Pentagon is placing probationary employees on leave in advance of mass firings

The terminations are expected within weeks under plans to fire nearly one-tenthof DOD’s 55,000 “probies.”

MEGHANN MYERS | MARCH 7, 2025

Mass firings began at the Defense Department this week, with multiple organizations receiving direction to place targeted probationary employees on administrative leave pending official action by the department.

There are 55,000 total probationary employees at DOD, according to Pentagon data shared with lawmakers this week and provided to Defense One. An undisclosed number of them began receiving notification of their new status on Monday. They are expected to be officially terminated 14 to 21 days later, according to the information provided.

The firings are part of staff reductions initiated since January by the Department of Government Efficiency, a White House advisory board. While other agencies have seen across-the-board cuts of recent hires, the Pentagon hadn’t taken broad action until this week. DOD officials have announced plans to fire 5,400 probationary employees, then freeze hiring and prepare a 5- to 8-percent cut of all civilian workers.

“I know that the recent workforce reduction initiatives are causing stress and confusion for many of our employees,” one Navy Department manager wrote in an email to staff. “As I said during our all hands event last week, shrinking the federal workforce remains an objective of the administration, and we will likely continue to receive direction to execute that objective.”

Both the manager’s identity and that of the email recipient who shared it with Defense One are being withheld to prevent retaliation.

The manager added that most of that organization’s probationary employees met one of 29 possible exemption criteria and so will not be fired.

Probationary employees are generally people hired in the past year or two who therefore lack some civil-service protections, or people recently promoted or transferred between agencies, who retain the protections they earned in their previous jobs.

The Navy had no data to share on Thursday in terms of total probationary layoffs and exemptions granted, a service official, who was not authorized to speak on the record, told Defense One.

One Navy civilian described their experience on Wednesday.

“Commander came into my office and said he needed to speak to me,” the civilian said. “My gut feeling told me it was about the firings and what is going on. I went in and he told me that I was going to be placed on admin leave for two to three weeks and I’ll be terminated due to the budget constraints and me being a probie and whatever else is going on.”

The employee said they haven’t received anything official from the department, but did turn in their access badge.

“I am an Army vet, 100 percent disabled and wanted to give back to my country in this way because I was medically discharged and can no longer serve,” they said. “My kids were in daycare on post. I drove an hour to and from work every day since November. The job was such a joy and helped with my anxiety, my mental, my lifestyle. Then it’s gone just like that.”

Word of probationary firings came down the day of President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, via memo from the Office of Personnel Management. A month later, as word swirled around DOD that managers had been asked to compile lists of their probationary employees, Hegseth took to social media to proclaim that firings would be based on performance.

“Now common sense would tell us where we should start, right? We start with poor performers amongst our probationary employees because that is common sense and you want the best and brightest,” he said…

Exclusive: Donald Trump Jr. Considering a Run For President in 2028

Diana FalzoneMar 7th, 2025, 2:07 pm

Mediate of course

When President Donald Trump sat down for an interview with Fox News last month, anchor Bret Baier asked what should have been a softball question: “Do you view Vice President JD Vance as your successor, the Republican nominee in 2028?”

Trump’s response was glaring.

“No, but he’s very capable,” the president said matter-of-factly. “I mean, I don’t think that it, you know, I think you have a lot of very capable people. So far, I think he’s doing a fantastic job. It’s too early, we’re just starting.”

The ease with which Trump threw his vice president under the bus came as a shock to observers who expected Vance to carry on the MAGA torch when Trump leaves office in 2028.

But it came as little surprise to several in Trump’s inner circle, who spoke with Mediaite on condition of anonymity and said the remarks reflected the president’s desire to keep his dynasty alive past the expiration of his own second term in the White House.

Three high-level sources told Mediaite that Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son and an omnipresent MAGA evangelist across the internet, is seriously considering a run for president in 2028.

“Don has been the most politically involved of all the Trump kids and has always kept the lanes open for a presidential run,” one White House insider and close friend of the Trump family said. “He is a valued voice for his father, and a real possibility to be a contender in 2028.”

Trump Jr. boasts his own loyal following, a successful show on Rumble, and a strong presence on social media with more than 14.6 million followers on X. He serves as a key advisor to his father – he was credited with advocating for Trump to choose Vance as his running mate – and hit the campaign trail aggressively in the run up to the 2024 election.

“Don Jr. has long been a key voice in influencing cabinet picks, policy, and potential endorsements,” the Trump insider said. “He has also consistently been the most active on the campaign trail for the president as well as his endorsed candidates.”

Another Trump family friend concurred.

“One hundred percent he will run, but only for president not VP,” they said. “He is older and more experienced than JD. In about a year, real conversations will start about him running. At this point, it’s too soon, and he doesn’t want to start a battle with JD, especially since they are friends.”

Trump Jr. denied he is considering a run for 2028 in a statement to Mediaite:

I accurately predicted that my buddy JD would be an instant power player in national GOP politics, so your theory is thatI worked my ass off to help get him the VP nomination because I want to run for president in 2028? Are you fucking retarded?I’m actually glad you’re =•printing this bullshit though because at least now the rest of the press corps will see how shitty your “sources” are and how easily you’re played by them==. Congrats, moron.

One sign of Trump Jr.’s political ambitions is his growing involvement in the current administration’s diplomatic efforts – a considerable expansion of his prior role as a campaign surrogate for his father.

Trump pressured to make Puerto Rico independent to save America $617 billionMar 7, 2025

Donald Trump is being lobbied to make Puerto Rico an independent nation and save American taxpayers $617.8 billion, DailyMail.com has learned.

At least two congressional offices are in possession of a seven-page draft 'executive order' on how the U.S. can help the island territory transition to independence.

One individual familiar with the document's origins said at least two members of Congresshave a copy of the draft, which DailyMail.com has obtained and reviewed.

A source familiar with the document's existence disclosed that it is also in the possession of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) and potentially other Cabinet secretaries.

Staffers for the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee and a staffer for Rep. Tom Kean (R-N.J.) have already held or scheduled meetings about the draft executive order.

The committee has jurisdiction over issues relating to Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories. But committee officials did not reply to a request for comment.

The order appears to have been drawn up by a congressional office and leaders of Puerto Rico secessionist efforts, and not the White House.

But it is a clear effort to apply pressure on the White House to transition Puerto Rico out of its current status as a U.S. territory.

Trump has not indicated that he wants to rid the U.S. of the territory.

The White House declined to comment on the draft order and appears to be unaware of its origins.

According to the document, the effort seeks to establish the Caribbean island as a 'sovereign and independent' nation and in the process decouple its financial and security interests from those of the U.S.

(Why does the U.S. need it, it’s a sinkhole of unlimited money from US pouring into it?It’s a lot more than $617.9 billion; with all the Hurricane etc money is sent and then stolen over and over.Dems want to make it a state (like DC) because they are all corrupt leaders in Puerto Rico. Do the same for other territories that are not allies of America.)

Agreed 100%. I went through Federal archives a couple of years ago, on Hurricanes and money sent there for years, none of the money ever made Puerto Rico better or safer. It’s a shithole!

AOC is going to get investigated soon, with hiring illegal staffers, and probably pushing more money to shitholes, and how to hell is she worth millions of dollars. I read it was $25 million may be more.

The next EO Trump should do is ban lobbyists giving money to them and their families and insider trading. They took the cue from Pelosi and instead of stopping her they all did what she did, both sides.

These fake “lawmakers” need to be put in line with the law.

The Trump Administration’s First 100 DaysNYTs of course

• The Panama Canal: An investor group led by BlackRock will acquire two ports near the Panama Canal that are owned by CK Hutchison, a Hong Kong conglomerate, and that have been the subject of a dispute between President Trump and Panama.

• Foreign Aid to Resume: The Supreme Court rejected Trump’s emergency request to freeze nearly $2 billion in foreign aid as part of his efforts to slash government spending.

• Federal Properties: The Trump administration identified more than 440 federal properties that could be sold off. By the next morning, the entire inventory had been taken down, replaced by an agency web page that said the list of properties was “coming soon.”

• National Security: The senior Democrats on the Senate and House national security panels issued a scathing statement before the president’s speech to Congress.

Work Force Overhaul: Veterans, who make up a disproportionate share of federal employees, are feeling the brunt of the Trump administration’s rapid push to downsize the work force, generating discord in a reliable political base for Republicans.

• Preventing Civilian Harm: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is moving to terminate Pentagon offices and positions that focus on preventing and responding to civilian harm during U.S. combat operations, according to three defense officials.

• I.R.S.: The Internal Revenue Service is preparing to shed as much as 50 percent of its staff, according to four people familiar with the matter, a significant cut that could jeopardize the agency’s ability to complete its basic mission of collecting taxes.

Trump Ramps Up Attacks on Law Firms

With Order Targeting Perkins Coie==

The order against the firm, which did work for Democrats during the 2016 campaign, represents an escalation of efforts to punish groups the president sees as aiding his enemies.1/2

Mar. 6, 2025 (Americans agree with Trump Corrupt law firms are America’s enemies, anon.)

President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday seeking to severely punish the law firm Perkins Coie by stripping its lawyers of security clearances and access to government buildings and officials — a form of payback for its legal work for Democrats during the 2016 presidential campaign.

With the order, Perkins Coie becomes the second such firm to be targeted by the president. Late last month, he signed a similar memorandum attacking Covington & Burling, which has done pro bono legal work for Jack Smith, who as special counsel pursued two separate indictments of Mr. Trump.

While the Covington memorandum sought to strip clearances and contracts from that firm, thePerkins Coie order goes much further, seeking to also limit its lawyers’ access to federal buildings, officials and jobs in a way that could cast a chilling effect over the entire legal profession.

The president’s animosity toward Perkins Coie dates back eight years, to when two lawyers at the firm, Marc Elias and Michael Sussmann, played roles in what eventually became an F.B.I. investigation to determine if anyone on the 2016 Trump presidential campaign conspired with Russian agents to influence the outcome of that election. Both lawyers left that firm years ago.

The executive order denounces what it calls “dishonest and dangerous activity” at Perkins Coie, singling out its hiring of a research firm that led to the compilation of a dossier of unsubstantiated allegations against Mr. Trump related to possible ties between his campaign and Russia.

The executive order accused the firm of “undermining democratic elections, the integrity of our courts and honest law enforcement.”

The order instructs federal agencies to suspend any security clearances that Perkins Coie lawyers may have. It also orders government agencies to determine if they have any contracts with the law firm, and then cancel them.

Additionally, the order instructs the heads of all federal agencies to limit Perkins Coie lawyers’ access to federal buildings “when such access would threaten the national security of or otherwise be inconsistent with the interests of the United States.”

It also instructs federal officials to limit their interactions with employees of the firm andseeks to prevent Perkins Coie lawyers from being hired by the federal government. It is not clear what immediate effect the presidential decree will have on the firm.

The president and his supporters have railed against what theycall the “weaponization” of the legal system against him, arguing that he was unfairly targeted by prosecutors, judges and private practice lawyers for political purposes, rather than any wrongdoing on his part.

“This is an absolute honor to sign,” Mr. Trump said at the White House. “What they’ve done is just terrible. It’s weaponization, you could say weaponization against a political opponent, and it should never be allowed to happen again.”

2/2

The same executive order also accuses the firm of unfair hiring practices, and calls for a far-reaching review of top law firms to see if they promote diversity, equity or inclusion in a way that the Trump administration dislikes.

The federal review ordered by Mr. Trump will seek to determine “whether large law firms reserve certain positions, such as summer associate spots, for individuals of preferred races; promote individuals on a discriminatory basis; permit client access on a discriminatory basis; or provide access to events, trainings or travel on a discriminatory basis.”

A spokesman for Perkins Coie did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It was not immediately clear how many lawyers at the firm have security clearances.

Mr. Trump filed a lawsuit against Perkins Coie in 2022, accusing the firm, along with his former rival Hillary Clinton and others, of participating in a left-wing conspiracy to derail his presidential campaign. (It was based on RICO charges, not left wing conspricy, and it will be coming back)

That lawsuit was quickly tossed by a judge who said it lacked substance and legal support. Earlier this week, the president of the American Bar Association, William R. Bay, warned that Mr. Trump might take additional punitive measures against law firms he does not like, and said such behavior undermines the nation’s legal system. (He meant “the nations illegal system!)

KEKKITY“Lawyers must be free to represent clients and perform their ethical duty without fear of retribution,”Mr. Bay said in a written statement.

He added: “We reject the notion that the government can punish lawyers who represent certain clients or punish judges who rule certain ways. We cannot accept government actions that seek to tip the scales of justice in this manner.” Luke Broadwater contributed reporting.
