Safetyism Kills

The term “safetyism” became popularized in The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. It refers to the way modern society is overprotective and overbearing, the ultimate helicopter state, which has led to excessive and even destructive regulations that don’t actually keep you safe, and which in fact may endanger you.

Watching the meetings and town halls in Los Angeles featuring the nitwits in charge getting yelled at by enraged homeowners as the city burned was enlightening. Again and again, the ridiculous Mayor Karen Bass, an openly communist revolutionary, brought up a persistent theme: the cult of safety.

Nonprofit was allegedly used in the Feeding Our Future scheme after being acquired from Minneapolis City Council Member Jamal Osman.

‘Inflated, fraudulent, unbelievable’: Nonprofit created by Minneapolis City Council member examined at fraud trial. That nonprofit, Stigma Free International, was formed by Jamal Osman and three others in August 2019 and essentially did nothing for the first year of its existence, U.S. Postal Inspector John Western told the jury.

It had no employees and its bank account, controlled by Osman, “sat there with an initial balance,” Western explained. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson displayed account records showing the only activity on the account was a $5 “analysis service charge” for months in a row. The organization “appeared to operate as a shell company,” Western said.

But in January 2021, $1.5 million that “came from Feeding Our Future checks” was deposited into the account, Western said. Those checks were signed by Bock.

Just a few months earlier, in October 2020, Osman handed over control of his organization to a new group of owners who are accused of using it to defraud the federal child nutrition programs, according to Western’s testimony.

A second ethics complaint was filed against Sen. Nicole Mitchell, DFL-Woodbury, on Tuesday after she voted on a motion related to her own potential expulsion from the Minnesota Senate.

“Since her arrest last April, Senate Republicans have been clear: Sen. Mitchell’s actions have damaged the integrity of the Senate and distracted from the important work we need to do. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats have shielded Sen. Mitchell from serious consequences to advance their agenda, avoid bipartisanship, and even allowed the Senate to become complicit in a legal strategy that delays both justice for the victim and holds the Senator accountable for her actions,” said Senate Republican Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks.

During a press conference, Johnson explained that Senate rules outline how to handle conflicts of interest and that Mitchell should have abstained from a procedural vote related to a motion to expel her from the Senate last month.

“Any vote to expel her from the Senate would result in the loss of her employment as a Senator and would immediately end access to the salary and benefits afforded to a legislator,” said Sen. Steve Drazkowski, R-Mazeppa. “Members are expected to abstain from votes for which they have a financial interest. Senator Mitchell did not disclose her conflict and did not abstain from a procedural vote that stood in the way of a vote on her expulsion.”

Flanagan now quiet on Peltier release from prison as she explores U.S. Senate run.

Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan praised President Joe Biden last month for "this final act of compassion" in commuting the sentence of a man convicted of murdering two FBI agents.

Just one month ago, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan was one of the most outspoken elected officials in Minnesota in her praise of President Joe Biden’s 11th-hour decision to commute the prison sentence of Leonard Peltier.

But when Peltier was released from prison in Florida on Tuesday and returned to his home in Belcourt, N.D., Flanagan was silent.

Alpha News reached out to the lieutenant governor requesting comment on Peltier’s release from prison but received no response. Flanagan’s silence over Peltier’s release from prison comes just days after she announced she is planning a run for U.S. Senate.

One politician who took time to celebrate Peltier’s release is Sen. Tina Smith, who announced last week she won’t seek re-election in 2026.

$2 billion in ‘gold bars’ sent from EPA to Abrams-linked climate organization.

A group linked to former Democratic Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams received a $2 billion grant from the Environmental Protection Agency as part of the $20 billion "gold bar scheme" alleged by the Department of Government Efficiency.

The $20 billion in grants doled out by the Biden administration with funds from the Inflation Reduction Act were found "parked" in an outside financial institution in a bid to give the grant money out without oversight, according to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin.

The commanding officer of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that slammed into a ship near Egypt last week was yanked from the position “due to a loss of confidence in his ability,” the Navy said Thursday.

Capt. Dave Snowdenwas “relieved” of his job at the helm of the USS Harry S. Truman and temporarily reassigned following the wild crash in the Mediterranean Sea on Feb. 12, according to the military branch.

“The U.S. Navy holds commanding officers to the highest standard and takes action to hold them accountable when those standards are not met,” the Navy said in a statement.

Potential Mitch McConnell successors begin lining up for Kentucky's Senate race.

Sen. Mitch McConnell’s decision not to run for re-election in Kentucky next year opens up his Senate seat for the first time since 1984 — and it is already drawing interest from heavy hitters looking to fill the seat.

Former state Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who served as a McConnell aide before launching his own career in elected office, including a run for governor in 2023, announced his Senate candidacy less than an hour after the news about McConnell's retirement broke.

Hegseth orders $50 billion of defense budget redirected from Biden to Trump priorities.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the Pentagon to cut 8% of next year's defense budget – around $50 billion – from "low-impact and low-priority" Biden-era programs to redirect the funds towards President Donald Trump’s "America First priorities."

The military will put together a list of programs that could be axed to fund Trump's plans, including "so-called 'climate change' and other woke programs, as well as excessive bureaucracy," according to a statement from acting Deputy Defense Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses on Wednesday night.

‘You screwed people’: Inside the National Science Foundation’s firing of 168 workers.

The agency didn't have to fire its experts but decided to in the interest of fairness, a top NSF official told staffers in an emotionally charged hybrid meeting Tuesday morning at its Alexandria, Virginia, headquarters.

"The removal of experts was completely at the agency's discretion. Because if we're asked to remove probationers, then we also need to remove at-will employees," Micah Cheatham, NSF's chief management officer, said at the meeting, according to a transcript obtained by POLITICO's E&E News.

"This is the first of many forthcoming workforce reductions," he added.

NSF was created by Congress in 1950 to ensure U.S. leadership in science and engineering. The agency now provides roughly a quarter of federal support to America's colleges and universities for basic research.

Republicans Who Voted Against Confirming Kash Patel as FBI Director.

The Senate narrowly voted to confirm Patel 51-49, with two Republicans voting against the former federal prosecutor's confirmation:

Senator Susan Collins of Maine.

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Patel, who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in January, was widely considered one of Trump's most vulnerable nominees, facing questions about his previous criticism of the FBI's Russia investigation and pledges to fire top agency personnel who investigated Trump during his first term and after.
