Let me break this down for you. Most databases, including USA Spending, work in an "append-only" way. That means they store entire records as a whole, adding new ones over time. Their search systems (indexes) are built to find whole records or parts of records efficiently—but they aren’t designed to search for specific words inside a giant chunk of text.
Now, USA Spending is massive—about 1.5 terabytes—so if you want to find a specific word or phrase buried somewhere inside, the system struggles. It’s just not built for that kind of search.
What I did with http://DataRepublican.com was add a reverse index on top of as many USA Spending records as possible. This makes searching much faster. When I run it locally, it’s 40% faster than grep—and that includes all the extra work like unzipping files, handling the user interface, and managing search requests. In other words, I made it as fast and searchable as possible. As a bonus, it is all client side, so it can never get overloaded like USA Spending so frequently does.
So instead of mocking the fact that we’re "rediscovering" data, maybe ask yourself why it’s been made so hard to search for this information in the first place.

Twitter's Response to Hunter Biden Laptop Story
Former Twitter executives appeared before the House Oversight Committee, testifying there was "no conspiracy" at the company against conservative voices as they discussed Twitter's response to the New York Post's Hunter Biden laptop story. Anika Collier Navaroli, Twitter's former U.S. Safety Policy Team senior expert, focused her remarks on the company's reluctance to censure former President Trump's rhetoric on the platform in the lead up to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, saying, "Twitter's leadership bent and broke their own rules in order to protect some of the most dangerous speech on the platform." A variety of topics were covered, including the FBI's involvement with Twitter, free speech protections and violations, combating disinformation on social media platforms, and Hunter Biden's involvement with the Ukrainian company Burisma.

Trump v. Anderson Supreme Court Oral Argument
The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Trump v. Anderson, a case on whether Colorado can exclude former President Donald Trump from its 2024 presidential primary ballot. The state's Supreme Court ruled him ineligible, citing that he violated the Constitution for his role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This case originated after a group of Colorado voters filed a suit seeking to keep the former president off the ballot. They argued that he engaged in insurrection and therefore was not qualified to be president under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. The Supreme Court was expected to rule quickly on this case amid Colorado's upcoming primary election on March 5, 2024. The Court ruled on February 8, 2024 that only Congress can enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment; therefore, Colorado may not remove Mr. Trump from the ballot.

U.S. Senate: Senate Impeachment Trial Day 1, Impeachment Managers' Constitutionality Arguments
Day 2 of the impeachment trial of former President Trump for incitement of insurrection began with senators voting 89-11 in favor of the trial organizing resolution. Lead Impeachment Manager Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) then made opening remarks followed by a 13-minute video showing footage of former President Trump's January 6, 2021, speech and of the actions of those who stormed the U.S. Capitol that day. Afterward, impeachment managers Representatives Raskin, Joe Neguse (D-CO), and David Cicilline (D-RI) presented their arguments for the constitutionality of impeaching a former president. Representative Raskin in his arguments talked about bringing his daughter and son-in-law with him to the Capitol on January 6.

Hearing on Oversight of Justice Department
Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI), Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) testified Justice Department and FBI oversight at the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government's first hearing. The senators claimed Democrats and the FBI discredited their joint investigation into the Biden family. Rep. Raskin said the committee itself is a form of governmental weaponization. Ms. Gabbard said citizens should decide for themselves what constitutes misinformation, citing U.S. government overreach on the matter. Legal professionals and two former FBI special agents testified in a second panel. Republicans asked about the FBI's communications with Twitter on alleged election misinformation and the Hunter Biden laptop story. Democrats said Republicans are using the subcommittee for political reasons and that heated rhetoric against the FBI was causing an increase of threats and violence against the agency's employees.
