Bio-hybrid drone uses silkworm moth antennae to navigate by smell
Feb 19, 2025
Conventional drones use visual sensors for navigation. However, environmental conditions like dampness, low light, and dust can hinder their effectiveness, limiting their use in disaster-stricken areas.
Researchers from Japan have developed a novel bio-hybrid drone by combining robotic elements with odor-sensing antennae from silkworm moths.
Their innovation, which integrates the agility and precision of robots with biological sensory mechanisms, can enhance the applicability of drones in navigation, gas sensing, and disaster response.
Technological advances have led to the development of drones with diverse applications, including navigation, gas sensing, infrastructure and transportation, imaging, and disaster response.
Conventional navigation systems in drones rely on visual sensors like thermal imaging and light detection and ranging (LiDAR).
However, environmental conditions such as low light, dust, and moisture can compromise their function, highlighting the need for more versatile alternatives.
In nature, animals, birds, and insects have an inherent navigation system based on their sense of smell that helps them locate food sources, evade predators, and attract potential mates, thereby promoting their overall survival.
Insects, in particular male moths, can detect windborne sex pheromones from distances that, in some cases, extend to several kilometers through a process known as odor-source localization.
Bio-hybrid drones that integrate these biological sensory mechanisms with advanced artificial machinery hold significant promise in overcoming the challenges associated with existing robotic technologies.
In this context, a team of researchers led by Associate Professor Daigo Terutsuki from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics, Faculty of Textile Science and Technology, Shinshu University, Japan, along with Associate Professor Toshiyuki Nakata and Chihiro Fukui from Chiba University, Japan, have used silkworm moth antennae to develop a novel bio-hybrid drone capable of odor sensing and tracking.
Explaining their motivation behind the study, Dr. Terutsuki says, "Our team is continuing to develop bio-hybrid drones that utilize living insect antennae as odor sensor elements.
In this research, we strive to incorporate the dynamic movements and mechanisms of living organisms to dramatically enhance the performance of our odor-tracking drones.
"We initiated this study with the belief that these advancements will enable more effective odor detection and broaden applications in rescue operations."

Previously, the researchers developed a bio-hybrid drone equipped with an electroantennography (EAG) sensor based on insect antennae with high sensitivity and specificity.
However, its applications were limited by a short detection range of less than two meters.
In the current study, the team has enhanced the primary version by further incorporating mechanisms that mimic the biological process in insects.
Insects pause intermittently during the odor-tracking process to improve search precision. However, robotic odor-search models lack such pauses in their operation which may impact their range of detection.
To address this, the researchers introduced a "stepped rotation algorithm" that mimics insect pauses during odor sensing, significantly improving detection accuracy.
They also redesigned the electrodes and EAG sensor to more effectively accommodate the structure of silkworm moth antennae.
The seamless interface between the gain-modulable (responsive to electrical signal intensities) EAG sensor and the insect antennae significantly improved the performance and operability of the system.
Additionally, the team used a funnel-shaped enclosure to reduce airflow resistance and applied a conductive coating inside the enclosure to minimize noise interference from electrostatic charging.
These modifications resulted in superior odor-source sensing under varied environmental conditions and odorant concentrations, with an effective detection range of up to 5 meters.
The diverse applicability of the odor-sensing bio-hybrid drone could potentially revolutionize gas leak detection in critical infrastructures, early fire detection, enhance public security at airports by detecting hazardous substances like drugs and explosives, and enable better disaster response by improving rescue operations.
This technology can be particularly useful in geographical regions that are more prone to natural disasters like earthquakes for rescue purposes.
"Traditionally, search and rescue efforts have relied on manual visual searches due to the absence of a definitive technology capable of efficiently locating individuals in distress.
The advanced bio-hybrid drone developed in this study has the potential to enable responders to rapidly locate survivors by tracking odors, ultimately saving more lives when every second counts," Dr. Terutsuki concludes.

Watch: 'Strange UFO fires' in skies over Cork, Ireland could be dying satellites
Updated17:32, 19 FEB 2025
There's been a UFO buzz across the world in recent months - and today one Rebel spotted a mysterious light whizzing over Cork city in the early hours of the morning.
Stephen Crowley saw the "weird glowing object" as he walked through the Togher area on his way home from work at around 3:30am - and quickly got his phone out to film it. You can see his two clips of the object above.
Stephen told CorkBeo: "I work security at night so I’m always up at that time - and it's the first time I’ve ever noticed something like this."
In the second clip the light resembles a meteor - or shooting star - with a trail in the sky behind it. However, it appears to be travelling slower than meteors, which tend to flare up for only a second.
It's not the first mysterious aerial object that Cork has witnessed. In 2021 Ireland was labelled the 'UFO capital of Europe' with one Leesider claiming to have seen a 'sequence of travelling dots in the sky.'
And in 2020 the Defence Forces warned city residents that they might spot strange things in the sky - as the military tested its hi-tech Orbital 2B drones.
Some recent sightings over Cork have received an explanation in the form of Starlink, the fleet of broadband satellites operated by Elon Musk's company Starlink.
Starlink satellites have often been witnessed travelling together in long strings - that appear to the untrained eye like a chain of interstellar spaceships.
The 'Find Starlink' website even allows you to plan ahead for a sighting of the satellites in your area.
Over the last couple of months, retired satellites from the first generation of Elon Musk's Starlink fleet have been re-entering the atmosphere and burning up.
In January alone more than 120 dead satellites lit up the skies across the globe as they fell from orbit.
The lifespan of a Starlink satellite is around five years - and the first were launched in 2019.
Stephen's sighting on Wednesday morning aligns closely with the predicted re-entry for a satellite named FALCON 9 R/B, which was launched on February 1 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Alien Autopsy: UFO hoax producer's flat goes on sale in Hampstead Garden Surburb
February 19, 2025
The north London home of the architect of one of the greatest UFO hoaxes of all time is on sale — yours for £795,000.
The mansion flat is the long-time London base of Gary Shoefield, a UFO enthusiast and film producer.
In the late 1990s he managed to convince the world that grainy footage of an alien autopsy — staged using a shop mannequin, makeup sourced from a funeral director, and slabs of raw meat — was the real thing.
His exploits were later turned into a movie, with TV presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly playing Shoefield and his friend Ray Santilli.
The film follows Shoefield and Santilli as they travel to the USA to buy Elvis memorabilia.
During their visit they met a former US Army cameraman who claims to own authentic footage of an alien killed in a UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico, being dissected.
The pair agreed to pay $30,000 for the film but on their return to the UK they realise — to their horror — that the film is damaged and is unwatchable.
Rather than cut their losses Shoefield and Santilli, who had borrowed the cash to buy it from a gangster acquaintance, decide to make their own film to replace it.
The alien autopsy footage was in fact shot in Shoesmith’s sister's flat in Islington.
Their DIY footage gained enough credibility to be screened in 1995 as a Fox Network TV documentary Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction which was watched by millions.
It was not until the Ant and Dec movie was released in 2012 that the hoax was confirmed.
Shoefield has since turned his attention to more benign forms of filmic chicanery, working on the hologram concert tours of the late Roy Orbison and Whitney Houston. He is now based in Beverly Hills.
His three-bedroom London flat is opposite the Hampstead Heath extension. It has recently been refurbished — so future residents won’t have to clean up any traces of fake alien blood.
The 826 sq ft home is on sale with estate agent Anderson Rose.
Located in Heathcroft, a red-brick 1920s mansion block in Hampstead Garden Suburb, the apartment has views over a communal courtyard garden. There’s a concierge service and off-street parking for one car.
House prices in Hampstead Garden Suburb were £1,511,700 on average last year, according to Rightmove. Flats, the most-sold property type, cost £679,230 on average.
