Deadly police operation in Schönebeck: An Afghan threatens a German and the police with a knife. Special forces of the State Criminal Police Office have to resort to firearms.

SCHÖNEBECK. In Schönebeck in Saxony-Anhalt, special forces from the State Criminal Police Office shot dead a 26-year-old Afghan after he had previously threatened a German of the same age and the police with a knife. According to current information, the incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. in the stairwell of an apartment building. The exact background to the altercation and a possible relationship between those involved are still unclear.

Witnesses alerted the police, whereupon special units from the State Criminal Police Office were deployed. When the officers arrived, the Afghan also threatened the emergency services. According to the police report , shots were fired at the suspect, who later died in hospital. The investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) has accused critics of the federal reception program for Afghans in Germany. There are "some political actors" who are trying to "discredit" German efforts, Baerbock said at a meeting with Afghan women at the Foreign Office in Berlin .

Baerbock defended the program and pointed out that it would take in "vulnerable people" who were being persecuted by the Taliban. "That's why I am convinced that we are doing the right thing." Since the Taliban took power, Germany has allowed around 36,000 Afghans into the country through various programs.
