I am engineering also- and I actually do think that given the material and finding that it gates electrons, then microscopic dissection to find out what the material and layout are would reveal the "idea" of how it works easily enough.
And 6mos is plenty of time with the full support of that kind of project.
Remember, they only "invented" one transistor and proof of concept was valid within 6mos. It was about a year later before anything was produced that was useful.
If no one thought about jet propulsion and it "didn't exist", all it would take to envision and create it would be seeing it in action (alien so to speak), then an engineer would inherently know what happened and a smart conversation could mimic it. Having the actual jet engine would prove even more useful.
The building block of ANY I.C.chip is transistors.
More processing power = more junctions and complexity, but if you take it down to core blocks, it is just simple transistors made from refined dirt.
For years I remember arguments about that in the industry. Popular electronics contradicted theories so many times until the mid 70's.
