Deming kids forced to live in ‘underground caves’ alongside feces, per court docs
“The property appeared to look like a city trash landfill.” That is how a New Mexico State Police Officer described the home of eight children and their two parents, who are accused of physically and sexually abusing their kids.
According to court documents, the eight children, whose ages range from 16 years old to 6 months, and their parents, Melvin Cordell, 50, and Valerie Cordell, 41, lived in “underground caves” made of mud on a 35-acre property on Opatah Drive NW.
Investigators who searched the property described the caves as being “4 to 6 feet deep,” and one of them had tunnels connected to it. Mattresses and buckets of feces were found in the caves and in other areas of the property. Also on the property, officers found mountains of trash, rotting food, animal skeletons, broken appliances, broken campers, vehicles, and clothes lining the driveway.
While serving the search warrant, Melvin Cordell told officers that his oldest son slept in a white van with no tires. Cordell also showed officers two trailers that were being used as storage, one of which had roof damage, and Cordell said the family hadn’t lived in over 10 years.
New Mexico State Police began investigating the Cordells in October 2024 after receiving a report from Roswell Police. Their 16-year-old daughter reported the abuse while at New Mexico National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Academy and RPD was alerted.
The 16-year-old told investigators that she and her siblings not only lived in caves but were forced by their parents to participate in sexual acts with each other in front of adults.
The teen said she had been pregnant twice, once at the age of 13 and second at her current age, and that she was a She told investigators that she had “unwanted sex” with her father and two other adult relatives who live in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to court documents.
She also told investigators that her parents starved the kids as punishment, recalling instances where they were not fed after they called 911 and CYFD visited the property.
Officials believe the abuse took place between 2014 and 2024.
Valerie and Melvin Cordell were arrested on Feb. 21, 2025, and booked into the Luna County Detention Center.
Valerie Cordell is charged with 16 counts of child abuse and one count of conspiracy to commit child abuse.
Melvin Cordell is charged with 16 counts of child abuse, 2 counts of criminal sexual penetration, one count of criminal sexual contact of a minor, and one count of conspiracy to commit child abuse.
State prosecution is pushing to keep both suspects behind bars pending trial.
All eight children remain in New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD) custody.

Farmington woman accused of leaving teen in chicken coop fatally shot
A woman accused of child abuse in Farmington is now dead. The Farmington Police Department said they are investigating the death of 36-year-old Patricia Madrid. Details are limited but they said there was a shooting just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Medical personnel took Madrid to San Juan Regional Medical Center where she died from her injuries.
Madrid and her husband, 59-year-old Jammy Jackson were arrested earlier last week after police said they left a 15-year-old in a chicken coop for long periods of time and exposed to extreme weather conditions. Police said the teen was only allowed to use the bathroom twice a day and was fed packaged ramen noodles while her siblings ate whatever they wanted. The pair were charged with 14 counts of child abuse.
Police released video of a person of interest in the shooting. They believe the men left on a bike headed east on Navajo St. toward Lincoln Ave. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 505-599-1068.

Farmington couple charged with child abuse
Tuesday night, a Farmington couple is behind bars after locking their child in a chicken coop for months. Starting in September, detectives received a complaint from Child Protective Services regarding concerns for a child’s welfare. The 15-year-old told CPS she had been locked in a chicken coop for extended periods of time and exposed to extreme weather conditions.
According to court documents, 36-year-old Patricia Madrid and 59-year-old Jammy Jackson would only allow her to use the bathroom twice a day and was fed package ramen noodles while her siblings ate whatever they wanted. Detectives gathered evidence confirming those allegations and removed the child from the house.
Madrid and Jackson were arrested and charged with 14 felony counts of child abuse. They are being held at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center.

Farmington Police arrested two people accused of child abuse after a months-long investigation.
Police arrested 36-year-old Patricia Madrid and 59-year-old Jammy Jackson. They each face seven felony child abuse charges and seven felony charges of conspiracy to commit that abuse.
According to a criminal complaint, one of the children alleged they were forced to stay standing inside of a chicken coop from when they woke up to when they went to bed – around 17 hours. The child alleged this happened every day from April to September, except for three days for a family trip, and that they were only allowed to use the bathroom twice a day.
The child also alleged they had been forced to be out in the cold without proper clothing. Jackson and Madrid are accused of malnourishing the child and abusing them, even pointing a gun at the child and hitting them.
Investigators questioned Jackson and Madrid. They said the child had outbursts requiring discipline but denied the allegations lodged against them.
Investigators say a search warrant on Jackson’s phone allegedly revealed a log of extensive text messages. The messages allegedly showed him and Madrid discussing what was alleged against them.
Police drew up charges against them. They arrested them Tuesday.
This isn’t the first time Madrid has faced charges for child abuse. In 2020, prosecutors charged her with child abuse. However, the case was dropped.

Priest who prayed for Trump at Butler rally begs prez to help return kidnapped Ukrainian children
“And please ask yourself — if Russia’s only goal was to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, why kidnap so many children? Why castrate Ukrainian POWs? I assure you, Mr. President, that Russia’s designs are far more sinister than preventing Ukraine from joining a geopolitical alliance: it is the destruction of an entire people for daring to look at the West.”

‘Scheduling issues’ scupper Rubio-Kallas meeting in Washington
“High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas is visiting Washington D.C. on 26 and 27 February. She will meet with U.S. senators and congressmen to discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine and the transatlantic relationship,” the spokesperson said.
Kallas had also been expected to meet Rubio during her time in Washington to discuss efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent push for negotiations with Moscow. The two top diplomats last met during the Munich Security Conference earlier in February. However, the Washington meeting will now not take place.
It “seems that the Trump administration doesn’t miss a chance to show that for them the EU is not a player,” an EU diplomat commented on the canceled meeting.

Gene Hackman’s wife found mummified and bloated by workers who hadn’t seen couple for two weeks
Gene Hackman’s wife was found mummified and bloated when the two were discovered dead with their dog in their multimillion-dollar New Mexico home by maintenance workers who hadn’t seen the couple in about two weeks, police wrote in an affidavit.
Authorities said the deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation” after finding the door to the couple’s home was “unsecured and opened” and an open orange prescription pill bottle and pills scattered around the room where Hackman’s wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, and one of their German shepherd dogs were discovered.
Deputies noted that it appeared Arakawa had “obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mummification in both hands and feet” when she was found on the floor of a bathroom near the home’s entry, according to the report.
The door into the couple’s $3.3 million Santa Fe, New Mexico, home, which sits on six acres and is over 8,000 square feet, was left ajar — but there was no sign of forced entry or theft, according to the report.
Authorities also noted in the report that a black space heater was found near Arakawa’s head. A responding officer said “he suspected the heater could have fallen in the event the female abruptly fell to the ground,” the affidavit said.
The couple’s deceased dog was located about 10 to 15 feet away from Arakawa inside the bathroom’s closet, deputies wrote in the report.
Meanwhile, Hackman’s body was located in what deputies believe was the mudroom near a pair of sunglasses. Officers wrote in the report that it appeared he had “suddenly fallen.”
Hackman’s body had “obvious signs of death, similar and consistent with the female decedent,” police wrote in the report.
Deputies also noted two other “healthy” dogs located on the property, one inside the residence and one outside, according to the report.
Fire department officials who responded reported finding no signs of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning, according to the report.
The cause of death for Hackman and Arakawa will be determined by a medical examiner, officials said.
The New Mexico Gas Co. is working with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation, spokesperson Tim Korte told the Associated Press.
