Ukrainian migrants face increased scrutiny in US – media

The immigration authorities are reportedly investigating beneficiaries of Biden-era programs for potential fraud

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has reportedly haltedthe processing of applications for benefits by migrants who entered the countryunder special programsestablished during Joe Biden’s presidency. This action, which affects tens of thousands of Ukrainians, effectively closes off avenues to other protection statuses, CBS News reported on Tuesday.

The previous administration utilized presidential parole to grant legal entry to specific groups deemed vulnerable or valuable to the US. President Donald Trump suspended these programs upon taking office last month. The initiative designed for Ukrainians known as Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) allowed more than 117,000 individuals to enter the US by mid-2023.

A memo dated February 14 from acting USCIS Deputy Director Andrew Davidson, cited by CBS, mandates an agency-wide “administrative pause” on all “pending benefit requests” fromindividuals who entered the US under U4Uand two similar categorical parole programs for people from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The initiatives required an American sponsor to endorse an applicant prior to entry and typically provide temporary work and residency permits. Davidson’s directiveeliminates the option to pursue other legal statuses, including permanent Green Card residency, thereby exposing recipients to potential deportation, CBS explained.

Davidson expressed concern overwidespread fraudand the failure to investigate potentialpublic safety risks associated with the three programs. He referenced the Biden administration’s decision last year to temporarily suspend CHNV, a parole initiative for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans.

Davidson said investigatorsuncovered thousands of CHNV applications with “serial sponsors” and other dubious information, with some cases confirmed as fraudulent. The memo added that some migrants were not “fully vetted.” The pause may reportedly be lifted following a “comprehensive review and evaluation” of the relevant population.

Trump’s 2024 presidential election campaign included a pledge to combat mass migration across the southern border and initiate large-scale deportations of individuals residing illegally in the US. Suspending categorical parole programs is part of his administration’s strategy to fulfill these commitments.

Trump brands Zelensky ‘dictator without elections’

The Ukrainian leader earlier criticized the US for holding peace talks with Russia and excluding officials from Kiev

US President Donald Trump has labeled Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky a “dictator without elections,” accusing him of mismanaging the conflict with Russia and misusing American financial aid. Tensions between Washington and Kiev have intensified following US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia this week.

Posting on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump criticized Zelensky, stating that the Ukrainian leader had “talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars, to go into a War that couldn't be won.” He further claimed that Zelensky “refuses to have Elections, is very low in Ukrainian Polls.”

“A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left,” Trump warned.

Trump’s assertions follow high-level talks between US and Russian officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday. The delegations discussed future Ukraine peace talks and a potential summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The discussions, which lasted 4.5 hours, did not include Ukrainian or other European representatives. The exclusion has drawn criticism from Kiev and its EU backers, with complaints that their interests are being sidelined in critical negotiations affecting regional security.

In response to the US-Russia talks, Zelensky addressed the media, expressing surprise and concern over Kiev’s absence from the meeting. He emphasized the importance of Ukrainian participation in any peace negotiations, stating that decisions made without Ukraine could undermine the nation’s sovereignty and the prospects for a lasting peace.

Zelensky accuses Trump of repeating ‘Russian disinformation’

The Ukrainian leaderinsists that his approval rating is significantly higher than the figure cited by the US president

US President Donald Trump’s claim that Vladimir Zelensky's approval ratings are dangerously low is Russian disinformation, the Ukrainian leader has insisted, claiming that a majority of Ukrainians trust his leadership.

During a White House press conference following a meeting between US and Russian officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, Trump suggested that Zelensky’s approval rating in Ukraine is 4%.

The Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KMIS) said on Wednesday, however, that in a survey in January, 57% of Ukrainians expressed trust in Zelensky, an increase from 54% the previous month.

Zelensky cited the Ukrainian poll as counter-evidence to Trump’s skepticism about the level of public support he enjoys. He noted that Ukrainian officials “are aware of this disinformation and recognize that it is coming from Russia.”He stressed that “if anyone wants to replace me right now, it’s not going to happen.”

He also urged Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, who is currently visiting Kiev, to “speak to the people and ask them if they trust their president, whether they trust [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. Let him ask them about Trump” and his remarks.

Speaking to media on Wednesday Trump pointed to the absence of elections in Ukraine due to Zelensky’s declaration of martial law. “I hate to say it, but he’s down at 4% approval.” He characterized the situation in Ukraine as dire, saying it has been “blown to smithereens” and is nearly impossible to live in.

Although Zelensky’s presidential term expired last year, he has not transferred authority to the parliament speaker, as mandated by the Ukrainian Constitution.

Zelensky has argued that holding an election under the current circumstances is both legally and technically infeasible, and that Ukrainians would oppose it amid the conflict with Russia. He also claimed that if an election were held, he would secure a second term. Recent opinion polls, however, suggest that he would lose to retired General Valery Zaluzhny in a runoff.

Russian officials have expressed concern regarding Zelensky’s legitimacy, saying that any international treaties he signs could be challenged. Moscow has indicated a willingness to negotiate peace with Zelensky, yet remains skeptical of his ability to finalize any agreements.

EU country bracing for migration wave from Ukraine – minister

The Czech Republic will end preferential treatment for asylum seekers once the conflict with Russia is over, Vit Rakusan has announced

The Czech Republic will prepare for a possible wave of immigration from Ukraine after the conflict with Russia is resolved, Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said on Tuesday.

Prague’s plan involves terminating preferential treatment of Ukrainian nationals seeking asylum in the country.

EU nations, including the Czech Republic, have granted temporary protection status to Ukrainian nationals who identify as refugees, providing various relief programs. In an interview with Novinky.cz, Rakusan expressed concern over a possible surge of migrants, should martial law be lifted in Ukraine and fighting-age men be allowed to exit the country legally.

”No matter how the war concludes, no one will be able to come here under temporary protection afterwards,” asserted Rakusan, who also serves as first deputy prime minister.

Following the policy shift, applications for residency – including from Ukrainian men seeking family reunification in the Czech Republic – will be processed under standard immigration rules, the minister said. Furthermore, Ukrainians will be regarded equally with other foreigners regarding social benefits such as housing assistance.

Government statistics indicate that over 397,000 Ukrainians currently hold protection status in the Czech Republic. Rakusan noted that approximately half of these individuals have expressed an intention to remain in the country beyond the conclusion of the conflict with Russia, although some may reconsider this once the new policy is implemented. Officials believe the Czech Republic can absorb 200,000 Ukrainians in the long run.

Prague is collaborating with Warsaw to effect necessary adjustments across the EU, according to Rakusan.Poland has become a major host for Ukrainian nationals, with estimates suggesting around 990,000 have relocated there during the conflict, effectively doubling the local diaspora. The two countries plan their response based on their collective experiences, recognizing that “Spain, France, or other nations not facing the same acute issues cannot prepare a proposal for us,” Rakusan explained.

Polish officials and media have recently raised concerns about Ukrainian military veterans being a potential security threat. This month, President Andrzej Duda warned that demobilized soldiers might contribute to organized crime, whilemilitary psychiatrist Radoslaw Tworus said Europe should be ready for an influx of veterans suffering from PTSD. Last year,

Ukrainians reportedly accounted for 9,753 out of 16,437 police detentionsof foreign nationals in Poland, surpassing all other non-Polish groups.

(The two sides of Zelensky)

Ukraine running out of Patriot missiles – Zelensky

The Ukrainian leader asked for the US to provide Kiev 20 more Patriot air defense systems, as well as missiles for them

Kiev’s forces are running out of missiles for their US-supplied Patriot air defense systems, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has said.

Zelensky revealed the predicament in a press conference in Kiev on Wednesday, a week after the administration of US President Donald Trump demanded Kiev repays the hundreds of billions in rendered US aid with Ukrainian mineral wealth, as well as moving to de-escalate the conflict. Trump froze US aid to Ukraine pending review soon after his inauguration last month.

Zelensky said he has sought a license for Ukraine to produce its own Patriots if direct supplies were not feasible, and complained of ammunition shortages. Ukrainian officers have reached out to warn that their air defense missile stocks are depleted, Zelensky said.

“Three, four, five in the morning, the chief commander calls me and says, we don't have missiles for Patriots. And says that there are eight missiles in the sky. But we don't have missiles,” he claimed.

Zelensky went on to ask for 20 more Patriot air defense batteries, specifying that US service members would not be required to operate them, as Washington has shown reluctance to deploying troops into Ukraine.

When asked about his refusal to sign a deal that would grant Washington access to Ukraine’s mineral resources, Zelensky replied that the document US representatives presented had “no word about security guarantees.” The document was “clear only in one thing. We have to give 50%,” Zelensky said.

White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes told AP that the Ukrainian leader was being shortsighted in refusing the “opportunity” the Trump administration was proffering.

The presented deal was outright “colonial,” AP wrote, citing a former senior Ukrainian official.

Last week, Trump said he demanded “the equivalent like $500B worth of rare earths,” in return for “more than $300 billion” the US provided Ukraine.

Speaking to the press after the completion of the Russia-US bilateral talks in Riyadh,Trump said he was “disappointed” about the conflict not being settled diplomatically in three years. When pressed, the US president said=Ukrainians are in no position to complain about not being invited to the negotiating table.

“Today I heard, ‘We weren’t invited.’Well, you’ve been there for three years, you should’ve ended it,”he said.

The Riyadh talks concluded with both US and Russian officials agreeing to continue efforts toward ending the war and restoring diplomatic relations.

‘Capitulation’ and ‘betrayal’: Ukrainian officials and media blast Trump over Russia talks

Politicians and journalists in Kiev have vented frustration over Washington’s approach to resolving the conflict

Ukrainian politicians and media have reacted with outrage and indignation following the talks between Russia and the US in Saudi Arabia this week. Theresponse has ranged from accusing US President Donald Trump of “capitulating” to Russian President Vladimir Putin and “betraying” Ukraine, to blaming the EU for the developments.

As a result of Tuesday’s talks in Riyadh – from which Ukraine and the EU were excluded – top Russian and US officials agreed to pave the way for the restoration of bilateral ties. They also agreed to work towards resolving the Ukraine conflict and to arrange a summit between Trump and Putin.

Both countries praised the talks as highly productive. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that the sides “not only listened, but also heard each other,” adding that the US was beginning to better understand Russia’s position.

Following the talks, Trump said he was “very disappointed” in Ukraine’s failure to resolve the conflict on its own, while suggesting that Kiev should contemplate holding elections. Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, whose presidential term expired last May, has refused to hold a vote, citing martial law, with Russia considering him an “illegitimate” leader.

The renewed engagement between Russia and the USsent shockwaves throughout Ukraine, with officials and media alike venting frustration.

Trump ‘helping’ Putin

Zelenskywas the most notable voice in this regard, describing the talks as “disreputable,”rebuking the US for “helping Putin get out of years of isolation” and treating Russia as “a victim.” The Ukrainian leader also dismissed Trump’s claim that he has only a 4% approval rating, citing a recent poll that put his public support at 57%. “If someone wants to replace me – you can’t do that right now,” he suggested.

Mikhail Podoliak, a top aide to Zelensky, suggested that theRiyadh talks mean that “international law no longer exists,” and that the overall Western approach is now “peace through weakness.” (We told you and everyone knew they are Nazis in Ukraine, no one listened)

Ukrainian lawmaker Mariana Bezuglaya lashed out directly at Trump, advising him to “follow the Russian ship,” a reference to an alleged incident early in the conflict when Ukrainian soldiers told a Russian naval vessel to “f**k off.”

Olga Aivazovskaya, the chair of the charity Opora, remarked that “America is great when it is the leader of the West, not the executor of Russian whims.”

‘Betrayal’ of Ukraine

TheUkrainian outlet Ligadid not mince its words as it denounced Trump for what itcalled “a shameful capitulation to Russia,” “an outright betrayal of Ukraine,” and “appeasement of Putin.” The talks are “a clear warning to the world that the US under Trump is no longer a defender of democracy, but an ally of a terrorist state,” the outlet claimed.

Alexandr Motyl, ASSHOLE professorof political science at Rutgers University, told Novaya Niva that the talks amounted to a “betrayal,” but claimed that the situation also stemmed from “the lack of a plan [and] preparation” on the part of the Trump administration.

The same outlet also described the negotiations as “yet another blow to Ukraine,” and accused Trump of lying about Zelensky’s approval rating while pointing out that the US leader “did not say a single critical word about Putin.”

Zelensky’s fate and Europe’s fault

Meanwhile, the Strana.ua news outlet characterized the talks as a “turning point for the situation around Ukraine,” acknowledging thatmany observers fear that Zelensky could be “dumped.”

The Eurointegration outlet, however, placed the blame for Ukraine’s current problems on Kiev’s backers in the EU, stating that while “European leaders knew that Vladimir Putin in the East and Donald Trump in the West was a strategically nightmare scenario, they have done almost nothing to achieve greater political unity and strengthen defense capabilities in anticipation of just such a development.”

“From now on, Russia, not the EU, will be the main partner of the United States,”it suggested.

EXCLUSIVE: VP J.D. Vance Warns Zelensky Over ‘Disgraceful’ Public Attacks on Trump, Confirms Ukrainian Elections Are Now U.S. Policy.

Raheem J. Kassam

30 minutes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In an exclusive interviewwith The National Pulse on Wednesday morning, Vice President J.D. Vance issued a stern warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding his public criticisms of President Donald Trump and the administration’s peace initiatives. Vance described Zelensky’s approach as “disgraceful” and counterproductive, emphasizing that such tactics could jeopardize Ukraine’s relationship with its most crucial ally.

BAD ADVICE.

“Zelensky is getting really bad advice, and I don’t know from whom,” Vance said. “He’s not dealing with Joe Biden and the Biden administration anymore. He’s dealing with Donald Trump and the Trump administration.”

Vance warned against Zelensky’s public protestations in recent days, stating, “The idea that he’s going to litigate his disagreements with the president in the public square—I mean, you [Raheem] know the President very well, obviously, I know the President very well. This is not a good way to deal with President Trump,” Vance said. “Of course, the Ukrainians are going to have their perspective. The way to surface that is in a private discussion with American diplomats… he’s attacking the only reason this country exists, publicly, right now. And it’s disgraceful. And it’s not something that is going to move the President of the United States. In fact, it’s going to have the opposite effect.”

The Vice President reaffirmed Trump’s policy on Ukraine: the war must end.He further asserted that U.S. policy now requires that Ukraine have elections.

“The president won the election. He won it convincingly. And he’s made clear that American policy is to stop the killing and bring the war to a close,” Vance said. “Now, I talked to the President this morning, actually, and he has an incredible amount of sympathy and admiration for the people of Ukraine. He wants the killing to stop because he doesn’t want innocent Ukrainians to keep losing their lives. So I think he very much thinks about this from the perspective, not just, of course, of his obligations to the United States, but also he just. He wants the brutality and the killing to stop.”

Vance went on, stressing the point: “He has said the goal of administration policy is to end the conflict. So now, you know that has to happen. Right. Zelensky has to take that seriously. Our European allies have to take that seriously. That is the goal of administration policy. You’re not going to move the President away from that goal. You’re not going to change his mind, certainly not by attacking him publicly in the media.”

ELECTIONS IN UKRAINE.

Elections in Ukraine are now U.S. policy, withVance making it clear that Zelensky must submit to a democratic mandate if he wants continued legitimacy. “Certainly, that would give him the strongest position, Raheem,” Vance said when asked if elections were necessary. “And I think that it’s a little rich for some of our European friends to attack Donald Trump for suggesting that Ukraine should have elections when they say that this is a war for democracy. How can you attack elections when your entire framing for the war in Ukraine is that it’s a war for democracy? I just think it’s ridiculous. And, of course, the United States had a civil war. We had an election in, of course, at the, at the end of as scheduled. You know, Churchill found out that he lost. As I understand it, he found out that he lost the British election at Potsdam.”

Vance, fresh from his European trip, where he lectured European leaders on free speech and matters of conscience, hit them again in our exclusive interview for their hypocrisy on democracy, questioning their insistence on blocking elections.

“The idea that you cannot have elections in the midst of a war is, I think, kind of a preposterous idea. And the President has made very clear that he thinks that should happen. So, you know, that is, that is American policy. And I think it’s. It’s pretty simple and straightforward.”

Martial law currently prohibits elections in Ukraine, with Zelensky having used the conflict with Russia to effectively crush opposition political parties and enrich his inner circle.

The Vice President’s remarks come just after President Trump himself blasted Zelensky as a “dictator” who “better move fast” for his country’s continued existence.
