‘Terrorist attack’ at Russian consulate: As it happened

Police, firefighters and bomb squads are working at the site of an explosion at Moscow’s diplomatic mission in Marseille

An explosion occurred at the Russian Consulate General in the French city of Marseille on Monday. Police and firefighters are currently working on the scene to determine the circumstances of the blast. Officials have said that no people were harmed in the incident.

While the investigation is ongoing, Moscow has suggested that the blastmay have been the result of a terrorist plot. Last week, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Agency (SVR) warned that the country’s diplomatic missions in Europe could become the targets of Ukrainian attacksas Kiev tries to derail Russia-US talks to avoid having to make “excessive concessions” in a peace settlement with Moscow.

This live stream has ended.

12:53 GMT

Police and firefighters have wrapped up work near the Russian consulate in Marseille, RIA has reported, citing the consul general of Sao Tome and Principe, whose diplomatic mission is located on the other side of the street.

Jean-Pierre Bensaid told the outlet that there are still several police officers and journalists at the scene but that the bomb squads and firefighters have already left and the street is now cleared.

12:13 GMT

The Marseille prosecutor’s office has announced that it has launched an investigation into the attack on the Russian consulate, Le Parisien newspaper has reported.

The case has been assigned to the department of organized and specialized crimes, the outlet said, with reference to the article for “damage caused by explosive or incendiary substances.”

The report said law enforcement agencies are currently examining the city’s surveillance camera footage in hopes of identifying the attackers.

11:17 GMT

France’s anti-Russian rhetoric contributed to the attack on Moscow’s consulate in Marseille, Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador at Large Rodion Miroshnik has said.

The official, who heads the Foreign Ministry’s mission monitoring allegations of Ukrainian war crimes, stated that Monday’s incident has “all the signs of a terrorist act.”

“It seems that the hostile rhetoric of the French leadership is not just hot air, but also contributes to terrorist acts on French territory,” Miroshnik wrote on Telegram.

11:08 GMT

The La Provence newspaper has reported that the bomb squads deployed to the Russian consulate in Marseille have conducted a controlled detonation on site, presumably of an unexploded device that was hurled onto the territory of the consulate earlier in the day.

The outlet noted that law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel arestill working at the scene and are using equipment designed to “detect and identify nuclear, radiological, biological, chemical and explosive substances.”

China’s Xi backs Russia on Ukraine peace efforts – Kremlin

Moscow-Beijing “foreign policy tandem serves as a factor of stabilization in world affairs,” the statement reads

Russian President Vladimir Putin has told his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, about Moscow’s latest contacts with Washington, the Kremlin reported on Monday. Beijing has expressed support for the renewed dialogue and new potential for resolving the Ukraine crisis, the statement said.

Putin and Xi spoke on the phone to “share opinions on issues of immediate interest” for bilateral cooperation and the global agenda, describing the exchange as “warm and friendly.”

“The leaders have stressed that the Russian-Chinese foreign policy tandem serves as a factor of stabilization in world affairs. Its strategic nature is not affected by external influence and does not pose a threat to any third party,” the statement said.

The Chinese description of the phone call said it was requested by Moscow, adding that during the talk, Xi expressed approval of the fact that “Russia and relevant parties have made positive efforts to resolve the crisis.”

US President Donald Trump has reversed attempts to “isolate” Russia which were pursued by the previous administration. Now Moscow and Washington are working to restore normal diplomatic relations. Senior officials from both countries have said that this could lead to a resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

Members of the new US government had previously criticized President Joe Biden’s approach, arguing that it pushed Moscow into a position of a “junior partner” with Beijing, harming US interests.

Conversely, Russia and China have described their relationship as a “no-limits partnership”based on mutual respect and shared views on how the world should be governed. Moscow and Beijing have criticized the US for allegedly fueling chaos around the world in an attempt to undermine competition.

Zelensky must negotiate – Pentagon chief

Repayment to the US through minerals is crucial for Ukraine’s future, Pete Hegseth has said

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky should follow Russia’s example, which has made “great progress” in negotiations with the US, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said. Washington is pressuring Kiev to finalize a minerals deal as a means of repaying for previous military assistance*

Last year, Zelensky proposed granting the US privileged access to Ukrainian natural resources as part of his ‘victory plan’. However, he has refused to sign an initial proposal from the administration of Donald Trump,an act the US president has denounced as a breach of trust. In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Hegseth contrasted the situation with Russia’s diplomatic engagements with Washington in recent weeks.

”Zelensky should come to the table because this economic partnership is an important thing for the future of his country, and we hope that he will very soon,” he said.

Washington and Moscow are seeking to escape the impasse that defined their relationship during Joe Biden’s presidency, and have expressed optimism that this could lead to a swift resolution of the Ukraine conflict. Zelensky has criticized Trump’s approach toward Russia, insisting that no negotiations regarding Ukraine occur without Kiev’s involvement.

Officials in the Trump administration haveshifted away from labeling Moscow’s actions in the Ukraine conflict as “unprovoked aggression,”acknowledging instead that NATO’s expansion in Europe was viewed as provocative by Russia. Hegseth argued that this change serves the ultimate goal of achieving peace.

”Standing here and saying: ‘you’re good, you’re bad, you're a dictator, you’re not a dictator, you invaded, you didn’t’ –it’s not useful, it’s not productive,” he explained.

Trump has labeled Zelensky a “dictator without elections,” citing his suspension of elections under martial law and his refusal to transfer presidential powers to the parliamentary speaker after the expiration of his term last year. Zelensky maintains that his landslide victory in 2019 legitimizes his rule. Moscow has expressed hesitance about signing any peace agreement with Zelensky, arguing that his questionable legitimacy could undermine the legal standing of such a treaty.

During a press conference on Sunday, Zelensky asserted he would not sign a minerals deal with the US that would obligate “ten generations of Ukrainians to pay.” (Zelensky obligated his people not the US).

He also proposed resigning in exchange for Ukraine’s immediate accession to NATO – a prospect several members of the US-led military bloc have dismissed.Failing that, Zelensky aims to establish a “NATO within Ukraine,” envisioning an army of at least 800,000 troops which he claims Western donors should fund.(dream on dictator, giving this Nazi run country any more money or power, is begging for WWIII)

Trump reveals how he wants to be remembered

The US president says he would prefer to leave a legacy as a “peacemaker,” rather than a “conqueror”

US President Donald Trump has said he wants to be remembered by history as a “peacemaker,” and reiterated his commitment to ending military conflicts, particularly the Ukraine crisis.

He made the remarks to a large crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday, which had gathered to commemorate his first month in office. Trump has repeatedly expressed his intent to swiftly end the Ukraine conflict, arguing that he has “the power to end this war” in order “to save lives.”

“It’s my hope that my greatest legacy will be as a peacemaker, not a conqueror, I don’t want to be a conqueror,” the US president told the gathering.

The statement echoed his inaugural speech, when Trump said he wanted to be remembered as a “peacemaker and unifier,” adding that a nation’s strength should be measured by the wars it ends or prevents rather than those it wins. (This statement will be in history books)

The remark was an apparent reference to his predecessor Joe Biden, who spent billions to arm Kiev and massively ramped up weapons supplies to Ukraine in the final weeks of his tenure.

Trump has repeatedly blamed Biden for the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, claiming that the war would never have erupted if he had remained in office. According to Trump, his predecessor’s statements about Kiev potentially joining NATO were a critical provocation that had directly contributed to the conflict.

Speaking at CPAC, Trump also said he believed “we are pretty close” to a deal on Ukraine. The remarks come amid an intensified US-Russia dialogue focused on peace efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

Also on Saturday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the Trump administration is focused on continuing talks with both sides and is optimistic that a peace deal could be reached “this week.”

The development follows high-level talks between US and Russian diplomats that took place in Saudi Arabia last week. The meeting, which marked the first direct attempt by the two parties to normalize relations after nearly three years of animosity under the Biden administration, focused on restoring bilateral ties and the settlement of the Ukraine conflict. The negotiations notably excluded Ukrainian and EU representatives.

Both Moscow and Washington have praised the talks in Riyadh, an initiative of the Russian and US presidents, as highly productive.

US adopting ‘Russian narrative’ - EU’s Kallas

The bloc’s foreign policy chief plans to “support Ukraine right now more than ever” while Moscow and Washington negotiate

Washington has fallen for “Russia’s narrative,” EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Monday. The accusation comes amid recent efforts by Washington and Moscow to begin resolving the conflict.

“If [we] look at the messages that come from the US, then it is clear that the Russian narrative is there, very strongly represented,”Kallas told journalists in Brussels, stressing that the bloc is planning to “support Ukraine right now more than ever.” (Only a highly conflicted and compromised person would come to that conclusion. Insinuating Trump is compromised by Russia is weak and abjectly stupid)

Kallas took office in Brussels as the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, replacing Spain’s Josep Borrell in December last year.

A pronounced foreign policy hawk who, while she was Estonian prime minister demanded in 2023 that “all business with Russia must stop,”Kallas faced resignation calls over revelations her husband held a 25% stake in a (Russian) logistics company that provides services in the sanction-hit nation.

Since the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022, both the EU and the US have implemented multiple rounds of sanctions in an effort to isolate Russia. The penalties included disconnecting the country from the Western financial system, suspending nearly all trade and energy ties, and freezing Moscow’s foreign reserves—a measure condemned as “theft” by the Kremlin.

On Monday, the EU adopted its 16th package of Ukraine-related restrictions, marking the anniversary of the launch of the Russian military operation against Kiev’s forces in February 2022.

However, shortly after assuming office in January US President Donald Trump pivoted Washington’s stance on Ukraine. Trump recently claimed that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is responsible for the conflict’s escalation, and said that his presence at Washington’s meetings with Russia is unnecessary.

Meanwhile, media reports emerged that US envoys to theG7 and the UN have pushed for more cautious language in official statements, suggesting the use of “Ukraine conflict” instead of “Russia’s war of aggression.”

The first meeting of Russian and US officials in three years occurred last week in the Saudi capital of Riyadh. The talks have ignited a backlash within the EU with member states accusing the White House of reopening dialogue with Kremlin without prior consultation and sidelining Brussels from the negotiations.

(They have to keep their lies going, so of course they go back to the worn out manual of “How to take Trump Down”.)

EU’s chief diplomat backs Zelensky’s refusal to hold elections

Although the Ukrainian leader’s term ended last May, Kaja Kallas says there is “no need” for a vote while the conflict continues

TheEU's top diplomatKaja Kallas has announced that she supports Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s refusal to hold a presidential election.

Although Zelensky’s five-year presidential term expired in May 2024, no new elections have been held, with Zelensky claiming that it is “not the right time,” and citing martial law. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that he no longer considers Zelensky a legitimate head of state.

Speaking on Monday ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels,Kallas said that “there is no need to hold elections” during wartime.(That’s how EU tells you they are all support dictators and are dictators. Where did she learn diplomacy?)

She noted the public feud last week when the US president claimed that Zelensky is “a dictator without elections” and accused him of funneling US aid into a “war that couldn’t be won.” Trump also claimed last week that Zelensky’s approval rating was at 4% and suggested that an election should be called.

“He refuses to have elections. He’s low in the real Ukrainian polls. How can you be high with every city being demolished?” Trump said, adding that in the meantime, the US is “successfully negotiating an end to the war with Russia.”

Zelensky responded by claiming that Trump is “living in a disinformation space” created by Moscow.

In tune with Zelensky,Kallas declared that “it’s clear that the Russian narrative is very strongly represented” in Trump’s statement. (That’s her best diplomacy)

She stressed thatfor any peace deal to be effective, it would need to involve the Europeans and the Ukrainians. (No one said they wouldn’t)

She was referring to recent high-level US-Russian talks in Saudi Arabia, which frustrated the EU. Member states criticized Washington for sidelining Brussels and Kiev during the negotiations.

“You can discuss whatever you want with Putin, but if it comes to Ukraine and Europe, then Ukraine and Europe also have to agree to this deal,” Kallas told journalists.

Last week, reports suggested that theEU is preparing a military aid package worth at least $6.2 billion for Ukraine. The package is expected to include 1.5 million artillery shells and air defense systems – one of the bloc’s largest military aid commitments since the escalation of the conflict in 2022.

Russia considers Zelensky “illegitimate” and recognizes only the Ukrainian parliament and its speaker. Russian officials have warned that any treaties he signs could be challenged and questioned.

I find it interesting the US rarely responds to their accusations.

Polish president’s ‘10-minute’ meeting with Trump ignites controversy

Andrzej Duda’s chief of staff has insisted there was no shame in waiting for “our greatest ally”

The office of Polish President Andrzej Duda has rebuffed criticism of his meeting with US President Donald Trump, which detractors argue was far shorter than anticipated and followed an excessively long wait.

Polish media reported Duda had expected at least an hour with Trump, having flown across the Atlantic to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland on Saturday.

Bloomberg reportedthe officials met for ten minutes while Reuters noted that a “short” meeting had taken place, after Trump arrived late. (How much was Bloomberg paid for this propaganda?)

On Monday, Marcin Mastalerek, Duda’s chief of staff who accompanied him to the US, dismissed the criticism, saying the assessments of “so-called Twitter experts” lacked a basis in reality.

”The meeting didn’t conclude in 10 minutes, nor was it intended to last an hour,”he told Radio ZET, attributing the negative commentary to “political jealousy” from those who resent the strong rapport between Duda and Trump.

He furtherridiculed the idea that waiting for “the president of the greatest power, our greatest ally” could be seen as humiliating.

Duda was the first European leader to meet Trump in personafter the latter’s inauguration for a second term last month. Speaking to reporters during his visit, Duda expressed confidence that “there is no concern about a decrease in US presence in Poland” and urged Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to pursue “calm and constructive cooperation” with Trump.

Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters in the conflict with Russia, a policy that the pro-EU liberal government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk has continued following a 2023 election victory over Duda’s allies from the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party.

In stark contrast, Trump’s stance on Ukraine diverges significantly from that of his predecessor, Joe Biden. Trump advocates for a swift resolution to hostilities and has openly criticized Zelensky’s policies, including his refusal to hold elections. Washington is also seeking to recoup taxpayer dollars spent on supporting Ukraine by negotiating a minerals deal, which the Zelensky government has yet to finalize.

Amid growing tensions, Trump has labeled Zelensky a “dictator without elections,” warning that his opportunity to benefit from US goodwill is rapidly diminishing. In response, Zelensky has accused Trump of living within a Russian “disinformation bubble.”

(Obviously the EU and US press are trying to ostracize anyone that meets with Trump. It won’t work, but they are so jealous. Kek. These pranks will not make Trump talk to them more. They are acting like jealous teenagers.)

1/2Good Analysis, funny picture

Trump’s realpolitik: Breaking old alliances, forging new deals

Why the US is turning its back on Western Europe and looking to Russia

By Vitaly Ryumshin, political analyst at Gazeta.ru1/2

A year ago, if someone had told me that the United States would pressure Ukraine into paying reparations, demand that Russia no longer be called an ‘aggressor’, float the idea of annexing Canada, and chide Western Europe for its lack of democracy –I would have laughed it off.Yet here we are, in February 2025, and what once seemed absurd has become reality.

It is no exaggeration to say that we are witnessing perhaps the most dramatic shift in US foreign policy since the early 20th century. Over a century ago, America entered World War I, laying the foundations for global dominance and the liberal world order. Today, in a dramatic reversal, Washington appears to be dismantling its own creation. The idealistic liberalism that shaped US foreign policy for decades is being replaced by cold, pragmatic realpolitik.

Trump’s America: A radical turn

This abrupt course-correction did not happen overnight. US President Donald Trump has been talking about fundamentally altering America’s role in the world since at least 2015. However, his first term saw more rhetoric than action, leading many to dismiss his words as bluster. Even when his second term began with an aggressive shake-up of the global order, it was unclear whether he was serious or merely testing the waters.

The Munich Security Conference this year provided clarity. After Vice President J.D. Vance’s historic speech, it became evident that the old United States – the one that upheld Western unity and global democracy – was gone. What remains is anew America, one that prioritizes self-interest over ideological commitments.

Prioritizing China, abandoning Europe

For Trump, China is America’s primary adversary. He views Beijing as an existential threat, accusing it of siphoning wealth from the US through trade imbalances and expanding its influence into the Western Hemisphere, long considered America’s untouchable ‘backyard’. To counter this, Washington must refocus its efforts – but excessive entanglements in regions of little value to the US have hampered this pivot.

Trump’s first order of business is reducing Washington’s commitments to Europe. This aligns with his longstanding ‘America First’ doctrine: the US should protect only its own interests and not bankroll European security out of some outdated sense of transatlantic solidarity. The ideological divide between Trump and Western European elites has grown too wide, and he has not forgotten how they mocked him and supported his domestic opponents.

With that in mind,Trump is determined to make Europe shoulder its own security costs. He expects NATO members to contribute their fair share and is not shy about pushing for leadership changes that align more closely with his views. By doing so, he hopes to free the US from what he sees as an unnecessary burden, allowing Washington to concentrate on the real geopolitical contest – its rivalry with China.

2/2

A strategic rapprochement with Russia

In contrast to his approach toward Europe, Trump is actively pursuing closer ties with Russia. Again, this is not surprising. The US-Russia-China triangle has long been a delicate balancing act for American strategists. During the Cold War, Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon successfully peeled China away from the Soviet Union, isolating Moscow. Trump appears intent on repeating that maneuver – this time by courting Russia to contain China.

As part of this strategy, Trump is prepared to make significant concessions to Moscow. He sees Ukraine as outside the zone of vital US interests and is willing to sacrifice Kiev’s ambitions in exchange for Russian cooperation. There are even discussions about reintegrating Russia into Western institutions such as the G7. For Trump, these are minor concessions in the grand geopolitical game, but they could yield substantial gains.

Energy and economic interests

Another major driver of Trump’s outreach to Russia is energy. The US president believes that high energy prices are stifling the American economy. So far, efforts to persuade American oil producers and Saudi Arabia to increase production have fallen flat. A rapprochement with Moscow could provide an alternative solution: boosting Russian oil and gas exports to the US while offering American companies lucrative contracts for Arctic resource extraction.

For Russia, a new era of political and economic cooperation with the United States could be beneficial– but only if Washington abandons its past ideological constraints. With Trump at the helm, there is aunique opportunityfor dialogue based on pragmatic interests rather than liberal moralizing and hegemonic ambitions.

The question of longevity

The biggest unknown in this equation is how long Trump’s new approach will last. His presidency has upended decades of American foreign policy, but the US political system remains unpredictable. There is no guarantee that his successor – whether in 2029 or sooner – will continue down the same path. If Trump is ousted or constrained by internal opposition, the US could revert to its previous stance, undoing his realignment efforts.

Nevertheless,as long as Trump holds power, Washington will likely continue its recalibration. The US is shifting its priorities, reducing its commitments in Europe, and seeking strategic gains in its rivalry with China. For Russia, this represents both a challenge and an opportunity. The key question now is whether Moscow can leverage this moment to secure lasting benefits from its engagement with the new America.

For now, the world watchesas Trump reshapes the geopolitical landscape – perhaps more dramatically than any US president in modern history.
