HOLD THE CDC ACCOUNTABLE FOR FINDING THE ROOT CAUSE OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

The Issue

According to a CDC report in 2017, 7 million people have been diagnosed with autism disorder, 2% of the US population. Rates have skyrocketed over the past 50 years, from 1:10,000 in 1970 to 1:44 in 2021. Yet, after 70 years since this condition was first identified, there is still no known cause of this debilitating disease.

 

We demand that the CDC declare this condition a public health emergency and dedicate its vast resources to funding research and new treatments to stop this epidemic.

 

There are a small number of doctors who have uncovered a complex infectious cause for this disease that is transmitted by a tick bite. The infections may cause few symptoms, but can be passed congenitally during pregnancy by unsuspecting mothers and cause psychiatric issues in children. The tick bite is rarely observed. Bartonella has been found to be the primary infection. However, other infections are typically involved, such as Borrelia and Babesia.

 

For many parents, the symptoms can be minor and stealth, usually involving neuropsychiatric difficulties or autoimmune disease that develop slowly over decades. Current testing methods largely provide false negative results. For the few who eventually receive the correct diagnosis, treatment is very difficult and can take years of long-term antibiotics.

 

Here is the story of one 16 year-old child with ASD, who after finally being properly diagnosed, experienced remarkable improvements with long-term antibiotics. This child is not alone.

 

We demand answers and treatments, led by the CDC, for this devastating childhood epidemic.

 

Specifically, we demand the CDC provide extensive funding for research and effective treatments in the following ways:

 

• We demand the CDC declare autism spectrum disorder a public health emergency.

 

• Like COVID, we demand the full breadth of the CDC be brought to bear to conduct research on the underlying cause of autism spectrum disorder, and to develop effective diagnostics and treatments. The CDC must coordinate and involve universities, pharmaceutical companies, and diagnostic companies to expedite their response.

 

• Like COVID, we demand that diagnostics and treatment be funded in full, to guarantee health care access to all children and adults regardless of insurance coverage status or income level.

 

• We demand that all women who are pregnant or seeking to get pregnant, all newborns, and all children with ASD, ADHD, or psychiatric issues be screened for these infections using accurate testing that will need to be developed.

 

• We demand that the CDC advertise the need to get screened and the dangers of these infections aggressively to the public.

 

• We demand that medical bulletins and training be provided to all doctors on the dangers of these infections and methods for effective diagnostics and treatment.

 

• We demand that the CDC develop effective strategies to eliminate the further spread of the disease by all vectors (ticks, dogs, cats, fleas, mites, mosquitos, humans, etc) and by mandating screening of the blood supply for implicated pathogens.

 

• We demand an immediate response to this epidemic, which is out of control.
