Gov. Andrew Cuomo Pardons 7 Ex-Criminal Immigrants To Prevent Their Deportation
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo pardoned seven illegal immigrants that are facing deportation on Monday morning.
“At a time when President Trump and the federal government are waging a war on our immigrant communities, New York stands firm in our belief that our diversity is our greatest strength. While President Trump engages in politics that rip children out of the arms of their mothers and tries to ramp up the deportation of New Yorkers to advance his political agenda of hate and division, we will protect our immigrant communities,” Cuomo said, according to ABC News.
Said ex-criminals have allegedly led crime-free lives over the last seven years, at minimum, which was the base requirement of Cuomo’s decision to pardon these seven individuals and excuse their old crimes.
Five of the seven recipients were arrested for either possession of or intent to sell a controlled substance, one of whom was convicted for possession and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The other two faced petty larceny charges.
This is the third time Cuomo has pardoned a group of criminals that were potentially getting deported.
He is going up against former television star Cynthia Nixon for the Democratic nomination to be New York’s governor. As recently as last week Cuomo had over a 25-point lead.

Rand Paul Going to Russia to Discuss Trade, Peace
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., says he will go Russia in an attempt to prevent further escalation of tensions between the two nations.
His announcement that he will meet with unnamed Russia leaders came in a column for Politico. It follows President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
"In just a few weeks, I will take my own trip to Russia in an attempt to discuss common ground with their leaders and help prevent further, unnecessary escalation of tensions," Paul said. "We will discuss trade, cultural exchanges and how to better work for peace and prosperity in the world.
"I look forward to consulting with Trump between his visit and mine and to working with diplomats from both countries to have a successful trip and better relationships. Millions of lives could be at stake."
And Paul, whose column was posted as Trump and Putin got set to meet, praised the president for the summit.
"I am thankful that Trump is once again willing to go against the political elite in Washington and keep the lines of communication to Moscow open.
Russia doesn't need to be considered our friend. But we certainly have overlapping interests — Syria, Islamic terrorism and energy — that require us to have an open dialogue and relationship."
Paul said keeping dialogue open is key to foreign policy.
"Dialogue is especially important when hundreds of millions of lives are at stake, as is the case in relations between the United States and nuclear-armed Russia," he said.
"So I applaud Trump for both chiding our NATO allies and greeting its expansion with skepticism, and I applaud him for sitting down with Putin. We should be doing more of such self-examination and dialogue."
Following Trump's meeting with Putin, the U.S. president blamed "both countries" for the strained relationship, The Washington Post noted.

Toronto Mayor Calls for Stricter Gun Control After Deadly Mass Shooting
A gunman killed 2 and injured 13 more in Toronto last night in a mass shooting, with the attacker later shooting himself.
Toronto Mayor John Tory has raised the issue of strengthening gun control in the city in an address to the city council on July 23 following a mass shooting in the Danforth area of Toronto, which took place last night. He reminded the council that he had brought up the issue several times in the past, but had been ignored.
"I have said for some time that this city has a gun problem and that guns are far too readily available for far too many people. You've heard me ask the question of why anybody would need to buy ten or twenty guns, which they can lawfully do under the present laws […] Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?" Tory asked city council members.

A shooter killed two, a woman and a young girl and injured 13 more in the attack, which took place on July 22 in the Danforth area of Toronto. The shooting after the assailant shot himself.
