Supreme Court throws out Oklahoma inmate Richard Glossip's murder conviction and death sentence

The Supreme Court has thrown out the murder conviction and death penalty for Richard Glossip, an Oklahoma man who has steadfastly maintained his innocence and averted multiple attempts by the state to execute him

That was just the latest reprieve for a death row inmate who has eaten three “last meals” and been married twice while awaiting execution. Oklahoma has set execution dates nine times for Glossip.

#ColoradoRiver states stare down the ‘looming specter’ of a Supreme Court battle

Water managers from the seven states that use the Colorado River are caught in a standoff about who exactly should use less water, and they appear to have made little progress ahead of a 2026 deadline for new rules about how to share.

In January, Arizona’s government made headlines when a proposed state budget included up to $3 million for litigation related to the Colorado River.

“It’s really a backstop in case we don’t come to a collaborative agreement,” said Tom Buschatzke, Arizona’s top water negotiator.

“Under the new Supreme Court precedent, if we get into a lawsuit, they have a right to intervene,” Hart Zobell said. “Once they’re in, we’re not just having Upper and Lower Basin discussing. We’ve got a third party that we’ve got to settle with.”

The Colorado River basin is also home to 30 federally recognized Native American tribes. Although Indigenous people in the Southwest have been using Colorado River water longer than any other group in the region, they have largely been excluded from discussions about how the river is shared.

Critically injured South African soldiers are evacuated from Congo amid rebel offensive

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — A group of critically injured South African peacekeepers who were hurt in fighting in eastern Congo a month ago have been evacuated by the United Nations, the South African armed forces said Tuesday.

South African National Defense Force spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini told The Associated Press that the soldiers had returned to South Africa, but did not say how many had been repatriated. He said they had been receiving treatment in a hospital in the rebel-controlled city of Goma in eastern Congo.

The city of 2 million people was seized by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in January as part of a continuing offensive in Congo’s mineral-rich east that has alarmed some in the international community. The U.N. had pushed for the Goma airport to be operational again.

Fourteen South African peacekeepers were killed in January in the fighting between Congolese government forces and the M23 rebels.

The South African defense minister said at the time that they had been caught in crossfire as the rebels advanced towards Goma. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa later said they were killed in rebel attacks on peacekeepers. Those 14 bodies had already been repatriated.

An M23 spokesperson said Monday that up to 300 soldiers of different nationalities left eastern Congo this week, among them the injured South African troops.

South Africa’s leading role in a southern African peacekeeping force in Congo has come under scrutiny at home, with political parties and the national armed forces union questioning if the soldiers had been properly equipped and prepared.

21 federal technology staffers resign rather than help Musk and DOGE slash size of government

WASHINGTON – More than 20 civil service employees resigned Tuesday from billionaire Trump adviser Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, saying they were refusing to use their technical expertise to "dismantle critical public services."

"We swore to serve the American people and uphold our oath to the Constitution across presidential administrations," the 21 staffers wrote in a joint resignation letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press. "However, it has become clear that we can no longer honor those commitments."

The employees also warned that many of those enlisted by Musk to help him slash the size of the federal government under President Donald Trump's administration were political ideologues who did not have the necessary skills or experience for the task ahead of them.

"Several of these interviewers refused to identify themselves, asked questions about political loyalty, attempted to pit colleagues against each other, and demonstrated limited technical ability," the staffers wrote in their letter. "This process created significant security risks."
