A Federal Court judge has dismissed a proposed $100 million class action lawsuit accusing the Public Health Agency of failing to maintain its emergency stockpile of medical supplies during the pandemic.

Blacklock's Reporter says the ruling emphasized that the courts were not the appropriate venue for a broad review of Canada’s early pandemic response.

“It constitutes a scattershot attack on all aspects of Canada’s early pandemic response,” wrote Associate Judge Trent Horne. “The plaintiffs are asking the Court to embark on an exercise akin to a public inquiry.”

Two plaintiffs who were hospitalized with COVID-19, along with representatives of a third plaintiff who died, sought certification of the lawsuit.

Their legal team argued that the Public Health Agency failed in its “duty to protect the health of Canadians,” did not follow its own pandemic plan, and neglected Canada’s supply of personal protective equipment.

Horne ruled the case too broad to proceed. “It must be plain and obvious, assuming the facts pleaded to be true, that the pleading discloses no reasonable cause of action,” he wrote.

Unlike several other countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and France, Canada has not launched a public inquiry into its pandemic response. A 2023 effort to initiate such an inquiry was rejected by Liberal MPs on the Commons health committee. Continue…

The UK on Sunday announced it would send Ukraine a measly $2 billion in military aid (compared to the US’s $350 billion+) after the Trump-Zelensky Oval Office blow-up.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer then announced he’s ready to send troops to Ukraine and encouraged Europe – and the US – to jump into World War III against Russia, a nuclear power.

“Britain’s Ministry of Defence said Thales (TCFP.PA), will manufacture the lightweight-multirole missiles for Ukraine. Thales said the missiles have a range of more than 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) and they can be fired from a variety of platforms on land, sea, and air,” Reuters reported.

“The UK is prepared to back this with boots on the ground and planes in the air to gather with others. Europe must do heavy lifting but to support peace on our continent, and to succeed, this effort must have strong US backing,” Starmer said during a press conference at the leaders’ summit in London on Sunday.

The investment would be used to build out cutting-edge chip-making facilities. Such an expansion would advance a long-pursued U.S. goal to regrow the domestic semiconductor industry after manufacturing fled largely to Asian countries in recent decades.

TSMC, the world's largest contract chip-maker, set down roots in Arizona in 2020, when it said it would build a chip factory there for $12 billion. Its ambitions for the site have expanded rapidly since, with two more factories on the same site and a total investment of $65 billion. The company's first factory began mass production late last year.

Since the Biden administration, the U.S. has expressed concerns about TSMC's near-monopoly on advanced chip manufacturing and has been urging the company to relocate more of its cutting-edge production, including advanced chip packaging facilities, to the U.S. Advanced chip packaging is particularly critical for AI related chips, as it enhances performance by integrating multiple semiconductor components, reducing size, improving power efficiency, and ensuring faster data transfer – key factors for AI applications.

President Donald Trump has said that the 25 percent tariffs against Canada and Mexico will go into effect on Tuesday and that there is “no room left for Mexico or for Canada” to avoid them through negotiations.

Trump told reporters at the White House, “Tomorrow — tariffs 25% on Canada and 25% on Mexico. And that’ll start." The tariffs are meant to put pressure on Canada and Mexico to stop the flow of fentanyl trafficking into the US.

The president originally said the tariffs would go into effect in February, but then gave the neighboring countries a month's time to negotiate and step up security to stop the illicit drug.

"Vast amounts of fentanyl have poured into our country from Mexcio, and as you know, also from China, where it goes to Mexico and goes to Canada," Trump added in his remarks at the White House.

On Monday, President Donald Trump pushed for US-based farmers to start growing more products for those in the country, citing his tariffs that are slated to go into effect on April 2.

Trump posted on Truth Social, "To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States. Tariffs will go on external product on April 2nd. Have fun!"

The encouragement from Trump to farmers in the US comes as he has announced that there will be reciprocal tariffs placed on imports to the United States starting in April, where if a country puts a tariff on imports from the United States, the US will tariff those goods with the same tariff as that imposed when the product are imported from that country to the US.

Trump has spoken about a number of different measures to implement tariffs, with a 25 percent tariff on all goods from Mexico and Canada slated to go into effect on Tuesday, with the exception of energy from Canada, which will only have a 10 percent tariff placed on it by the Trump administration.

According to Bloomberg, Trump has already placed a 25 percent tariff on steel as well as aluminum and has said he will take similar steps in different industries having to do with the manufacturing of cars as well as semiconductors.

The tariffs against Mexico and Canada have served as leverage on the issues of immigration as well as the flow of fentanyl coming across the northern and southern border.

In response, Canada and Mexico have pledged greater security measures in their own countries to keep on top of illegal immigration going into the US as well as drug smuggling.

That’s the message from Ottawa to US president Donald Trump and his quest to swallow up Canada’s critical minerals supply chain after Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson poured more than $500 million into critical infrastructure programs designed to maintain Canada’s lead in what is shaping up to be a critical geopolitical sector.

Now Ottawa is announcing a slew of new initiatives, including a two-year extension of the 15% Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC), a $500 million cash dump in energy and transportation infrastructure and a $50 million injection into Indigenous partnerships and data collection.

Wilkinson made the announcements in conjunction with the Department of Finance at the Prospectors and Developers Association conference in Toronto on Monday.

Langley explosion may have been drug lab

Authorities are investigating a deadly explosion that occurred at a residence in Langley on Friday.

The blast happened at 10:40 a.m. at a home in the 7300 block of 196 St.

Investigators have remained at the scene over the past few days to conduct a thorough examination.

"I can confirm that a deceased person has been located inside the residence," said Sgt. Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP. Authorities are working with the BC Coroners Service to identify the individual.

While the exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest it may be linked to an illegal drug extraction lab. However, a definitive conclusion will require further expert analysis.
