Henry Lee III was an American cavalry officer during the American Revolution and later served as the ninth Governor of Virginia and a Representative to the United States Congress. He was renowned for his horsemanship and his leadership of Lee's Legion, a mixed corps of cavalry and infantry. Lee earned the only gold medal for an officer under the rank of general for his surprise maneuvering at Paulus Hook, New Jersey. He was the father of Confederate general Robert E. Lee
