We need a federal law outlawing lower level hate crime laws.
Everything justifiably a crime under such laws is ALREADY a crime.
EG burning a cross is free speech.
But if you burn it on someone's else's front lawn, or are doing it for terroristic purposes, those are ALREADY crimes. And terrorism crimes are serious.
Likewise, your mental state in perpetrating a crime is ALREADY considered in sentencing (if there is EVIDENCE of that mental state).
By contrast, "hate crime laws" can turn normal unfortunate crimes like road rage incidents into much more serious crimes. Road rage is just road rage, even if you hurl a racial insult.
Obviously the people who push hate crime laws are up to no good and the goal is to create social division, but we still need action to stop it.
