Pope wants Ukrainians to forgive Russians

Pope Francis has urged young Ukrainians to exercise forgiveness in the face of the countryโ€™s conflict with Russia, despite all the suffering and destruction that has ensued. The leader of the Catholic church has previously drawn sharp rebukes from Kiev for calling on the Ukrainian leadership to negotiate peace with Moscow.

Speaking via video link during a Q&A session with Ukrainian youth in and outside the country last Saturday, the Pope said it was important to resist the urge to โ€œrespond to a punch with another punch.โ€

โ€œForgiveness is one of the hardest things. It is difficult for everyone, even for me,โ€ he expounded, urging the listeners to โ€œkeep moving forward and always forgive.โ€

According to the pontiff, โ€œlife today is devalued. Money and war positions are given more importance than human life itself.โ€

Pope Francis suggested that the โ€œremedy is dialogueโ€ฆ even with those who oppose us.โ€

โ€œPlease, never grow tired of dialogue,โ€ the pope added.
