Liner giant’s vessel was carrying civilian cargo

A Russian ballistic missile attack on the port of Odesa damaged two civilian vessels, including a boxship in the fleet of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company.
Ukrainian vice prime minister Oleksii Kuleba identified the two ships as the 1,118-teu MSC Levante F (built 2006) and the 28,500-dwt Super Sarkas (built 2002) — a bulker managed by Turkey-based Thor Shipping and Trading.
Kuleba did not elaborate on the extent of the damages, simply stating that the vessels involved were carrying “completely civilian cargo”.
The Super Sarkas had more than 21,000 tons of corn and soyabeans for export on board.
MSC managers did not immediately respond to a request for comment and Istanbul-based Thor Shipping was not contactable.
The ballistic missile strike was aimed at the port of Odesa, a frequent target in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Two port employees were injured in the attack, said Oleg Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional State Administration.
According to Kuleba, 29 vessels have been damaged in Ukraine since Russia invaded the country three years ago.
The war, however, has not ground Ukraine’s exports to a halt.
First under a UN-protected scheme and then under Ukraine’s own authority, more than 4,000 ships carrying 106m tons of cargo, including 70m tons of grain, have called at the country during the war, sustaining its external trade.
Ukraine has been hitting Russian ports as well.
TradeWinds reported on Friday that a Panama-flagged vessel suffered damages in a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian Black Sea port of Tuapse.
On Saturday, Russia also accused Ukraine of trying to take out a compressor station feeding natural gas into the Turkstream pipeline in Russia’s Krasnodar region.
All three Ukrainian drones were shot down and the station is “operating normally,” the Russian defence ministry said.
