The Bellamy salute was introduced in the United States in 1892 as part of the Pledge of Allegiance, created by Francis Bellamy to promote patriotism during the Columbus Quincentenary. It was a distinctly American gesture, inspired by late 19th-century ideals of republican virtue and classical Roman imagery (via neoclassical art and literature). It remained confined to the U.S. until it was replaced in 1942 due to its resemblance to Nazi symbolism.
