Pro-Israel Bias in UK Newsrooms Revealed
Journalists from five British media outlets speaking anonymously tell Hamza Yusuf about the way their own organisations cover Israel-Palestine.
Journalists working at Britain’s most prestigious newspapers and TV channels have expressed concern at pro-Israel bias inside their organisations. Speaking exclusively to Declassified, half a dozen current and former staff at the BBC, Sky, ITN, the Guardian and The Times have disclosed the extent of anti-Palestinian prejudice in their newsrooms.
All of the journalists requested anonymity for fear of professional reprisals. Despite working for a range of outlets from across the political spectrum, they painted a consistent picture of the obstacles faced by reporters who want to humanise Palestinians or scrutinise Israeli government narratives.
A reporter from the right-wing Times newspaper said: “I literally cried in the bathroom so many times because of the uphill battle of trying to get things reported.” Disgruntled staff at the liberal Guardian have compiled an “exhaustive spreadsheet” with a “mountain of examples” of the paper “amplifying unchallenged Israeli propaganda … or treating clearly false statements by Israeli spokespeople as credible.”
Journalists working in TV studios face a similar struggle, with swift repercussions if guests from the Israeli government are asked difficult questions on air. Declassified was told: “The Israeli narrative always reigned supreme and instructed the coverage at Sky News, no matter how inaccurate.”
At the BBC, when it comes to reporting accurately on the nature of Israeli conduct in Gaza, a journalist said:
“the use of the word genocide is effectively banned, and any contributor who uses this word is immediately shut down.”
At ITN, which produces news programmes for three British TV channels, the focus is on “clicks not ethical clarity,” a member of staff lamented. “Tragic footage [from Gaza] is often met with … remarks about how much traffic it will generate, as if it’s not real lives being impacted.”
Sky’s ‘Skewed’ News
Across all the mainstream media outlets where Declassified gained access to insiders, a recurring theme was the challenge of reporting on Israel’s war crimes, despite them being caught on camera.
One journalist at Sky News suggested there are a whole set of unwritten journalistic rules that apply exclusively to Israel. “It’s a continuous battle to report the truth,” the journalist said.
“We would see the raw footage being sent to us from Gaza — we’re all well aware of the carnage. Yet you can’t describe what your eyes are seeing.
I remember when [Israel’s then Defence Minister] Yoav Gallant announced the ‘complete siege’ immediately after Oct. 7. It was a blockade on top of an already crippling blockade. It was a violation of international law that was going to have catastrophic consequences, and yet this wasn’t allowed to be conveyed in the coverage.”

A senior army officer who dismissed sex abuse complaints as alcohol-related was appointed to lead SAS “reforms” ahead of the Brereton war crimes report.
The Albanese government’s appointment of recently retired Defence Chief General Angus Campbell as Ambassador to Belgium, NATO and the European Union has reignited a long-running sex abuse scandal in the infantry battalion, which was commanded by Campbell in East Timor at the turn of the century.
The controversy highlights deep-rooted cultural and institutional problems among the defence force’s most senior generals, their failures to deal with sexual and other serious abuse, and what former soldiers call “gross hypocrisy at the highest command levels” throughout the Afghanistan war crimes saga.
Adding fuel to the controversy is how a decorated senior army officer who dismissed complaints about sex abuse by a Sergeant – the Sergeant was later convicted of multiple rapes and sexual assaults – was appointed to lead in-house Defence “reforms” of the SAS ahead of Major General Paul Brereton’s landmark 2020 report on alleged war crimes in Afghanistan.
The officer now acknowledges his initial conclusions that the complaints were alcohol-related rather than sexual in nature proved to be incorrect once the facts became known.
Three decades after the abuse occurred in the Townsville-based 2nd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (2 RAR), a group of survivors and family members profoundly affected by ongoing trauma are now calling for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to launch an independent investigation into more evidence of sexual abuse involving the same former Sergeant.
They also want the probe to examine “potential cover-ups” by officers up the chain of command. The group has given MWM credible accounts of an additional alleged rape and at least two additional alleged sexual assaults that occurred in the battalion during the mid-1990s and says there are “likely” to have been more.

Peter Dutton has vowed to 'do whatever it takes' to kick out migrants who spread hatred in Australia if he is elected Prime Minister.
The opposition leader floated the idea of a constitutional referendum in order to achieve his goals while speaking at The Advertiser's Future SA forum on Friday.
His comments were sparked by a vile video uploaded by Israeli influencer Max Veifer which caught two Bankstown nurses stating they would kill patients from his country.
One of the nurses in question, Ahmed 'Rashid' Nadir, had been granted Australian citizenship four years ago and Mr Dutton previously said he wants to rescind that honour.
Mr Dutton said any migrants either with or without a citizenship should be expelled if they were to engage in anti-Semitic attacks or if they were to 'hate our country'.
Both Mr Nadir and the other nurse, Sarah Abu Lebdeh, have apologised for their outburst which involved them making throat-slashing gestures towards Mr Veifer.
The pair have insisted they were joking and taken out of context in the confronting video.
Mr Dutton highlighted the fact that despite Mr Nadir's actions it is currently impossible to expel him after he gained Australian citizenship after fleeing from Afghanistan.

Report: Pentagon Preparing to Fire More than 5K Civilian Employees
The Pentagon is preparing to fire more than 5,000 probationary workers from the Department of Defense’s (DoD) civilian department, according to several reports.
Jeff Seldin, a national security correspondent with Voice of America News, shared a press release from Darin Selnick, the acting undersecretary of defense, on X, in which it was revealed that the DoD was “re-evaluating” its “probationary workforce,” and was anticipating “reducing the Department’s civilian workforce by” five to eight percent, and that 5,400 probationary workers were expected to be let go.
“As the Secretary announced yesterday, the Department of Defense is re-evaluating our probationary workforce, consistent with the President’s initiative to reform the Federal workforce to maximize efficiency and productivity,” Selnick said. “This re-evaluation of probationary employees is being done across government, not just at the Defense Department, but we believe in the goals of the program, and our leaders carrying out that review carefully and smartly.”
“We anticipate reducing the Department’s civilian workforce by 5-8% to produce efficiencies and refocus the Department on the President’s priorities and restoring readiness in the force,” Selnick’s statement said. “We expect approximately 5,400 probationary workers will be released beginning next week as part of this initial effort, after which we will implement a hiring freeze while we conduct a further analysis of our personnel needs, complying as always with all applicable laws.”

French far-right leader cancels speech after Bannon gives ‘Nazi salute’
National Harbor, Maryland: A French far-right leader cancelled his appearance at a major conservative gathering near Washington after former Donald Trump aide Steve Bannon made an on-stage gesture which resembled a Nazi salute.
Jordan Bardella, the 29-year-old leader of National Rally, which is headed in parliament by Marine Le Pen, was due to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday (US Eastern Standard Time).
French media led by Agence France-Presse reported Bardella withdrew from the program because of Bannon’s “gesture alluding to Nazi ideology” at the end of his speech on Thursday evening, local time. Bardella was not in the room when the gesture was made, his statement said.
Bannon denied it was a Nazi salute, saying he had made the “wave” at the end of numerous prior speeches as a way of thanking the audience.
It follows tech billionaire Elon Musk drawing condemnation for a similar salute at a rally accompanying Trump’s inauguration in January. Musk made light of the incident at the time, saying, “The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired”, while some of his supporters suggested it was actually a Roman salute.
At the CPAC conference on Friday, Bannon responded to Bardella’s withdrawal by calling the French politician “a boy not a man” who was not worthy of leading France.
“He’s too big of a p—y to govern France.”
“He’s not a man, he’s a boy toy, if he’s going to have the mainstream media say something like that and he’s going to wet himself,” Bannon told this masthead.
“That’s the exact same wave I gave seven years ago when I went to France for National Front [now National Rally] and gave a motivational speech for about an hour.
“[Bardella] has been nothing but a spokesmodel since he took over, and if Le Pen thinks they’re going to have a shot to win and to beat Macron and the rest of this group of gangsters in France, he’s got another thing coming.”

The conference, billed as the largest conservative gathering in the world, heard from Vice President J. D. Vance on Thursday and is due to be attended by President Donald Trump on Saturday (Sunday AEDT).
A multitude of cabinet members, prominent Republicans and senior White House officials have also appeared, including Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, Attorney-General Pam Bondi, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz.
Far-right and alternative media figures also figure heavily on the program, such as My Pillow founder and conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell, YouTuber Benny Johnson and political activist Jack Posobiec.
Bannon, an influential figure in Trump’s first term, spent four months in jail last year for defying a subpoena from a congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol.
