A high ranking member of the CCP had a side gig of hoarding aluminum ingots that were rehypothecated at around a dozen banks. Aluminum, at the time, was an "encouraged" trade by the state, a k a heavily subsidized. As the rehypothecation bubble collapsed, he stole all his consigned ingots from their "bonded" delivery pier at one of the big 4 ports. The theft actually forced the port to be closed for several months, as they tried to inventory what ackshewally was being stored there.
The missing aluminum ingots? They showed up in the Mexican desert, ripe and ready for NAFTA transshipment into the LME delivery system in the US. Damn near killed the badly run Alcoa.
So no, not a pawnshop, but there are unquestionably some very connected, very entitled thieves there.
There were some stores that were rehypothecated some 14 times. No loan recovery for that kind of theft. Throw EverGrande on top and you get a real banking crisis, which is exactly what's habbening there.
