Rubio outlines Trump’s stance on Canada as 51st state

https://www.rt.com/news/613157-rubio-explains-trumps-stance-on-canada/

Washington is ready to continue working with Ottawa but “there has to be reciprocity” in trade, the US secretary of state has said

US President Donald Trump's offer to absorb Canada came “logically” after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau allegedly said his country would cease to exist if Washington imposed higher import tariffs, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed.

In an interview with Canadian-American journalist Catherine Herridge published on Thursday, Rubio recalled a conversation between Trump and Trudeau, in which the latter allegedly suggested that Canada would be unable to cope with increased tariffs.

“Trudeau says, ‘if you impose [new tariffs], if you even out our trade relationship, then we will cease to exist as a country.’ At which point the president responded very logically, and that is ‘if you can't exist without cheating and trade, then you should become a [US] state’,” Rubio said. Canada can keep anthem – Trump

https://www.rt.com/news/613144-canada-can-keep-anthem-trump/

The US President has once again suggested that America’s northern neighbor will “have to become the 51st state”

US President Donald Trump has joked that Canada can keep its national anthem when it joins the United States. The comment came at the Republican Governors Association meeting in Washington, DC on Thursday.

Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of absorbing Canada, citing its dependence on the US.

”We’ll have to work out some deal … because I do like the ‘O Canada’ all right,” Trump said, referring to the anthem. “It’s a beautiful thing. I think we’re going to have to keep it for the 51st state.”

Ottawa has consistently dismissed the idea of the country being absorbed into the US, with outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau describing Trump’s idea as a “non-starter.”

Trump made the joke while referring to the trade dispute between the two countries. Continue…

Elon Musk says ‘Reuters is lying’

https://www.rt.com/news/613164-elon-musk-lying-reuters/

The billionaire has denied the agency’s report on plans to cut Ukraine off Starlink to pressure it into the rare earths deal

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has accused Reuters of “lying” as he denied the agency’s report on plans to threaten Ukraine with cutting it off Starlink internet access to gain leverage in the ongoing bargaining about natural resources.

The agency reported on the matter on Saturday, citing three US officials familiar with the plans. According to Reuters, the Ukrainians were threatened with an “imminent shutoff” of Musk’s Starlink satellite service during a meeting between Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and Trump’s envoy, Keith Kellogg, in Kiev this week, should they not sign the deal on rare earths with Washington.

Musk took to his social media platform X later in the day, denying the existence of such plans and accusing Reuters of “lying.”

“This is false. Reuters is lying. They are second only to AP (Associated Propaganda) as legacy news liars,” the billionaire wrote.

SpaceX has provided the Ukrainian military with Starlink internet since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022, delivering more than 40,000 terminals over the course of the hostilities. The terminals have promptly become a key command and control tool for Kiev’s military. The deal

Musk’s systems have also seen direct combat use, with satellite terminals repeatedly seen rigged to aerial and sea drones used by the Ukrainian military to provide them with a reliable and hard-to-jam control access.

SpaceX reportedly secured a new Pentagon contract to expand Ukraine’s access to the Starlink satellite network late last year. According to a Bloomberg report, a total of 3,000 Starlink terminals in Ukraine were granted access to Starshield, a more secure and militarized version of the system, under the deal.

Poilievre calls Parliamentary Press Gallery ‘undemocratic’

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/poilievre-calls-parliamentary-press-gallery-undemocratic/62273

Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre has criticized the Parliamentary Press Gallery as "highly undemocratic," claiming it is dominated by media outlets that receive federal subsidies.

Blacklock's Reporter says his comments come after a 2019 court ruling that found the Gallery and House of Commons administration had unfairly blacklisted two news organizations using secretive accreditation guidelines.

“Independent media should be allowed on the precinct,” Poilievre said in an interview with Juno News. “There is no reason why it should be a small cabal of government-approved mouthpieces. It is highly undemocratic.”

Poilievre argued that the current system limits diverse viewpoints. “When I hold a press conference, it’s just Liberal media who are there to attend,” he said.

“I would love to see a scenario where every different kind of journalist from all backgrounds, of all opinions, is given a chance to report on what happens on the Hill.”

His remarks followed the 2019 decision to deny accreditation to Rebel News Network and the True North Centre for Public Policy at that year’s televised leaders' debates. Federal Court Justice Russel Zinn overturned the ban, calling it “troubling,” “procedurally unfair,” and lacking “discernible rationality and logic.”

In an affidavit, Rebel News alleged that the Gallery’s governance raised serious conflicts of interest. “The government-influenced Canadian Parliamentary Press Gallery governing access to official Ottawa media availabilities has outright banned Rebel News,” it stated.

Gallery accreditation decisions are made behind closed doors by an executive committee, where a majority of members currently represent CBC and Canadian Press. Of the 46 media companies accredited, 39 receive federal grants and subsidies.

Blacklock’s Reporter is the only accredited independent news agency that neither accepts nor solicits federal funding.

The Western Standard also doesn't accept any media bailout cash.

In 2021, the Gallery passed a motion requiring new members to disclose financial conflicts of interest and “any form of sponsorship.”

However, it rejected a Blacklock’s request that existing members be held to the same standard. The outlet was later banned from the National Press Building, a decision that is now the subject of an Ontario Superior Court case.

Survey finds majority of Canadians support deeper immigration cuts

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/survey-finds-majority-of-canadians-support-deeper-immigration-cuts/62362

A federal survey has revealed that a 16% reduction in Canada’s immigration quota this year did not go far enough, with many Canadians calling for even deeper cuts.

Blacklock's Reporter says the research, conducted by the Department of Immigration, found widespread concern over record-high immigration levels.

According to the report, 54% of Canadians believe too many immigrants are coming to the country. The strongest support for further reductions came from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

The survey also found that the recent cuts outlined in the Immigration Levels Plan failed to meet public expectations.

Last October, the federal government announced plans to lower the number of annual landed immigrants from 471,800 to 395,000 in 2025.

However, according to the 2025 Online Tracking Survey, 52% of respondents still felt that number was too high. Even when informed that 395,000 represented a 20% drop from previous targets, 44% of respondents maintained that the figure remained excessive.

When asked why they felt this way, 40% cited housing concerns, 25% worried about unemployment, and 22% believed Canada should prioritize its own citizens. Another 9% mentioned concerns over insufficient social or cultural integration.

Regional breakdowns showed that 61% of Albertans felt immigration levels were too high, followed by 59% in Saskatchewan, 58% in Ontario, and 56% in British Columbia. Other provinces also reflected similar sentiments, with lower percentages recorded in Québec (44%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (39%). Continue…
