Soviet Chess Grandmaster Boris Spassky Dies at 88

February 27, 2025

Soviet chess grandmaster Boris Spassky, best known for his Cold War-era defeat to American Bobby Fischer, has died at 88, the Russian Chess Federation announced late Thursday.

"The tenth world champion Boris Spassky has died at 88," the federation said in a statement, calling his passing a "great loss for the country." It did not specify the date or cause of death.

Spassky is best remembered for his 1972 world championship match against Fischer, a contest that became a symbol of U.S.-Soviet rivalry during the Cold War.

The match, held in Reykjavik, Iceland, has since been chronicled in numerous books, documentaries and films. It also inspired Walter Tevis' novel "The Queen's Gambit," which was adapted into a hit Netflix series in 2020.

Spassky won the world championship title in 1969 but faced mounting pressure when he defended it against Fischer. The Soviet Union had dominated chess for decades, and Spassky was expected to uphold its supremacy.

He initially took the lead, but Fischer staged a remarkable comeback, ultimately claiming victory and breaking the Soviet stranglehold on the game.

Although the defeat was seen as a major blow to Moscow, Spassky later admitted that losing the title was a relief, freeing him from the "colossal responsibility" of representing Soviet chess.

Born in 1937 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Spassky displayed exceptional talent from a young age. He became the junior world champion and, at 18, the youngest grandmaster in history at the time.

California city councilwoman cries as FBI arrests husband at Walmart — he's an illegal alien with DUI on long rap sheet

February 26, 2025

A California city councilwoman is claiming that she is being politically targeted after her husband was detained by FBI agents at a Walmart parking lot on an immigration detainer.

Yadira Perez is on the city council for Coachella, but she says that she will resign from her office if her husband is deported, which would toss the council into political chaos.

Perez recorded video as her husband was led away by what she said were FBI agents, but she initially tried to stay anonymous.

“My family was just separated. They have taken my kids' father. Those are the desperate cries of help,” said Perez on the video.

She later admitted to KESQ-TV that the man had been charged with drug possession in 1994 before they met and had been deported in 1995.

He returned to the U.S. illegally and married Perez. She says he has been charged with misdemeanor assault and two charges of driving under the influence since then.

A statement from ICE said that 51-year-old Isidro Jimenez had been captured in a "targeted enforcement action" and said he is a Mexican national.

Contrary to what Perez said, ICE stated that Jimenez had been convicted of one charge of DUI in 2007, a charge of inflicting corporal injury to a spouse in 1998, and a charge of assault with a deadly weapon from 2023.

"The separation of a family is not right, it's inhuman!" she added tearfully in an interview with KMIR-TV.

She added that Jimenez had been her biggest supporter on the campaign trail.

“He motivated me to fight for transparency, unity, and safety for our city," she added.

Jimenez was released on bond on Tuesday, and he is scheduled for a hearing in April.

“People are playing dirty,” Perez added. “But I will keep fighting for my community until the end.”

President Donald Trump promised mass deportations were to be a focus of his second term in office, and so far ICE has ramped deportation effort despite protests from illegal alien advocates.

Update: Yadira Perez No Longer Employed at RSO

Feb 26, 2025

Lost in Hype, Sensationalism of Arrest of Local Man is Accountability for Yadira Perez

COACHELLA — Yadira Perez is no longer a sworn deputy with the Riverside County Sheriff’s office, Sheriff Chadd Bianco confirmed for Uken Report on Wednesday evening.

“We were made aware of the arrest and the post on social media,” Bianco told Uken Report. “We are currently working with federal law enforcement officials to determine the facts concerning the arrest by immigration officials. The involved deputy is no longer employed by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.”

On Thursday, Bianco told Uken Report, “We have relinquished the investigation to the DA’s office public corruption team and the federal government. We are conducting an internal affairs investigation, but any potential criminal investigation will be handled by those agencies.”

The story has now made national headlines.

The future of her tenure on the Coachella City Council remains uncertain. It’s an interesting turn of events for a woman who just last month was part of the majority on City Council that voted to 3-2 to place City Manager Gabriel Martin on administrative leave immediately. There was no public explanation.

During the November election, Perez was the darling of the Democrats, She was endorsed by Rep. Raul Ruiz, Denise Delgado, Frank Figeruoa, Democrats of the Desert and Desert Stonewall Democrats. The Desert Sun also endorsed her.

As a deputy of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Perez took an oath of office to uphold the law.

In all of the breathless coverage of her husband’s arrest this week, no one mentioned the fact Yadira Perez was a sworn deputy for the Riverside County Sheriff’s office.

Perez’s husband is a previously deported Mexican undocumented immigrant with a lengthy rap sheet of several felony convictions, including possession of a controlled substance (meth) for sale, inflicting corporal injury to a spouse, DUI, and assault with a deadly weapon, according to ICE.

Isidro Jimenez-Ibanez is also now looking at prosecution for felony re-entry, as federal authorities are now charging him with violation of 8 USC 1326, illegal alien found in the US after deportation, which was the reason for his FBI/ICE arrest in the Coachella parking lot. The FBI had a criminal warrant signed by a federal magistrate when they arrested him. It is a felony to re-enter the US illegally after deportation, punishable by up to 2 years in prison on the first offense. A judge has since released him on bond.
