Chicago Lurie Children's Hospital pauses gender surgeries for patients under 19 after Trump order

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago's Lurie Children's Hospital said it is pausing all gender care surgeries for patients under the age of 19 in the wake of President Donald Trump's executive order on gender care.

The hospital issued a statement Monday saying, "We are reviewing the recent Executive Orders addressing gender care and assessing any potential impact to the clinical services we offer to our patient-families. Our team will continue to advocate for access to medically necessary care, grounded in science and compassion for the patient-families we are so privileged to serve."

In the wake of that review, the hospital said it made the "difficult decision" to pause surgeries within the gender care program "as we work to understand the rapidly evolving environment."

Officials said they are still providing "other care and treatment plans" for the programs patients, and monitoring further developments.

Trump, a Republican, last week signed an executive order that directed agencies to take steps to make sure that hospitals receiving federal research and education grants "end the chemical and surgical mutilation of children." The language in the order - using words such as "maiming," "sterilizing" and "mutilation" - contradicts what is typical for gender-affirming care in the United States.

Gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth is not common but such treatments have been the subject of fierce political debate. Fewer than 1 in 1,000 adolescents in the U.S. with commercial insurance received puberty blockers or hormones during a recent five-year period, according to a new study.

Elon Musk’s DOGE has swept into 14 federal agencies - here’s what to know

Staffers and allies of Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE Service have fanned out across Washington in recent days, seeking access to sensitive data and disrupting operations in at least 14 government agencies in pursuit of a dramatically smaller federal government.

DOGE, which stands for the Department of Government Efficiency, has not disclosed the names of its staff. But The Washington Post has identified more than 30 people working for or closely with it by examining the internal directories of multiple agencies and interviewing numerous federal workers, virtually all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

About half of those identified have ties to Musk or his companies. Among them are Luke Farritor, 23, a recent intern at Musk’s rocket company, SpaceX, and Steve Davis, president of Musk’s tunneling company, Boring Co. Davis, one of Musk’s most trusted deputies, oversaw cost-cutting at the social media platform Twitter, which Musk bought in 2022 and renamed X.

Musk loyalists in other positions include Amanda Scales, the new chief of staff at the Office of Personnel Management, who worked at xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company; three of her direct reports previously worked for SpaceX. And Thomas Shedd, who was recently named director of a critical tech unit within the General Services Administration, worked for years at Tesla, Musk’s electric car company.

Musk’s allies have established their strongest footholds in three agencies: OPM, which oversees the federal workforce; GSA, which controls real estate and logistics; and the Department of the Treasury, which manages the nation’s finances. Each office aligns with a key Musk goal: to reduce the number of government workers, to diminish the government’s overall footprint and to slow the flow of government cash to recipients deemed unworthy.

DOGE posted on its X account Friday night that “coordination across 35 agencies over the last two days” had resulted in cuts of $250 million through the termination of 199 contracts. It did not name the agencies or the contracts; DOGE staffers have indicated their intention to eliminate every contract not essential to operations or required by law.

While DOGE’s reach is broad, its numbers appear to be relatively small. Some DOGE associates have received official government credentials, including official email addresses, at multiple agencies, according to documents and interviews. For example, some of the 19 DOGE workers added to the Department of Education’s internal address book, according to a list obtsined by The Post, also have GSA or OPM email addresses, according to documents and interviews.

Not all DOGE staffers and allies identified by The Post have clear ties to Musk. For example, Noah Peters, 39, is an attorney who worked at the Federal Labor Relations Authority; he stated on his LinkedIn profile that he has worked since January as a senior adviser at OPM. Peters was one of a few point people placing career officials on administrative leave at the U.S. Agency for International Development, according to a USAID official who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution. As an attorney in the private sector, Peters once represented the National Rifle Association. He did not respond to a LinkedIn message requesting comment.

At least 10 DOGE staffers identified by The Post are engineers. Among them is Alexandra Beynon, 36, according to Education Department records seen by The Post and an official with knowledge of the matter. Beynon previously was head of engineering at Mindbloom, a company started by her husband, Dylan Beynon, that “offers guided at-home ketamine therapy to transform your mental health.”

At least six DOGE engineers are 25 or younger, including Farritor, a Nebraskan who last year was a cowinner of a $700,000 prize for decoding a Roman scroll. Two others in this youthful group came under scrutiny this week.

On Thursday, Marko Elez, 25, resigned from public service after the Wall Street Journal tied him to a since-deleted social media account that featured racist posts, including the boast that he was “racist before it was cool.” On Friday, Musk, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance all called for Elez to be reinstated. Elez was one of two people affiliated with DOGE who accessed a Treasury Department payments system responsible for disbursing more than $5 trillion annually.

And on Friday, Bloomberg reported that Edward Coristine, 19, was fired from an internship at a cybersecurity company for leaking internal information to a competitor. Coristine, who has gone by the online moniker “Big Balls,” worked briefly last year at the Musk brain chip company Neuralink, according to Wired.

Coristine is now listed as an “expert” at OPM.

Mystery seed packages from China

AUSTIN – Today, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced new reports of unsolicited seed packages arriving across Texas from Chinese vendors. The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) is working swiftly to safely collect these packages and ensure they are delivered to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) for inspection. One Texan reported ordering a dog toy from the Chinese vendor TEMU, only to receive a package of seeds instead. With the total number of reported packages now at five statewide, Texans are urged to exercise caution when opening any unexpected packages from China.

“It’s clear there’s a trend here, and Americans nationwide need to stay vigilant," Commissioner Miller emphasized. “The importance of biosecurity for our country shouldn't be overlooked. We heard back from APHIS; sure enough, the first reported package included an invasive plant species. We need everyone’s support to report these unsolicited packages from China.”

APHIS has identified the seeds and liquid in the package delivered earlier this week to Clute, Texas. The seeds were identified as Sacred Lotus or Nelumbo nucifera seeds, also known as Indian lotus, an aquatic plant. The unlabeled liquid was also confirmed as an accompanying nutrient solution. Sacred Lotus is considered an invasive aquatic plant in many regions, particularly when introduced outside its native range in Asia. While invasive, it is not listed on the federal noxious weed list and is only prohibited in one state, Wisconsin.

“These packages should never have gotten through customs,” Commissioner Miller explained. “Without the proper documentation and consent, the shipment did not meet the entry conditions for the United States. We need to close this loophole in our biosecurity protections. It’s a vulnerability to national security."

An invasive species is an organism that is not native to a particular region. The introduction of this “alien species” can cause economic or environmental harm. In agriculture, an invasive species can destroy native crops, introduce disease to native plants, and possibly harm livestock.

The contents of these packages will be destroyed through steam sterilization at no cost to the recipients. TDA’s partners at APHIS will share the detections with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to identify similar small mail packages from the same sources.

If you receive a foreign package containing seeds, do not open it. Keep the contents sealed in their original packaging and immediately contact the TDA toll-free at (800) TELL-TDA.

Aussie teacher who 'identifies as a cat' accused of hissing at students and licking the back of their hands

A high school teacher who allegedly identifies as a cat has been accused of 'hissing' at students and licking the back of their hands in class.

The bizarre classroom behaviour was witnessed by students at Marsden State High School in Waterford West in Queensland.

The teacher is seen wearing a black and white cat ear headband in class and at school assembly in photos first obtained by the Courier Mail.

Students allege the teacher asked to be referred to as 'Miss Purr' and wears a lanyard with the word 'purr' on it.

A relative of one student claimed the teacher had hissed at them after they failed to answer a question or pay attention in class.

'(The teacher) sits in class and licks her hands,' the relative said.

'It's absolutely disgusting.

'Something needs to be done about this.'

Another parent said they wanted their child to have teachers they can 'look up to' which 'isn't someone who wears ears'.

One mum alleged the teacher made her daughter 'purr' for a lolly.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the behaviour 'wasn't acceptable in Queensland state schools'.

'The school is aware of parents' concerns and the principal has addressed the issue directly with the teacher,' a statement read.

'Teachers are held to the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.'

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Marsden State School for comment.
