Does This 1979 Sci-Fi Film Accurately Predict AI?

This was made for a global trade fair in Japan in 1979. It scored a huge success at the fair lines. We did outside to see it. It seems so futuristic, so AI.

In 1979, the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) was still in its early stages, and the way people thought about it was largely shaped by the advancements of the time, which were still relatively rudimentary compared to what we have today. The general perception of AI during this period was a blend of optimism, caution, and fascination with the idea of machines that could think or mimic human intelligence.

AI research was primarily focused on symbolic AI, also known as "good old-fashioned AI" (GOFAI), which involved rule-based systems that could simulate reasoning and problem-solving. These systems were limited, usually requiring a lot of explicit human input and defined rules, and didn't have the kind of adaptive learning abilities we associate with modern AI.

Popular culture and science fiction (e.g., 2001: A Space Odyssey and Isaac Asimov's stories) heavily influenced how AI was imagined. There was fascination with the idea of sentient machines, but there was also a deep-seated fear of AI going beyond human control. People were often concerned about the potential dangers of intelligent machines becoming too powerful or even hostile.

Many saw AI as a tool to augment human capabilities, especially in specific tasks such as medical diagnostics, military applications, or industrial automation. It was envisioned more as a way to automate routine tasks or assist humans rather than as an entity with true consciousness or emotions.

The term "AI winter" refers to periods when interest and funding in AI research waned due to a lack of breakthroughs and overly ambitious expectations. By the late 1970s, after decades of hype, the limitations of early AI systems were becoming more evident, leading to a bit of a decline in the optimism surrounding the field.

In the late 1950s, John McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence" and helped organize the Dartmouth Conference, which set the stage for AI as a field. By 1979, though, AI was still evolving, and there was still significant interest in understanding how to model human cognition with computers, but much of the high-level AI research was in its infancy.

The most accurate part is where everyone stays in rooms all by themselves only interacting with technology.

And the old man, surrounded only by memories of himself and his computer. God help us if this becomes AI. AI his only friend as a child, AI his only confidant at work, AI his only memory in death.

Buffum went on to study history at Stanford University, and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.[4] At a school dance, she met fellow student Norman Chandler, the eldest son of the family that had published the Los Angeles Times since 1883. The couple married in 1922, and had two children, Camilla and Otis, both born in 1927. The Chandlers went on to have eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.[4] In 1945, her husband became publisher of the Times, a position he held until he was succeeded by their son, Otis, in 1960. He died in 1973, and Chandler never remarried.[5] The family lived in Los Tiempos (the Times), a grand house on Lorraine Blvd. in Windsor Square, Los Angeles, where she lived until her death in 1997.[6][7]

I hope hackman was a good guy. I like him.

Maybe him, wife and dog were removed from movie as whistle blowers before he really dies, old age confessions, or part of movie last. 10 years, white hat?

The worst part of the movie, we simply do not know what is truly habbening or who is a good or bad guy.

I hope there are volumes of books to tell us all how it went down once it is all over.
