlling Gaza.โ€

โ€œDuring this period, the airmanship and courage of Sergeant Witt in the successful accomplishment of these important reconnaissance missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, under extremely hazardous conditions, demonstrated her outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty,โ€ the citation states. โ€œThe professional ability and outstanding aerial accomplishments of Sergeant Witt reflect great credit upon herself and the United States Air Force.โ€

President George W. Bush awarded the Air Medal to Witt, and the citation, dated Dec. 2, 2004, was signed by Lt. Gen. Walter Buchanan III, then-commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command.
