The couple were clearly animal lovers and they previously had three dogs as in 1999 the actor adopted the third dog while he was filming The Replacements in Baltimore alongside Keanu Reeves.
While the pair were filming, two stray dogs walked onto the set. Gene initially took them to an animal shelter, which named the dogs Gene and Keanu after the starring pair. Later, Betsy and Gene made the decision toadopt the dog named Gene.
