Two things:
a) Reminds me of Einstein's general relativity explanation, "a guy in a box" wouldn't know if the gravity he experienced was due to being on Earth; or, being weightless in space with a force accelerating the box at the exact same acceleration as gravity.
In other words: these guys were in a black box. They had no windows! They had to trust the data that was coming in. Data that could be hacked.
The helicopter was a missile. (Was used as a missile; and, a reference to the AF1 attack.)
b)Comms should be two-way!!!It is ridiculous for it not to be like "a phone call" with today's technology. Reminds me of Elon's discovery of a limit of 10,000 firings (per month?), because the paperwork was stored in a government mine shaft. (Wonder if that's been fixed, yet?)
Anyway the FTA and FCC should get together and fix this; there should never, ever be a way for a pilot to, through a routine action, silence any messages that are coming his way!
That just seems like a recipe for failure.

They grounded the airplanes for over a week back when 9/11 happened.
Perhaps now is a good time to repeat that. Save some lives. Find the culprits/controllers/etc. Then get back in the air.
