The real reason US strongman Donald Trump wants to annex the Great White North may be far more elemental, and essential: Water. And Canada has about a fifth of the fresh water on the planet.

The issue has become top of mind because a 60-year old treaty governing water sharing in the Columbia River basin has quietly come up for renewal even as the US strongman threatens punishing tariffs on Canada. Ottawa tried to renegotiate the document, first ratified in 1964, in December hoping to get it signed and sealed before Trump was re-elected.

Now it’s too late, especially after the fires in LA.

“You have millions of gallons of water pouring down from the north with the snow caps in Canada, and all pouring down and they have essentially a very large faucet,” Trump said during the election campaign in September, referring to the Columbia River.

“You turn the faucet and it takes one day to turn it, and it’s massive, it’s as big as the wall of that building right there behind you. You turn that, and all of that water aimlessly goes into the Pacific, and if they turned it back, all of that water would come right down here and right into Los Angeles.”

For students of Canadian history, the Columbia River’s headwaters originate near Cranbook on the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains. David Thompson crossed Athabasca Pass in the winter of 1811 — another period of conflict with the Americans — ultimately opening a 2,000 kilometre trade route to the Pacific Ocean.

Today 470 dams provide about 40% of the US’ hydroelectric power — and half of British Columbia’s — according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). In dry years, BC is obligated to release water from its own reservoirs to maintain river levels as it crosses into Oregon and Washington state.

"The DSR and option grants total 537,258 shares. Carney purchased a further 1,878 DSRs under an employee purchase plan for a total holding of 539,136 shares. There is no price provided for the 1,878 DSRs he purchased, so I assumed the closing price on the date of purchase."

"The weighted average exercise price on the aggregate DSRs and options is approximately $47.55 per share," said the executive.

"The number is approximate because the grants are recorded in $US and I’ve converted them to $CDN based on FX conversions on the day before the grants were made. Brookfield stock closed on Feb. 19, 2024 at $86.26 per share, so Carney’s holdings are in-the-money to the tune of $20,869,325."

While Carney worked at Brookfield — first as vice chair and head of ESG and impact fund investing starting in August 2020, and later as chair from August 2022 until January, 2025.

During a February 20 press conference, Liberal Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge proposed nearly doubling the CBC’s per citizen funding in addition to installing government funding of the outlet as a permanent part of the Canadian budget.

“CBC/Radio-Canada is more than a broadcaster — it is a pillar of our cultural identity and a cornerstone of our sovereignty,” she said. “Now more than ever, it is a national security issue.”

The proposed payouts would increase payments to the CBC from $33 to $62 per person, meaning that each Canadian would be paying $62 to fund the CBC regardless of if they read or watch the outlet’s content.

“The CBC is a pillar of our democracy, and we need a strong public broadcaster to ensure Canadians have access to reliable news and Canadian stories,” St-Onge argued.

“And I don’t think the United States should be our reference in terms of how you should support a public broadcaster,” she continued, warning that defunding the national “treasure” would be to the benefit of American social media “billionaires.”

Notably, the proposed funding increase is being pushed just months before Canadians hope to be on their way to the polls to elect a new prime minister, leading some to speculate that it is an attempt to encourage the CBC to report favorably on the Liberal Party.

The increased government subsidies also come after an October report found that the CBC’s advertising revenue dropped nearly 10 percent last year.

Furthermore, the CBC’s own quarterly report found that its network audience share is only 1.7% of the population.

Photo of CAF member wearing keffiyeh sparks anger, questions about scarf’s history

A Canadian military organization shared a photo last week of a CAF member in full uniform wearing a Palestinian-style keffiyeh, a clothing item frequently used today by activists to show solidarity with anti-Israel terrorist groups such as the PLO and Hamas.

The Canadian Joint Operations Command shared the photo to promote “World Radio Day” as the fully uniformed individual kneels over a map with a radio and a rifle underarm. Notably, the servicemember is not in a desert setting – where historically keffiyeh’s or shemaghs, as they are alternatively known, have been worn by non-Arab soldiers to protect their faces from sand.

The scarf around his neck appears to be a keffiyeh. This traditional Middle Eastern headscarf has been used as a symbol of armed resistance against Israel since the Arab revolt in the English territory of Palestine in 1936 during the period known as the “Arab Revolt.”

The two main demands of the armed uprising were an end to Jewish immigration and an end to the British occupation of the region. The rebels’ leadership ordered every man to wear the keffiyeh to show solidarity and give cover to the fighters who wore them so the British wouldn’t be able to distinguish combatants from civilians.

Later, the headscarf became repopularized by the former leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization, a listed terrorist entity in Canada, Yasser Arafat. Arafat famously shaped the keffiyeh into a map of Palestine, which included Israel. It’s used today by anti-Israel protesters to show solidarity with the people of Palestine against Israelis. It has also been worn by anti-Israel terrorists in the killing of Israeli citizens.

“The clothing article in question, and as appearing within said photo, is a remnant of Afghanistan-era garb as worn by many soldiers during and since that mission, particularly during training events and exercises,” Cheryl Forrest a representative for the Department of National Defence told True North. “Members have certain discretion to wear preferred articles of clothing to guard against the elements, notably during training activities, provided these items comply with dress standards.”

A look at the Facebook post by the CJOC shows viewers of the post engaging in it as if it were a political statement. One user said, “Free Palestine,” and used a Palestinian flag emoji. Another man took the opposite stance, saying “ “Why is a Canadian Soldier wearing a symbol of a terror group? I’m shocked.”

Craig Hood, a 33-year CAF veteran and former executive director for the Nova Scotia Legion, told True North that the post was likely not a political statement but advised the DND to stop the practice of wearing “such items.” Continue…
