Fuck COBOL. The dates were stored in a post Y2K database. The date field definition used in the database tables is up to the database designers ad maintainers. It wouldn't take much to ave Y2K-proof the date fields and criminal programmers to use ages 110 as a way to filter & manage [their] records.

You would need to see the table structure and the history of the data, such as if it was migrated what defaults were set in date fields, and the programs being used to interact with the data and the banks to verify this claim. Banks save everything anyway, so they should have more details.
