Because it was their first takeover to enable them to ship nationwide in a time when people lived great distances.
Remember all those pics of Postman carrying a child someone was mailing to a 'relative'? They want you to believe that they were going to grandmas. But were they really?
Probably just another trafficking scheme. And if they charged the rest of the public to pay for the service they could get their goodies for free.
Same with rails, shipping, air transport. It was never about making our lives easier.
It was about their supplies and their demand.
