Senate Confirms Attorney General Pam Bondi 54-46

The Senate on Tuesday night confirmed Pam Bondi as President Donald Trump's attorney general.
The vote was 54-46, with only one Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, supporting Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who became Trump's pick when former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., turned down the nomination and resigned from Congress.
Fetterman told reporters after the vote that he decided to support Bondi because of her qualifications, even though she is not his "ideal" choice, according to CNN.
"I'm saying that she's, she's qualified, and it's not my ideal pick, but it turns out that [former Attorney General] Merrick Garland wasn't anyone's ideal one either," he said.
Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., who succeeded Bondi in 2019 as Florida's attorney general before being named to the Senate by Gov. Ron DeSantis to replace Secretary of State Marco Rubio, posted on X, "So excited to vote to confirm my friend @PamBondi for US Attorney General. Congratulations AG Pam Bondi, 'you will be the Greatest AG.' "
Trump will task Bondi to reshape the Department of Justice, which was highly politicized under her predecessor, Garland. Former President Joe Biden's DOJ launched political prosecutions of Trump, jailed nearly 2,000 people connected to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol, targeted Catholics as potential domestic terrorists, and jailed peaceful anti-abortion protesters.
"I want to congratulate Pam on her confirmation as the next U.S. Attorney General following today's Senate vote," Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., a former Missouri attorney general, said in a news release.
"I’ve known Pam both as a colleague and friend, and I have full confidence that she will do an outstanding job leading the Justice Department as our next Attorney General," Schmitt said. "Pam will focus on reversing the disastrous weaponization that's occurred at the Justice Department, fight to protect our rights, and ensure that justice is administered fairly."
The Senate on Monday voted 52-46 along party lines to end debate and send Bondi's nomination to the floor for a full vote. Fetterman and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., did not vote Monday. Like Fetterman, Graham voted Tuesday to confirm Bondi.
US Postal Service Blocking Packages from China, Hong Kong

The U.S. Postal Service will temporarily suspend accepting inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong until further notice, according to the agency's website.
The change, effective Tuesday, will not impact the flow of letters and 'flats' from China and Hong Kong, according to the website.
The USPS did not immediately comment on whether this was tied to President Donald Trump's change of ending 'de minimis' shipments from China and other countries.
Trump's halt to Section 321 de minimis is part of his implementation of an additional 10% tariff on China and 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which were paused for a month.
Nearly half of all packages shipped under 'de minimis' come from China, the U.S. congressional committee on China said in a June 2023 report.

WSJ: 'Entire' CIA Offered Buyout

The entire CIA workforce was offered a buyout as the Trump administration seeks to cut the size of the federal government, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
The buyout comes amid efforts to bring the agency in line with the Trump administration's agenda, according to the report. Ostensibly, the CIA is the first intelligence agency to receive such an offer: receive eight months of pay and benefits in exchange for their resignation.
An aide to the newly confirmed CIA Director John Ratcliffe said the agency is also freezing its hiring process. Those under the offer of a job will be screened to see if they meet the Trump administration's new goals: trade war, going after Mexico's drug cartel, and deterring Chinese influence.
The aide also pointed out that Trump's CIA will play a greater role in the Western Hemisphere, focusing on countries that are not typically viewed as adversaries of the U.S., according to the report.
For instance, the CIA will employ espionage to provide Trump with additional leverage in his trade negotiations, potentially conducting surveillance on Mexico's government amid the ongoing trade dispute. Furthermore, the CIA will take on a significant role in combating Mexican drug cartels, which Trump designated as foreign terrorist organizations on his first day in office.
