EU state seeks to ban tours to Russia and Belarus

Latvian lawmakers have cited potential risk to citizens’ safety and being recruited for espionage

Latvian lawmakers have advanced legislation that would ban organized trips to Russia and Belarus, citing potential risk to the safety, health and even life of its citizens, as well as the potential recruitment of spies. (Do they have proof this ever happened? No, they don’t need it, “the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax” still survives and is useful by the racists in the EU)

The country’s parliament on Thursday approved in the first reading the amendments to the Tourism Law that seek to prohibit all Latvian-registered travel agencies from offering and providing tourism services in the two countries, according to an official statement.

Despite repeated calls from the State Security Service and the Foreign Ministry not to travel to Russia,almost 2,000 Latvian residents visited the countryevery month last year, noted the document.

When in Russia or Belarus,Latvians “may be recruited for espionage, exposed to intelligence and risks of provocation,” according to the deputies who initiated the amendments. The ban would be implemented as part of the current EU sanctions against Moscow and Minsk, the statement added.

Critics of the legislationhave argued that it addresses a non-existent issue.

According to official figures, 90% of all people crossing the Latvia-Belarus border are individual travelers.Tourist trips to Russia are no longer organized, and only four agencies offer services in Belarus.

Right-wing MP Ainars Slesers denounced thebill as “nonsense,” arguing that people could not be banned from foreign travel, as cited by media outlet TV3. MP Aleksejs Roslikovs pointed out that trips to “dangerous” countries such as Israel and Ukraine have not been banned.

The conservative National Alliance party has suggested that it would be more appropriate to ban passenger transportation to Russia and Belarus altogether, a measure that is under discussion by a relevant commission.

To come into force, the amendments must pass two more readings in the parliament.

Latvia, along with neighboring Baltic states Estonia and Lithuania, has been one of the most ardent critics of Russia. Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict three years ago,Riga introduced a number of draconian policies aimed against ethnic Russians, who make up roughly 23% of the country’s population.

Russia comments on latest talks with US

Diplomatic normalization is a two-way street, Moscow has emphasized following a meeting with a delegation from Washington

Russia and the US have identified steps they both should take to restore normal operations of their diplomatic missions, the Foreign Ministry in Moscow has said, following negotiations in Türkiye.

Russian and US delegations met in Istanbul on Thursday,as the two nations seek to heal a diplomatic riftthat deepened under the previous administration of President Joe Biden.

The discussions centered primarily on reinstating regular operations at the US Embassy in Moscow and the Russian Embassy in Washington, with thetwo sides identifying “concrete initial steps,”as previously noted by the US State Department. In a statement on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasizedthat normalization must be a two-way process.

Both nations have imposed various restrictions on each other in recent years, including limiting the number of diplomatic personnel, constraining banking access, and seizing diplomatic properties. Moscow argues that its sanctions are a direct response to actions taken by Washington.

The ministry stressed the importance of achieving “practical results for improving bilateral relations in the interests of our peoples.” As part of this effort,Russia proposed restoring direct air traffic between the two nations.

In 2022, the US suspended flights and closed its airspace to Russian airlines, acting alongside other Western nations in response to the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. Travelers have since relied on airlines from neutral countries, routing through locations such as Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates.

US President Donald Trump has shiftedaway from many Biden-era policies, includingattempts to “isolate” Russia. His administration is seeking a swift end to the Ukraine conflict.

Trump has labeledKiev’s aspirations for NATO membership unrealistic. Moscow views the military bloc’s expansion in Europe and its promises to eventually admit Ukraine as key factors fueling the ongoing conflict.

Trump names conditions for resuming talks with Zelensky

The US president insists he will only speak with a like-minded leader who “wants to end the bloodshed”

President Donald Trump has outlined his expectations for any future engagements with Vladimir Zelensky, emphasizing thatfurther negotiations depend on a clear commitment to peace.​

Speaking to reporters after a tense meeting with Zelensky at the White House on Friday, Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of “overplaying his hand” and failing to demonstrate a genuine desire to end the conflict with Russia.​

“We’re looking for peace,” Trump stated. “We’re not looking for somebody that’s going to sign up a strong power and then not make peace because they feel emboldened…He’s looking to go on and fight, fight, fight. We’re looking to end the deaths.”​

Trump reiterated that aceasefire should be the immediate priority, suggesting thatZelensky was unwilling to consider one.He also noted that, unlike Zelensky, Russian President Vladimir Putin seems willing to make peace, and insisted that US policy should focus on de-escalation rather than prolonging hostilities.​

When asked whether he had explicitly told Zelensky to leave the White House, Trump declined to answer directly. “I think you know the answer to that,” he said, adding that Zelensky “wants to come back right now, but I can’t do that.”

Summarizing his position, Trump made clear that the US would not continue to back Ukraine unless Zelensky took steps toward peace.​

EU’s Kallas calls for ‘new leader of free world’

The bloc’s top diplomat has voiced support for Ukraine after Vladimir Zelensky’s scandalous White House visit

The European Union’s top diplomat,Kaja Kallas, has suggested that the United States can no longer act as the “leader of the free world,” after President Donald Trump publicly scolded Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky for his disrespect and ingratitude toward the American people. (No one elected Trump as that, but if you want a stone idol, go for it and do your stupid emotional thing.)

The meeting between Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance on Friday descended into an openly hostile exchange. Zelensky was asked to leave the White House early without signing an agreement that would have granted the US rights to Ukraine’s natural resources, or holding a joint press conference.

In response to the scandal, Kallas, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy and former Estonian prime minister, took to X to express her support for Zelensky, writing, “We stand by Ukraine.”

“We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the agressor [sic],” Kallas wrote. “Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.” (Yes after all the stupid mistakes you have done for 50-75 years, please do it.)

Kallas previously accused Trump of adopting “Russian narratives and talking points” about the Ukraine conflict, and expressed concern over what she described as Washington’s shift away from its longtime European allies.

She also pushed back against criticisms of democracy in the EU made by Vance at the Munich Security Conference – remarks that Trump praised as “brilliant.”

“I refuse to accept that criticism, because it’s just simply not true,” Kallas said.

In recent weeks, Trump has made several critical statements about Ukraine’s leadership, describing Zelensky as a “dictator without elections” and suggesting that Kiev bears responsibility for allowing the hostilities to escalate in 2022.

“I have empowered you to be a tough guy, and I do not think you would be a tough guy without the US,” Trump told Zelensky on Friday. “But you are not acting at all thankful, and that is not a nice thing… What you are doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country.”

Zelensky responds to resignation calls from pro-Kiev hawk

Sen. Lindsey Graham calls for the Ukrainian leader to be replaced with someone Washington can deal with.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, who has refused to hold new elections since his presidential term expired last year, dismissed calls to step down in an interview with Fox News following his contentious White House visit on Friday.​

US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Zelensky at the White House earlier in the day escalated into a heated argument, with Trump telling Zelensky he was “in no position to dictate” and accusing him of failing to show gratitude to the American people for the aid Washington had provided to Kiev.​

The spectacle led many critics to question whether Zelensky could ever regain the reputation of a reliable partner.Even the notoriously pro-Kiev US Senator Lindsey Graham, who has visited Ukraine to meet with Zelensky on multiple occasions over the years, noted that the Ukrainian leader had crossed a line with his behavior.​

“What I saw in the Oval Office was disrespectful, and I don’t know if we can ever do business with Zelensky again,” Graham told reporters. “He either needs to resign and send somebody over that we can do business with, or he needs to change.”​ (oh his graft in Ukraine was not disrespectful?)

Fox News host Bret Baier pressed Zelensky on whether he would consider following the senator’s suggestion and resigning.​

“I was always ready… I’m not sure that is a good idea for such proposes [sic],” he said, adding, “Americans vote for American president… Only Ukrainians vote for their president.”

Zelensky’s five-year presidential term concluded in May 2024, but he has repeatedly refused to hold new elections, citing ongoing martial law.​

Trump has previously labeled Zelensky a “dictator without elections” with a “4% approval rating.”​

After Friday’s disastrous White House meeting, Trump told the press that he believed Zelensky was more focused on tying the US down to long-term military support of Ukraine than on achieving a peace deal.​
