Tape Shows Israelis Training Cartels’ Killers

Aug. 30, 1989

BOGOTA, Colombia — Experienced Israeli instructors trained private paramilitary units whose members included a leader of the Medellin drug cartel’s death squads, blamed in the killings this month of four judges and nine court workers, according to a videotape prepared by the Israelis themselves.

The 48-minute color videotape clearly showed former Israeli army Col. Yair Klein running military and assassination training exercises for about 50 men, including one known as Vladimir. Other foreigners speaking Hebrew were shown and heard on the videotape.

Vladimir, whose real name is Alfredo Vaquero, is identified by Colombian authorities as the leader of the Medellin cartel’s paramilitary organization. He was arrested 10 days ago and charged with murder in the slayings of the judges and court workers.

In addition to Vladimir, the security authorities identified at least four key figures in Colombia’s massive drug trade as attending a graduation ceremony at the end of the training program.

A secret report prepared for a government security agent also disclosed that the trainees in the film had been recruited at the behest of Pablo Escobar and Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha, two leaders of the Medellin cartel.

The video was prepared by Klein as a promotion for a company, The Spear of Glory, that he had established to train paramilitary groups, according to Gen. Miguel A. Maza Marquez, head of the Administrative Security Department, Colombia’s equivalent of the FBI.

Maza said in an interview with two American reporters that the film, captured in a raid on the house of an alleged recruiter for the death squads, Henry Perez, “is undeniable evidence” that the Israelis have trained the drug cartels’ forces.

And, according to Maza, Vladimir has told interrogators that “his instructors were Israelis.”

At one point in the interview, the general declared that “I know we can make the connection” between the Israeli-trained drug forces and the murder Aug. 18 of Luis Carlos Galan, the leading candidate in the country’s upcoming presidential election. It was Galan’s murder that initiated the current drug crackdown in Colombia.

Maza said a witness to the assassination, himself a former member of a drug-sponsored paramilitary group, asserted that three suspects now under arrest in the killing of Galan had trained with him under Israeli instructors.

For the event, which was also attended by his dad and sister Willow Smith, Jaden rocked a custom black Louis Vuitton suit, a white button down and black tie. But the most notable part of his ensemble was the all-black, custom-made vampire house headpiece made by ABODI Transylvania in collaboration with artist Szilveszter Makó that covered most of his head and face, an art piece the brand has since shed some light on.

What’s a blue state governor to do?

President Trump has unprecedented power to punish his enemies. Can Governor Maura Healey avoid making us more of a target?

What’s a blue state governor to do when a volatile and vindictive president uses his power to harm those who dare to stand up to him? Especially when that governor campaigned super hard against the new king?

If you’re Governor Gavin Newsom of California, you make like your pre-election criticisms of candidate Donald Trump never happened and start saying nice things, because your state was devastated by wildfires and you desperately need federal funds to rebuild.

If you’re Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, you continue your withering takedowns as if the election never happened and watch Trump try to make an example of you.

Our governor appears to have settled on a middle path so far. She was a vehement advocate for former vice president Kamala Harris in 2024, but now Maura Healey, too, faces the reality that antagonizing Trump means he could use the federal government to punish her constituents. So, after the election, she took a more conciliatory tone, pledging to work with him when she could.

Where is she now, after three weeks of Trump, co-president Elon Musk, and his army of adolescent Musketeers unleashing chaos upon the country, freezing vital funding, threatening to kill entire agencies, deporting more immigrants, and striking terror into vulnerable communities?

She appears to be trying to do her job and avoid panicking the populace. Dealing with the firehose of lawless and immoral pronouncements from the Oval Office is a full time deal, and she already has one — for which she is running again, she announced on Friday. So far, Healey seems to have decided not to react publicly to every single outrage coming from the White House — the threats to trans health and sanctuary cities, for example. She has been picking her battles, planning for the inevitable funding crises, and trying to protect her constituents without fueling the fears that have kids staying away from schools and patients away from community health centers. Or putting a bigger target on our backs, Trump-wise.

“Our job is to stay steady, to stay focused, to stand up where we need to,” she said during an interview in her office last week. “And to make sure people are understanding and seeing what’s happening.”

She expected Trump to do what he has done, given that he and his backers laid it all out before the election. But the ascendancy of Musk — and his access to the sensitive personal details of millions of Americans — has enraged and genuinely surprised her.

“I think what [Trump] did, allowing Musk in … I certainly didn’t contemplate,” Healey said. The other outrages — the unlawful executive orders, the terrifying talk of ethnic cleansing and redevelopment of an American-controlled Gaza — are distractions from what Musk is doing, she said: Gutting the government to do untold damage to ordinary Americans.

“It’s amazing to me,” she said, “we have somebody who was not elected to office, who has unfettered and illegal access to the keys of the kingdom, to all data, to all payment systems.”

Over a third of this state may have voted for Trump, but Healey reckons Musk’s mayhem offends voters of both parties. Nobody signed up to have some obscenely rich guy get control over their Social Security numbers and tax refund info, and promise to “fix” things he has no business being near, including the FAA, which keeps planes from crashing.

“Somebody should look at Elon Musk’s record,” Healey said. “How many rockets did he blow up?”

Actually, at SpaceX they prefer the term ”rapid unscheduled disassembly.”

Anyway, Healey believes making folks aware of what Musk is doing is the key to returning the country to rationality one day. So she’ll keep talking about him.

And what would she tell someone who is feeling powerless to stop the rapidly unfolding catastrophe?

“The last thing people should do is tune out. They need to be engaged,” she said, by which she means pushing Congress to do more, supporting journalism, working to blunt attacks on our unluckiest neighbors.

“Now is the time to get more connected,” she said.

Meantime, Healey will keep walking her fine line. But let’s not forget how appalling it is that that line exists in the first place: We are ruled by a president who disdains the half of the country that rejected him, and thinks nothing of using his awesome power to punish us for it.
