Rare earth refers to a group of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, known as the lanthanides, plus scandium and yttrium. Despite their name, most of these elements arenโ€™t actually rare in terms of abundance in the Earthโ€™s crustโ€”theyโ€™re just tricky to find in concentrated, economically viable deposits. They include elements like neodymium, dysprosium, and cerium, which have unique magnetic, luminescent, and catalytic properties.

These elements are critical in modern techโ€”think smartphones, electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and even military hardware like missile guidance systems. The catch is that extracting and refining them is messy, costly, and often environmentally harsh, involving complex chemical processes. China dominates the global supply, producing about 60-70% of rare earths as of recent years, which makes them a geopolitical hot potato. Other countries, like Australia and the U.S., have deposits too, but scaling up production is slow.
