From Zucks Dragonfly pic to NASA's Blue Ghost "Firefly…"

US firm Firefly scores its first moon landing with Blue Ghost spacecraft

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Firefly Aerospace succeeded in its first attempt to land on the moon with its uncrewed Blue Ghost spacecraft on Sunday, kicking off a two-week research mission as a handful of private firms compete to reach the frontlines of a global moon race.

The size of a compact car, the four-legged Blue Ghost carried 10 scientific payloads as it touched down at around 3:35am ET (0835 GMT) near an ancient volcanic vent on Mare Crisium, a large basin in the northeast corner of the moon's Earth-facing side.

Suspense and silence fell over a mission control room full of company staff inside Firefly's Austin, Texas headquarters as Blue Ghost descended toward the moon's surface at a gentle two miles per hour. Will Coogan, Firefly's Blue Ghost Chief Engineer, confirmed on a mission control live feed the spacecraft had entered lunar gravity.

We're on the moon," Coogan declared moments later, prompting cheers in mission control.

Firefly becomes the second private firm to score a moon landing, though it declared itself the first company to make a "fully successful" soft landing. Houston-based Intuitive Machines' Odysseus lander made a lopsided touchdown last year, landing mostly intact but dooming many of its onboard instruments.

Five nations have made successful soft landings in the past - the then-Soviet Union, the U.S., China, India and, last year, Japan. The U.S. and China are both rushing to put their astronauts on the moon later this decade, each courting allies and giving their private sectors a key role in spacecraft development.

Blue Ghost flew on a winding path over three times around Earth, totaling roughly 2.8 million miles, to get to the moon some 238,000 miles (383,000 km) from Earth, reaching the surface a month and a half after launching atop a SpaceX rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The moonshot by Firefly, an upstart primarily building rockets, is one of three lunar missions actively in progress. Japan's ispace launched its second lander on the same rocket as Firefly's in January, before Intuitive Machines embarked on its second lunar mission on Wednesday.

Blue Ghost's three solar panels will power the lander's research instruments for a 14-day mission on the moon, before the frigid lunar night brings temperatures as low as minus 280 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 173 degrees Celsius).

CROWDED MOON RACE

Missions like Firefly's Blue Ghost represent low-budget precursor missions that will enable research into the lunar environment before the U.S. sends its astronauts there in a series of crewed missions beginning in 2027.

China, meanwhile, is making swift progress in its own moon efforts, with its robotic Chang'e lunar program and plans to put Chinese astronauts on the moon's surface by 2030. Also eyeing the moon are U.S.-aligned Japan and India, which made its first soft lunar landing in 2023.

Firefly has a $101 million contract for the Blue Ghost mission from NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which hopes to stimulate a private lunar market and make such treks lower-cost and routine.

Other countries eyeing the moon and deep space exploration have followed NASA's model for commercial spaceflight, with India investing in its private space sector while Europe funds multiple rocket launch startups.

"We're hoping to get lower-cost missions at a faster pace, and we just have proof it works," said NASA's CLPS chief Chris Culbert said. "We landed on the moon, almost perfectly."

The successful touchdown comes at a time of unease and uncertainty across the U.S. space industry, after President Donald Trump's looming shift of the U.S. space program's focus to Mars - a destination favored by SpaceX CEO and influential Trump ally Elon Musk.

Acting NASA administrator Janet Petro said at Firefly's landing event that the moon remains part of America's goal to "dominate" space.

On Blue Ghost, two onboard instruments will study the lunar soil and its subsurface temperatures in experiments by Honeybee Robotics, a firm owned by Blue Origin, which is developing its own lunar lander to send humans to the moon for NASA's Artemis program later this decade.

NASA's Langley Research Center has a stereo camera on board to analyze the lunar dirt plumes kicked up by Blue Ghost's landing engine, gathering data to help researchers predict the dusty surface material's dispersal during heavier moon missions in the future.

Angie Stone, Neo-Soul Singer, Dead at 63

Angie Stone, neo-soul singer and member of the pioneering all-female hip-hop group the Sequence, has died at the age of 63.

The singer’s rep Deborah R. Champagne told TMZ that Stone died in a car accident early Saturday morning following a concert the previous night in Montgomery, Alabama; Stone was scheduled to perform in Baltimore Saturday night, and died en route in the crash on Interstate 65 in Montgomery County, Alabama. Stone’s daughter Diamond also confirmed her mother’s death on social media.

“Angie Stone’s voice and spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched,” Stone’s publicist said in a statement (via CNN). “Details regarding memorial services will be announced by the family in due course.”

The Columbia, South Carolina-born Stone (then known as Angie B) co-founded the Sequence in 1979 along with Cheryl “the Pearl” Cook and Gwendolyn “Blondy” Chisolm. After becoming the first female hip-hop act to sign with Sugar Hill Records, the trio released their first single “Funk You Up,” a track that was later interpolated by Dr. Dre (on “Keep Their Heads Ringin’”) and influenced (to the point of lawsuit) Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.”

“Bruno Mars took the lyrics, the cadence and the melodies,” Stone told Rolling Stone in 2017, “and then they went and reached over to ‘Apache’ and got ‘Jump on it/Jump on it.’ I’m like, OK, now y’all done did too much. We’re broke over here, OK? We need some money. We need some of that, because we created that!”

McCain Institute Leads Expert Delegation to Ukraine to Support Sovereignty and Democracy

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 7, 2024) – The McCain Institute at Arizona State University (ASU) led a high-level expert delegation to Kyiv and Lviv, Ukraine, from October 26 to November 1, to demonstrate solidarity with the country’s struggle for its sovereignty and freedom and to assess democratic reforms. The delegation included McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas and Senior Director of Global Democracy Programs Laura Thornton along with the U.S. Institute of Peace’s Catherine Dale, Cornell University’s Thomas Garrett, New America’s Candace Rondeaux, and National Endowment for Democracy’s Kenneth Wollack.

“Senator McCain was dedicated to the people of Ukraine and their determination to live in a free and democratic society. Having visited Ukraine three times in the last year, I am proud to carry the torch and stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. This latest trip underscored the importance of Ukraine joining NATO and the EU in order to defeat Vladimir Putin and the spread of authoritarianism around the globe. This should be the urgent priority of the outgoing Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration,” said Dr. Farkas.

“I was impressed by the efforts of Ukrainians to continue to prioritize democratic reforms, even in times of war. There was a commendable understanding that security and good governance go hand-in-hand and more participatory decision-making will support, not thwart, the victory effort,” said Thornton.

The McCain Institute and delegation members issued the following readout from the trip. The views expressed in this statement are not necessarily those of the delegation members’ affiliated organizations.

During meetings with leaders from Ukrainian civil society, media, government, and political parties, delegates heard about the complications of democratic processes during war and suggestions for how the U.S. can focus its assistance effectively to help Ukraine realize its goal of EU and NATO membership, essential for a just and lasting peace. Although the delegation members included thought leaders and practitioners from different backgrounds and perspectives, they came to similar conclusions.

The delegation was inspired by the depth of Ukrainian resolve and resilience in the face of this unjust war. They were also struck by the toll the war continues to take and the sense of urgency Ukrainians have to ensure Ukraine wins, an intention shared by everyone with whom the mission met. The delegation was reminded that the fight to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine and ensure that it remains protected is not simply a matter of geography but also a guarantee that millions of Ukrainians will not live under a dictatorial foreign power.

Without the continued support of the United States and Europe, Ukraine will not meet this goal. Ukrainians described troubling Russian gains on the battlefield, indiscriminate night air raids against the civilian population of Kyiv, and deliberate crippling of energy infrastructure. One interlocutor pointed out that while Russia has “friends” like North Korea prepared to put boots on the ground, Ukrainians feel they lack similar support. To secure a just and lasting peace, NATO membership is a crucial step.

Security and governance should not be sequential, but simultaneous. The foundations of future governance in Ukraine are being laid now. The stronger — and more participatory and resilient — those foundations, the better the prospects for a future lasting peace. As one Ukrainian leader explained, democracy in Ukraine has deep, unmovable roots, but the branches and trunk are under stress.

More inclusive decision-making can promote shared responsibility, which, in turn, can maintain national unity, particularly during times of crisis. Pluralism and diversity of opinion also mitigate risk for the government through more analysis and information sharing. President Zelensky’s recent consultation with civil society is an important step in this direction, one that would be helpful to repeat regularly.

The delegation also learned that in addition to Ukraine’s Victory Plan targeted at external partners and actions for support, there have been discussions of a domestic National Victory Plan, which includes democratic reform. The delegation applauds this proposal – the adoption of an inclusive national agenda focused on effective governance is necessary and urgent, as the external threats posed to national unity must be met by all citizens, not just the government. As Ukrainians explained to delegates, the Revolution of Dignity had democracy at its core.

2024 Trafficking in Persons Report: Ukraine

partial

Law enforcement capacity remained affected by other critical wartime policing needs in government-controlled areas or lack of access to occupied territory. An international organization reported Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine significantly and adversely affected the court system, delaying judicial proceedings. Law enforcement only operated in areas that remained under government control, but not in territories occupied by Russia’s forces. Law enforcement investigated 142 new trafficking cases – 44 for sex trafficking, 87 for labor trafficking, including 32 for forced criminality, and 11 for unspecified forms of trafficking – in 2023, compared with 70 investigations in 2022 and 222 in 2021. In addition, the government continued investigating 115 cases. The government prosecuted 126 suspected traffickers – 52 for sex trafficking, 74 for labor trafficking, including 11 for forced criminality – in 2023, an increase compared with 70 prosecutions in 2022 and 101 in 2021. The government investigated and prosecuted additional cases as “adoption for commercial purposes” and “use in the pornography business” which are considered human trafficking under Ukrainian law, Article 149. The government convicted 35 traffickers in 2023, compared with 18 in 2022 and 24 in 2021. Of the 35 convicted traffickers sentenced in 2023, only eight (23 percent) received prison sentences (17 percent in 2022). Twenty traffickers received suspended sentences, three received fines, and four convicted traffickers did not yet receive a sentence. Observers reported many judges underestimated the severity of trafficking crimes and continued to hold entrenched stereotypes about what constituted trafficking in persons, while others engaged in corrupt practices. These lenient sentences weakened deterrence, did not adequately reflect the nature of the crime, created safety concerns, and undercut broader efforts to fight trafficking.
