Pentagon Drafting Plans To Pull All US Troops From Syria, Fulfilling Longtime Trump Pledge

Is President Trump going to finally fulfill his long-stated pledge to bring the troops home from Syria? The reporting consensus is that he actually tried to during his first administration, but it received massive pushback from US defense and intelligence officials at the time, amid an outcry from the hawkish deep state Washington blob. But is it for real this time? NBC reports the following on Wednesday amid a new realignment of Mideast priorities in the wake of Bashar al-Assad's December 8 ouster, and now that the Islamist faction HTS is ruling from Damascus…

"The Defense Department is developing plans to withdraw all U.S. troops from Syria, two U.S. defense officials told NBC News on Tuesday." The NBC report adds, "President Donald Trump and officials close to him recently expressed interest in pulling U.S. troops out of Syria, the officials said, leading Pentagon officials to begin drawing up plans for a full withdrawal in 30, 60 or 90 days."

For years the Pentagon claimed that just 1,000 US troops were occupying the oil and gas region of Syria's northeast region, in support of Syrian Kurdish groups. Special forces have long been advising and assisting the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). More recently, the Pentagon has confirmed at least 2,000 are actually there. Likely there are many more contractors and intelligence operatives as well.

"Trump’s new national security adviser, Mike Waltz, spent Friday at the headquarters of U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida, meeting with senior U.S. military leaders and getting briefings on the Middle East, according to U.S. defense officials," NBC continues.

A Syria pullout has been a long time in coming. But the Pentagon has repeatedly touted the troop presence as part of a key 'anti-ISIS' mission - though it's been clear to all that it was really about 'thwarting Iran' while keeping pressure on Damascus and the prior Assad government.

Regional reports have documented that Syrian oil was ferried across the border into Iraq, after during Trump's first presidency he declared that American forces were "securing the oil". Syria produced enough oil and gas to supply its own domestic needs, and does never had enough to be an oil exporting power.

Thus from the start the occupation of the major oil fields was more about crippling the Syrian economy alongside Washington sanctions, a resource grab which has hit the Syrian population hard. Even now, Damascus has about an hour of electricity per day, and many households are making due with the help of solar panels.

NATO member Turkey has long railed against the Pentagon presence in northern Syria, and considers the SDF but a 'terrorist' extension of the outlawed PKK.

A grand deal could be in the works, given Turkey is reportedly negotiating the set up two Turkish army bases inside Syria, also as Syria's new self-declared president Ahmed al-Sharaa (his AQ name is Abu Mohammad al-Jolani).

At the tail end of the Biden administration, the Pentagon suddenly 'learned' of its own bigger force posture in Syria…

Netgear urges users to patch major router security issues now

Two flaws affecting multiple products were addressed

Netgear found two flaws affecting WiFi access points and routers

To mitigate them, it released new firmware for the devices

The company urged users to apply the fix as soon as possible

Netgear has confirmed recently fixed a number of critical-severity vulnerabilities, plaguing multiple access points and routers.

Since the bugs can be exploited in attacks requiring no user interaction, and could result in remote code execution (RCE), Netgear urged its customers to apply the released fixes without delay.

A Netgear security advisory noted the two flaws are internally tracked as PSV-2023-0039 (a remote code execution flaw), and PSV-2021-0017 (an authentication bypass flaw). They affect these WiFi 6 access points and Nighthawk Pro Gaming Routers: XR1000, XR1000v2, XR500, WAX206, WAX220, and WAX214v2.

Reaching end-of-life status

"NETGEAR strongly recommends that you download the latest firmware as soon as possible," the company said in the security advisory, before giving a step-by-step tutorial on how to download and install the latest firmware for Netgear routers.

"NETGEAR is not responsible for any consequences that could have been avoided by following the recommendations in this notification,” it warned.

Internet routers and WiFi access points are among the most attacked devices because they serve as the gateway between a local network and the internet. They are also often considered a “low hanging fruit” in cyberattacks, since many have default credentials, outdated firmware, or weak security configurations. In many instances, users keep their devices past their end-of-life date, losing support and exposing themselves to known vulnerabilities.

Attackers can use compromised routers for botnets, man-in-the-middle attacks, DNS hijacking, or data interception. Since routers operate 24/7 and control network traffic, an attacker who gains control can redirect users to malicious sites, steal credentials, or deploy malware across networks.

Always with the labels

Antisemites condemn Trump's relocation plan in refusal to accept the State of Israel

A comprehensive and unequivocal solution to the Gaza problem is tantamount to accepting the long-term existence of the State of Israel.

The anti-Israel world was in an uproar these past days like they hadn’t been since the beeper operation. At issue: President Donald Trump’s proposal to exit the Israeli-Gazan bloodshed cycle by opening Gaza’s borders for emigration.

The outcry reached the heavens – how could this be?! After all, Gaza is their land, homeland, crucible, and the joy of two million people who, strangely enough, are the only ones who see it as a temporary refugee camp and search for any way to escape it.

Among the antisemites’ responses worldwide, the response of Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares caught my eye. Under Albares, Spain has become a world leader in hatred of Israel, having joined the lawsuit against Israel in The Hague, rushed to impose an arms embargo on Israel, plus sanctions on Israelis, cutting ties, and more delicacies for the antisemitic palate.

“Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and they must stay there!” announced Albares. They must! This, coming from a representative of a country that once expelled hundreds of thousands of citizens just because they were Jewish.Albares is just one on the list of leaders who jumped in panic, and he, at least, doesn’t bother to arm himself with moral arguments. The Gazans must stay, in his opinion, alive or dead, and it’s clear why.

It is not moral opposition to transfer that stands behind the declaration. After all, the world’s nations don’t oppose population movements: In 1948, when all Jews of Arab countries were expelled from their states with only their clothes on their backs, Spain didn’t claim it was a moral injustice. There was no Spanish opposition when Jews were evacuated from Sinai in 1982, nor when Israelis were evacuated from Gush Katif in 2005.
