China Swoops In to Court Africa After Trump’s Lesotho Joke

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters in Beijing on Friday that his government will step up investment, financial assistance, and diplomatic outreach to Africa, seemingly seeking to exploit an opening created by reduced foreign aid under President Donald Trump, and a joke Trump told this week that has rubbed some Africans the wrong way.

“The stability and development of Africa are crucial to the shared destiny of humanity. The world should listen to Africa’s voice and pay attention to its concerns,” Wang said at a press conference during China’s annual “Two Sessions” political event, a dual meeting of the National People’s Congress and the People’s Political Consultative Conference.

“Africa is undergoing a new awakening, and all nations should support Africa in forging a new path of self-reliance and self-strengthening development,” he said.

To this end, Wang said China would help African nations “speed up the process of industrialization and modernization in agriculture” and develop leading-edge technologies such as “digitization, green sectors, and artificial intelligence.”

“Africa is the land of hope for the 21st Century,” Wang said. “Without the modernization of Africa, there can be no modernization of the world.”

Lauren Johnston, an associate professor of China studies at the University of Sydney, wrote at The Conversation on Thursday that China may hope African suppliers can make up for U.S. agricultural exports halted during the new trade war with America. China was able to make similar use of African business connections to blunt some of the pain from Trump’s tariffs during his first term.

Johnston noted that China began making high-profile efforts to foster increased African trade within a month of Trump returning to the White House. African countries are “responding to the new opportunities from China,” although most of those responses have been symbolic so far, such as opening trade offices in China and attending technology expos.

Semafor spoke to a bevy of China-Africa analysts on Monday who said that for all of China’s talk about supporting Africa, Beijing is very unlikely to replace the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) programs shuttered by Trump.

“The idea that the dismantling of USAID opens the door wider for China in Africa is a misdirection. They don’t give aid in that way, so they can’t “replace” USAID,” said Development Reimagined consulting firm CEO Hannah Ryder.

Another analyst, Ronak Gopaldas of Signal Risk, said that “Trump’s America First approach will create some geopolitical opportunities for China to step into a leadership void in Africa,” but agreed that China does not provide huge amounts of foreign aid like the U.S. usually does.

In fact, as Semafor pointed out, China’s preference for big loans and profit-making investments is fundamentally “transactional” in nature, which is not very different from what Trump’s America First strategy envisions.

“If the Trump administration shifts toward the dealmaking approach that China has prioritized in the Global South, it could potentially increase U.S. effectiveness in its competition with China in Africa,” the Brookings Institution likewise recommended.

The feelings of various African leaders toward Trump could influence the continental chess match between the U.S. and China. During Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday, in the course of listing some of the wasteful and absurd government programs he is shutting down, Trump made a joke about Lesotho being a country “which nobody has ever heard of.”

The BBC described Lesotho’s government as being “shocked” that Trump would be so dismissive of their country after years of “warm and cordial” relations with the United States.

“To my surprise, ‘the country that nobody has heard of’ is the country where the U.S. has a permanent mission,” Lesotho’s Foreign Affairs Minister Lejone Mpotjoane responded sarcastically.

“Lesotho is a member of the U.N. and of a number of other international bodies. And the US has an embassy here, and a number of US organisations we’ve accommodated here in Maseru,” said Mpotjoane. Maseru is the capital of Lesotho.

Mpotjoane said his government is “not taking this matter lightly,” and would make an official protest to Washington.

“Lesotho is such a significant and unique country in the whole world. I would be happy to invite the president, as well as the rest of the world, to come to Lesotho,” he said during an interview with Reuters.

Lesotho officials were notably less interested in criticizing Trump for shutting down USAID funding for LGBTQ organizations in Lesotho, with Mpotjoane shrugging it off as the U.S. government’s “prerogative to cut aid if they want to.”

Walmart Tells Chinese Suppliers to Absorb Cost of Trump’s Tariffs

Walmart, one of the nation’s biggest retailers, is telling its China-based suppliers to absorb the cost of President Donald Trump’s increased tariffs on Chinese-made products.

Sources told Bloomberg News that Walmart is asking Chinese suppliers to cut their prices — some by as much as 10 percent — so that Trump’s increased tariffs on China will be absorbed by the retailers rather than American consumers.

Chinese suppliers are reportedly trying to resist any lowering of their prices while some manufacturers are having to go outside China to source their materials.

A spokesperson for Walmart told Bloomberg that the retailer is looking to keep prices as low as possible for American consumers amid the increased tariffs on China.

The request from Walmart shows, yet again, that companies will look to absorb tariff costs despite claims from the establishment media and free trade enthusiasts that tariffs will drive inflation higher and raise prices to record levels.

Breitbart Economics Editor John Carney detailed this week how analysis has long shown that companies tend to absorb tariffs instead of passing such prices along to their customers:

A study published in AER: Insights by economists Alberto Cavallo, Gita Gopinath, Brent Neiman, and Jenny Tang analyzed the effects of tariffs imposed in 2018 and found that while import prices increased almost in direct proportion to the tariffs, the impact on consumer prices was far more limited. Their research used detailed microdata from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and retail price tracking to measure how tariffs translated from import costs to store shelves. The findings showed that while U.S. importers faced higher costs, U.S. retailers absorbed much of the burden, often reducing their profit margins instead of passing higher costs to consumers. [Emphasis added]

The study found that, in many cases, retailers adjusted pricing strategies rather than immediately raising prices on tariffed goods. Using data from two large U.S. retailers, the researchers observed that even as the tariffs increased the cost of certain Chinese imports by 20 percent, retail prices on those goods only rose by about 0.7 percent on average. This suggests that retailers opted to sacrifice some of their profit margins rather than risk losing customers by passing the full costs along. [Emphasis added]

The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) has also repeatedly found that tariffs are not responsible for the nation’s inflation.

“The timing of the tariffs clearly shows no correlation with inflation, and eliminating tariffs could not plausibly restrain it,” EPI researchers write. “The bulk of the tariffs were in place before 2020, yet, inflation only began accelerating in March 2021. Clearly, inflation was driven by many sources besides tariffs.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, a staunch supporter of tariffs, said this week that he expects companies to “eat any tariffs that go on.”

“… I’m not worried about China,” Bessent told CBS’ Face the Nation. “China will pay for the tariffs because their business model is exporting their way out of this inflation.”

Chris Matthews: Trump Is Like ‘Mussolini’ Lying to His Supporters

Friday, during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” long-time MSNBC personality Chris Matthews likened President Donald Trump to 20th-century Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.

Matthews said, “He’s doing all this on television. If you have noticed, he calls the TV cameras for the cabinet meetings he’s doing. He’s redirecting his cabinet officials, redirecting Musk. I’ve watched this guy use television like nobody’s ever done. When he went up the other night on Tuesday night, talked to the American people and said, ‘We’re paying Social Security checks to people who are 160 years old.’ Anybody who reads an obit page knows that’s not true. Anybody knows we’re not spending money on 20 million people out there getting free checks. That kind of fraudulence is unbelievable. But he’s telling the MAGA people out there, They’re stealing your money. Don’t trust these people in Washington. These are bad people. They are the deep state. He did it. You know, he talked about the election being stolen. Nobody in America will tell you which states were stolen from him. All the MAGA people—get them in a corner and say tell me which states were stolen in 2020.’ They can’t tell you. He just told them that. He just said they were stolen.”

Matthews added, “With Zelensky on television, he said it was ‘great television.’ I’ll never forget that. It was great television where he beat up this guy on television. He and JD Vance — and they just did it in public. So, we all know what Donald Trump thinks of Zelensky. He’s teaching us. He’s teaching us don’t trust Social Security, so he can go after it. Don’t trust Ukraine because he’s going to go after Ukraine and diminish that country and its size and its importance. All because this is what Trump thinks and that’s what it’s about. It is Mussolini. It’s about believing the leader in what he says verbatim. And that’s what Trump does on television. And he’s using us to do it using the medium.

Watch: NYPD Detective Sparks Outrage Pole Dancing in a G-String for Racy Rap Music Video

A New York Police Department (NYPD) detective has sparked significant outrage in her community for pole dancing in a G-string for a racy rap music video.

Melissa Mercado has served in the NYPD special victims’ unit for seven years and was a respected detective in her field until she randomly appeared in a music video from World Hip Hop wearing a G-string and twerking her voluptuous buttocks while being showered in dollar bills by Hempstead rapper S-Quire.

“Wanna tell you ’bout a girl named Keisha,” the rapper says in the video for his song “Doin That.” “A– thick. Just want to smash it quick. I like the way she’s doing that, the way she’s sliding up the pole.”

“I have no words,” one disgusted detective told the New York Post.

According to the Post, records show that Mercado is “a $144,000-a-year grade 3 detective assigned to Bronx special victims.” Though she did not earn a credit in the video, NYPD sources identified the woman as Mercado. Though some detectives expressed disgust, the NYPD police union said she committed no fireable offense and would only have to file an “off-duty employment application.”

“What she’s doing really has nothing to do with her as an employee, as an NYC detective,” a police union source told the Post. “She’s not wearing NYPD paraphernalia. Nothing in the video says she’s a detective.

“If she is performing for money, if she has a side gig, the job would want to know about that,” the source added. “The member would be obligated to file an off-duty employment application. I would say nothing she does in the video is the department’s business.”

Retired NYPD Special Victims Division Chief Michael Osgood felt differently, calling her conduct “unbecoming of an officer.”

“There’s a line of thinking that what you do off duty, you do off duty,” Osgood said. “But I think this conduct is unbecoming a police officer. I find it wrong morally if you’re a special victims detective.”

China Backs Egypt Plan to Keep Trump Out of Gaza

The Chinese Foreign Ministry declared its support on Wednesday for Egypt’s attempt to galvanize the Arab world into supporting a plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, intended to prevent President Donald Trump from taking the territory over.

Much of Gaza is currently uninhabitable as a result of two decades of being under the control of the genocidal terrorist organization Hamas. Following Hamas’s brutal invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023, the country declared war on the group and attacked Gaza, seeking to destroy its terrorist infrastructure in the strip. As a result, much of Gaza requires significant reconstruction, a task finding few eager takers given that Hamas is still in control of much of the area.

President Trump shocked the world in February by announcing a plan to “take over” Gaza, help the civilians trapped their find refuge somewhere else, and rebuild the territory from the ground up.

“The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We’ll love it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous bombs and other weapons on the site,” Trump said, “and get rid of the destroyed buildings [and] create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing.”

Trump subsequently published a video on social media, apparently generated by artificial intelligence, showing a gold-plated and prosperous Gaza governed by him.

Trump’s plan would require neighboring countries, including Egypt and Jordan, to take in Palestinian refugees. Both countries have adamantly refused to open their doors to Palestinians while claiming to be vocal champions of their cause.

Egypt hosted a pan-Arab emergency summit on March 4 to discuss an alternative plan to the United States leveling and rebuilding Gaza. Cairo calculated that the plan would require $53 billion and could be done without Egypt having to take in any Palestinian refugees by forcing Palestinians into temporary housing within Gaza and rebuilding piece by piece.

The Chinese government, which has tried and failed to emerge as a relevant actor in the Middle East, endorsed Egypt’s planning on Wednesday.

“China supports the effort by Egypt and other Arab countries to promote the continuous and effective implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, advance humanitarian assistance and restore security and stability there,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters during a regular briefing. “We support a post-conflict governance plan in Gaza that is recognized by the Palestinian people and embodies the consensus of Arab countries.”

“The plan must follow the principle of ‘Palestinians governing Palestine’ and align with the two-State solution so that Palestine and Israel will live side by side peacefully and there will be lasting peace in the Middle East,” Lin concluded.

The plan proposed by Egypt this way is broken up into three phases costing $3 billion, $20 billion, and $30 billion each. Cairo has suggested the money come from the United Nations, which is primarily funded by America, and “foreign direct investment” from the “private sector.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in its supportive remarks on Wednesday, did not suggest that it would be among the financial backers for the project.

To oversee this reconstruction, Egypt has proposed replacing Hamas with a technocratic leadership committee composed of various individuals pre-approved by the pan-Arab coalition and, presumably, Hamas.

Among the plans for reconstruction of Gaza in the Egyptian deal, according to the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram, are “building smart buildings that utilize renewable energy and modern technology,” “achieving a cultural and educational renaissance that ensures sustainable development in Palestinian society,” and “resorts, parks, beaches, and recreational facilities near the Mediterranean coast.”

The plan did not explicitly address the threat of Hamas or how to address the copious amounts of weapons, explosives, and other terror supplies Hamas has hidden throughout civilian sites in Gaza, including schools and hospitals. Nonetheless, the participants in the emergency summit this week unanimously approved the plan. The approval did not commit any of the parties to funding or overseeing the implementation of the plan.

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty insisted Wednesday that the plan was possible and could be completed within five years without requiring any neighboring countries to shelter Palestinians.

Illegal Alien Gets 12 Years in Prison for Killing Florida Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hartwick

An illegal alien will spend less than 12 years in prison for killing Pinellas County, Florida, Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hartwick in September of 2022.

This week, 34-year-old illegal alien Juan Ariel Molina-Salles of Honduras was sentenced to 12 years in prison minus time served for killing Michael Hartwick in a hit-and-run crash as the deputy was working detail on the construction site where Molina-Salles was working.

Molina-Salles pleaded guilty to killing Hartwick in the hit-and-run, ensuring that he would not receive a sentence of more than 20 years in prison.

The day Hartwick was killed, Molina-Salles was operating a large frontloader. With many illegal aliens working on the construction site, Molina-Salles allegedly took off from the scene after hitting Hartwick, giving his hard hat and vest to illegal alien Elieser Aurelio Gomez-Zelaya who proceeded to hide the articles of clothing.

Molina-Salles’s arrest took nearly 10 hours following the fatal hit-and-run partly because so many illegal aliens on the construction site were uncooperative with investigators.

Hartwick, 51 years old, was the father of two adult sons and had been with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office just short of 20 years.

Molina-Salles first attempted to illegally enter the United States via the southern border in October 2021 but was quickly turned back to Mexico. Pinellas County officials said Molina-Salles has been in the area since March 2022, suggesting he reentered illegally and undetected by Border Patrol sometime after his first apprehension.
