A Shelby County lunchroom worker was fired Monday for accepting donations to help students pay for school meals.

The Shelby County School Board voted Feb. 24 to terminate Avette Dunn, who has worked at Shelby Elementary School for eight years. According to news reports, Dunn had been on “detached duty” since October for accepting donations intended to fund meals for students who could not afford them.

“I made a mistake and I think I should be able to go back to my job,” Dunn told officials at a school board meeting. “In my opinion I think I should’ve been suspended for two weeks, but I’ve been off since October, but I don’t think I should get terminated just for not telling.”

According to a statement from the Alabama Education Association, Dunn accepted donations and placed them into an account designated for school meals. (((((((She did not misuse donations.))))))

At Monday’s hearing, Shelby County officials said they decided to terminate Dunn because she was dishonest about the donations when questioned.

The district has not responded to a request for comment from AL.com as of Tuesday afternoon.

According to a statement issued by the AEA, Superintendent Lewis Brooks alleged that Dunn had violated protocol by not informing the school’s principal about the donations “during an impromptu questioning in a crowded lunchroom.”

Dunn said she was honoring the donor’s request for confidentiality and was unaware of any written policies or training regarding the acceptance of donations for the student meal account.

“Every dollar was accounted for and used solely to ensure no child at her school went hungry,” the statement read. “…Ms. Dunn’s actions reflect her compassion and dedication to the well-being of the students she serves, and her termination would set a troubling precedent.”

About 45% of students in Shelby County Schools are eligible for free and reduced-priced meals if they sign up for meal benefits. The district, however, is not currently eligible to participate in the federal Community Eligibility Provision program, which provides free meals to all children in a school system regardless of family income.

“Obviously we’re disappointed in the outcome, and they will review to see if we will go the next step, which is a type of an appeal through the Students First Act,” AEA UniServ Director Tracy LeSieur told AL.com.
