Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has halted a Biden-era contract to create a new COVID-19 vaccine, Fox News Digital reported on Tuesday.
“While it is crucial that the Department [of] Health and Human Services (HHS) support pandemic preparedness, four years of the Biden administration’s failed oversight have made it necessary to review agreements for vaccine production, including Vaxart’s,” Kennedy told the outlet in a statement.
“I look forward to working with Vaxart and medical experts to ensure this work produces safe, effective, and fiscal-minded vaccine technology,” he added.
The HHS contract is with American biotech company Vaxart Inc., which has been developing a new COVID-19 vaccine that is taken orally. Kennedy did not terminate the contract. Instead, the trial is paused with a 90-day stop-work order issued on Friday.

Summary:
The Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act (PREP Act) was passed by the United States Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush in December 2005.
The PREP Act is a controversial tort liability shield intended to protect pharmaceutical manufacturers from financial risk in the event of a declared public health emergency. The part of the PREP Act that actually affords such protection is now codified at 42 U.S.C. § 247d-6d.
The act specifically affords to drug makers immunity from actions related to the manufacture, testing, development, distribution, administration and use of medical countermeasures against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents of terrorism, epidemics, and pandemics.
Vaccine manufacturers lobbied for the legislation, which would effectively preempt state vaccine safety laws in the case of an emergency declaration by HHS, by making clear they would not produce new vaccines unless the legislation was enacted.

Toronto’s Cardinal Leo urges Trudeau government to stop ‘normalizing euthanasia’

Cardinal Francis Leo of the Archdiocese of Toronto has called out the Liberal federal government under Prime Minister Trudeau for “normalizing euthanasia,” a practice condemned as gravely sinful by the Catholic Church.
“Your government is normalizing euthanasia – by extension, those experiencing loneliness, isolation and depression associated with their medical condition are increasingly vulnerable to choosing euthanasia,” wrote Leo in a letter dated February 14 to Canada’s Health Minister Mark Holland.
“This is not something our country should be proud of. We should be judged by the care, love and dignity afforded to those who are most vulnerable, especially in moments of despair and suffering. Hastening death is not a breakthrough in healthcare.”
In his letter, Leo, who was elevated to cardinal late last year, noted that he is concerned about the wording of a recent survey from the federal government soliciting views from Canadians on the nation’s euthanasia program, which is called “Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).”
He noted that in his “opinion,” and from the opinion of those “deeply engaged in end-of-life issues,” “the wording and overall approach of the survey pre-supposes that those responding support euthanasia.”

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board has been sent a letter by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms threatening legal action over its policy prohibiting recordings or photos at public meetings.
A Canadian Catholic school board has been warned via a legal letter that its ban on photos or audio recordings of its public meetings is “unconstitutional” and possible legal action could ensue should the ban not be reversed.
In a recent press release, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) announced that a letter had been served to Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) chairman Bob Sikora and director Tyrone Dowling over its policy banning recordings.
According to the JCCF, Jack Fonseca, who is a resident of the Waterloo region and serves as the director of political operations for Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), attended a WCDSB public meeting on January 27, as he did “many” times before.
However, at this meeting, Fonseca, when he took out his phone to take a picture, was told by security he was allowed to take only one photo.
“Security then said he would not be allowed to record video or audio in the public meeting; if he tried to do so, he would be ejected,” the JCCF noted.
“Mr. Fonseca had photographed and recorded previous WCDSB meetings. He had seen others do the same, including members of the press.”
When Fonseca sought clarification from the Board, he was told by Sikora that the WCDSB had not “passed any policy forbidding photography or audio/video recording,” the JCCF said.
“Rather, it was the Director of Education and Secretary of the Board Tyrone Dowling who, on his own initiative, had instructed security staff to ban photography and recording.”
After Fonseca’s incident, the WCDSB placed a note on its website under “Meeting Information” that stated there were now new sign-in protocols for visitors that prohibited them from taking pictures or making audio/video recordings at board meetings.
Lawyer Hatim Kheir for Charter Advocates Canada, a group connected to the JCCF that served the letter, noted that “School boards are an important form of local democracy, but the reality is that very few people from the community are able to attend (meetings).” Continue…
Canada’s Supreme Court to stop using account on Elon Musk-owned X social media platform

No reason was given for the Canadian Supreme Court's move away from an account with 45,900 followers, but some MPs have been pushing the government to stop using X.
Canada’s Supreme Court says it will no longer use its X (formerly Twitter) social media platform and instead only post on Meta’s platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
“Dear subscribers – moving forward, we will be focusing our communication efforts on other platforms. We invite you to follow us on our LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts to continue receiving our updates. Thank you for your support,” the Supreme Court’s X page posted on February 26.
The announcement by the Supreme Court, which has been on the platform since 2015, comes despite the fact the page had 45,900 followers, which is much more than any other of its social media platforms. For context, the Supreme Court only has 11,000 followers on Facebook and 2,638 on Instagram.
The Supreme Court did not elaborate further on the reasons for ditching X. However, the move comes at the same time some Canadian MPs have been publicly calling for the Canadian government to stop using X because of its ownership by Elon Musk.
New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Charlie Angus went as far as starting an official petition on February 20 that people can sign, claiming that X has become a haven for “misinformation” and “conspiracy theories.”
The court joined the platform long before Musk’s 2022 takeover.
The petition reads, “The Canadian government and its agencies have historically used social media to provide timely updates during crises and major events,” adding that “X has become a platform widely criticized for amplifying misinformation, conspiracy theories, and harmful rhetoric.”
“The government’s continued use of X legitimizes and directs traffic to a platform that no longer prioritizes fact-based, accessible public communication,” the petition reads.
The petition goes as far as to call upon the government of Canada to “transition official government communications away from X to more secure, community-regulated platforms that prioritize public safety, accurate information, and accessibility.”

School-Age Child Dies in First U.S. Measles Fatality in Years as West Texas Outbreak Grows

The death was a “school-aged child who was not vaccinated” and was hospitalized since last week, the Texas Department of State Health Services told the Associated Press. Lubbock health officials also confirmed the death, but neither agency provided the outlet more details. Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock also did not reply to the outlet’s request for comment by time of publication.

The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) said Monday that an outbreak of a mysterious disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has killed 53 people since it began on January 21.
The outbreak appears to have begun after three children in the village of Boloko ate a bat.
Regional medical officials described the mystery illness as a haemorrhagic fever, like Ebola and the Marburg virus, but it has characteristics distinct from those infamous diseases. Tests of the victims came up negative for Ebola, Marburg, and yellow fever.
The new disease is fast-moving and frequently lethal. Regional doctors said the interval between first symptoms and death has been averaging 48 hours. The early symptoms include vomiting, high fever, and internal bleeding.
As of February 15, 431 cases of the disease had been confirmed across the DRC’s Equateur province, a vast and lightly populated region along the Congo River. The fatality rate of the outbreak works out to 12.3 percent.
W.H.O. noted that the “remote location and weak healthcare infrastructure” of the area increased the risk of disease transmission.
The initial outbreak in the village of Boloko was followed by infections in a nearby village called Danda, and then a much larger outbreak in the village of Bomate.

A small plane crashed in Manchester, Vermont, on Wednesday morning, and a rescue mission is underway.
The incident occurred Wednesday around 8:30 a.m. near Equinox Mountain. The plane involved is a Piper Cherokee Charger — a single engine plane — holding a maximum of four individuals, including the pilot. According to Flightradar24, the flight took off from Baltimore around 6 a.m.
According to Accuweather, rescue missions were underway, with first responders locating the plane before noon. “Romanian prosecutors allege that former kickboxer Tate, 38, his brother Tristan, 36, and two women set up a criminal organization in Romania and Britain in early 2021 and sexually exploited several victims,” AFP reported.
“We have no involvement in that,” DeSantis said. “I read about it through the media. Clearly, the federal government has jurisdiction whether they want to rebuff his entry into the United States, and I have confidence that whether it’s [Attorney General] Pam Bondi or [Homeland Security Secretary] Kristi Noem, that they will be looking at that.”
DeSantis also told reporters that Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is looking at what state jurisdiction they may have to “deal with this.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Trump at the White House on Thursday, where they discussed a plan to reach what he called a “peace that is tough and fair.”
“I’m working closely with other European leaders on this, and I’m clear that the UK is ready to put boots on the ground and planes in the air to support a deal, working together with our allies, because that is the only way that peace will last,” Starmer told reporters after the meeting.
Trump, however, sidestepped a question about whether the US would provide backup if such a deployment led to clashes with Russian forces, telling journalists before the meeting that the British “don’t need much help.”

Canada-China investigative journalist for The Bureau Sam Cooper has uncovered evidence Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney is influenced by an “elite network” of foreign entities.
Carney is the frontrunner of the leadership race, and is an apparent sweetheart of the Liberal party, including government-funded state media, the CBC. If he wins the March 9 vote, he will replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and waltz into the Prime Minister’s Office — despite never being elected as a politician in any capacity
Cooper, author of Wilful Blindness, says Carney is tangled up in “a constellation of global influencers deeply tied” to China’s trade and finance arms, particularly the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB),” and the World Economic Forum (WEF).
Beside Carney in that tangled web is Trudeau, which Cooper calls an “undebatable” fact."
The two are “so thoroughly woven together through global forums like the WEF that they are indistinguishable,” said Cooper in an expose published on Substack.
“And while Carney seeks to distance himself from Trudeau’s unpopular record, his closest allies remain the same WEF-linked figures who helped shape Trudeau’s policies.”
Among those named in Cooper’s expose are former Canadian ambassador to China Dominic Barton, Trudeau campaign backers Mark Wiseman and Gerald Butts, former CBC Power & Politics host Evan Solomon and Jin Liqun of AIIB, who is reportedly a senior Chinese Communist Party (CCP) operative and former Red Guard.

American oil policy got a little bit murkier on Thursday after Washington ditched a Venezuelan oil deal, Mexican exports fell by more than a third and US president Donald Trump prepared to move ahead with tariffs on Alberta oil imports.
Trump announced the decision on Truth Social media platform, stating that he was “hereby reversing the concessions that Crooked Joe Biden gave to Nicolás Maduro under a 2022 oil transaction agreement.”
The move, which takes effect on March 1, is expected to disrupt Venezuela’s economy and further tighten global oil markets already under pressure due to a sharp decline in Mexican crude exports and looming tariffs on its largest source of imported crude from Canada. Venezuela is also a member of OPEC.
All three countries provide a heavier barrel favoured by US Gulf Coast refiners. Despite a 10% tariff, it will be extremely difficult if not impossible for American processors to swap out supplies from Canada from either Mexico or Venezuela.
The Venezuelan licence had allowed Chevron to run joint ventures with Venezuela’s state-run oil company, PDVSA, providing one of the few remaining sources of US dollars to the Maduro government despite broader sanctions.
Trump justified the revocation by citing Maduro's failure to meet “electoral conditions” and its alleged slow pace in accepting deported Venezuelan migrants, including individuals he described as “violent criminals.” Continue…
