Trump Drafting Order to Abolish Education Department
https://www.newsmax.com/us/education-department-abolished/2025/03/06/id/1201637/
Thursday, 06 March 2025 06:44 AM EST
President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order aimed at his long-held goal of abolishing the U.S. Department of Education, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The order might come as soon as Thursday, the newspaper said late Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter whom it did not name. The White House and the department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Trump repeatedly has called for eliminating the department, calling it a "big con job." He proposed shuttering it in his first term as president, but Congress did not act.
His fellow Republicans have long sought to chip away at its funding and influence, and his education secretary, Linda McMahon, who was confirmed by the Senate on Monday, has defended Trump's plan to abolish the agency.
The department's defenders say it is crucial to keeping public education standards high and accuse Republicans of trying to push for-profit education. An immediate closure could disrupt tens of billions of dollars in aid to K-12 schools and tuition assistance for college students.
Trump said last month he wanted the department to be closed immediately but acknowledged he would need buy-ins from Congress, which determines its funding, and teachers' unions.
McMahon told senators that unwinding the department would require congressional action and repeatedly promised the federal school funding appropriated by Congress to assist low-income school districts and students would continue.
Trump and his billionaire adviser Elon Musk have attempted to dismantle government programs and institutions such as the U.S. Agency for International Development without congressional approval, but abolishing the Department of Education would be his first shutdown of a cabinet-level agency.
The department oversees some 100,000 public and 34,000 private schools in the United States, although more than 85% of public school funding comes from state and local governments.
Instead, it provides federal grants for needy schools and programs, including money to pay teachers of children with special needs, fund arts programs and replace outdated infrastructure.
It also oversees the $1.6 trillion in student loans held by tens of millions of Americans who cannot afford to pay for university outright.
Under Trump's Democrat predecessor, Joe Biden, Republicans particularly criticized the department over student loan forgiveness and policies related to diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

Walmart Asks China Suppliers to Absorb Trump Tariffs

Walmart has asked some Chinese suppliers for major price cuts, with the U.S. retail giant's efforts to shift the burden of President Donald Trump's tariffs facing strong push back from firms in the Asian nation, Bloomberg News reported Thursday.
Certain suppliers, including makers of kitchenware and clothing, have been asked to lower their prices by as much as 10% per round of tariffs, likely shouldering the full cost of Trump's duties, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the report, few have accepted. Suppliers' margins are already razor thin due to Walmart procuring goods cheaply in order to maintain its competitive advantage.
The retailer initially requested price reductions from manufacturers when Trump's first round of tariffs on China took effect in early February, with the request for additional cuts coming later the same month when he threatened to double duties, the report said.
Walmart did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment.
Last month, the U.S. retailer forecast sales and profit for the current year below expectations, citing the need for caution in navigating an uncertain geopolitical landscape cast by high interest rates and Trump's tariffs.
WSJ: China Worried About Trump's Trade Plan

Despite bravado talk publicly in response to Donald Trump's tariff increase, China reportedly is worried the president's return to the White House could hurt them greatly.
Trump on Tuesday imposed 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, and also doubled the tariff to 20% on goods from China. The president said his motivation is to stop fentanyl from invading the U.S.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman late Tuesday in Beijing warned China is ready for any "type of war" with the U.S.
Then on Thursday, the Chinese commerce minister said China will not yield to bullying and its economy can weather higher tariffs and other challenges.
However, Chinese President Xi Jinping is concerned Beijing could find itself cut off by trade restrictions and sanctions, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. Such a scenario would mean fewer outlets for its goods and limited access to vital technologies.
In fact, Xi worries about China becoming involved in another Cold War-like scenario in which his country battles the U.S. for economic, technological, and overall geopolitical supremacy.
"Now China is in danger of becoming the target of a similar rivalry," a source told the Journal. "Xi believes that must be avoided."
The report also said Xi, from the first trade war with Trump, learned his country has more to lose from responding to the tariff hike with proportional increases because the U.S. buys substantially more from China than the other way around.
Despite Trump seemingly agitating other world leaders with some of his moves so far, China's position is not a strong one.
Xi's domestic economy is in crisis, and the Chinese president wants to rely on the global trade system โ one that Trump is determined to reform.
"They are kind of desperate," said Michael Pillsbury, a China expert at the Heritage Foundation, the Journal reported. "Their economy is in trouble. Now that Trump put the tariffs on, they know this campaign has failed."
Also, Trump's desire to end the wars in Ukraine and Gaza partly derive from his desire to better focus on China, sources told the Journal. His speaking diplomatically about Russian President Vladimir Putin is a way to affect the relationship between Moscow and Beijing.
Trump also wants the U.S. to reclaim control of the Panama Canal, which China has utilized to its benefit.
"All the stuff he's doing is so that we can put more resources" to counter China, an administration official told the Journal.

Trump Plans Executive Order to Bolster US Shipbuilding

U.S. President Donald Trump is drafting an executive order aimed at resuscitating domestic shipbuilding and reducing China's grip on the global ocean shipping industry that handles more than 80% of global trade.
A draft fact sheet seen by Reuters on Wednesday includes an 18-point plan that includes funding the effort with fees from imports arriving on Chinese-made ships. It would also establish a Maritime Security Trust Fund as a dedicated funding source and create shipbuilding incentives that include tax credits, grants and loans.
"The White House is standing up an office at the National Security Council to lead a whole-of-government effort to strengthen the maritime industrial base," the document said.
U.S. lawmakers for years have warned about China's growing dominance on the seas and diminishing U.S. naval readiness. The pending executive order appears to be influenced by existing proposals, including legislation with bipartisan backing.
Mike Waltz, Trump's national security adviser and a former House Republican from Florida, last year introduced a bill with Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly from Arizona that aimed to reinvigorate commercial and military shipbuilding in the United States.
The U.S. Trade Representative's office last month proposed charging up to $1.5 million for Chinese-built vessels entering U.S. ports as part of its investigation into China's growing domination of the global shipbuilding, maritime and logistics sectors.
Other measures in the draft document would direct Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency to review government procurement processes, including at the U.S. Navy; increase wages for nuclear shipyard workers; and develop cargo preference and favorable tax policies for U.S.-flagged vs. non U.S.-flagged vessels.
