Firing squads used blanks so that nobody knows who actually kills the criminal, thus the ghost of that criminal doesn't know who killed them and can't possibly haunt them.
The same idea as the hood over the head of an executioner beheading a criminal.
That's just it, there are no bragging rights because they don't know which one done the job.
So that keeps their consciences clean as well.
If it fails, the one that loaded the rifles knows who to blame, and bring charges against for not following orders.
