Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free
Praise the Lord and swing into position
Can't afford to be a politician
Praise the Lord, we're all between perdition
And the deep blue sea
Yes the sky pilot said it
Ya gotta give him credit
For a sonofagun of a gunner was he
Shouting Praise the Lord, we're on a mighty mission
All aboard, we ain't a-goin' fishin'
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free
Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

By mid-century, Nevada will be in the worst drought in 1,000 years, according to NASA scientists. Every drop of our water is going to be more precious than gold. When mines dig for smoke-sized particles of gold below the water table, groundwater is pumped to keep the pits dry. A mine can pump up to 70,000 gallons of groundwater per minute, using in five minutes what the average family of five uses in one year.
They pump water at volumes to rival the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s water grab from rural Nevada, and are creating a deficit that will require centuries to replenish – centuries during which springs will be dried and the Humboldt River will lose flow. Few realize that this water is not just being pumped from a pit and put somewhere else; it is being lost forever. In addition, most or all of these pits will consume water forever because of pit lake evaporative loss and permanent cones of depression.
Not only does gold mining waste enormous volumes of water, it contaminates our water and fisheries with highly toxic mercury. Newmont’s Twin Creeks Mine was the 9th largest source of mercury air emissions in the U.S, emitting 850 pounds of mercury in 2012. In 2013, the EPA called on Nevada to list an additional 19 streams, lakes, and rivers, to the methyl mercury fish warning list. While anglers had a no-catch limit at Wildhorse Reservoir, they risk getting poisoned by mercury if they eat four meals (eight ounces each) of Rainbow trout per month. For pregnant mothers, the limit is lower because methyl mercury in the bloodstream of unborn babies (and young children) may harm the developing nervous system.
